Traditional security systems are not easily scalable and can become single points of failure or performance bottlenecks when used on a large-scale distributed system such as the Internet. This problem occurs also when using a public key infrastructure (PKI) with a hierarchical thrust model. SDSI/SPKI is a PKI that adopts a more scalable trust paradigm, which is focused on the client and based on authorization chains. However, the task of locating the chain that links a client to a server is not completely addressed by SDSI/SPKI. Aiming to overcome this limitation, the paper proposes extensions to the SDSI/SPKI authorization and authentication model. The proposed approach introduces the concept of Federation Webs, which allows the client to build new authorization chains linking it to a server when a direct path does not exist. A prototype implementation of this proposal has shown promising results.

This work presents a methodology to develop autonomous agents for network management. There are two kinds of agents to develop: static or dynamic agents. The first one can be implemented;using heuristics obtained from an expert or the network administrator, through production rules or feed forward neural networks (NN). Using the network examples we can construct dynamic agents. The NN may be trained to solve a problem using some examples. Moreover, the behavior of the management must be considered, the network management may be reactive or proactive. Normally, we have the reactive behavior when the problem occurs and after we will search for a solution. We may see in diagnostic or troubleticket systems for Fault Management. On the contrary, the proactive behavior is a preventive control of the network. We divided the network management in the five functional areas proposed by OSI Model Reference. Thus, each area has a different intelligent solution.

Concepts and principles of TINA (Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture) are introduced with the objective of correcting problems of centralized service control and service data model existent in INs (intelligent networks). Now, it is becoming clear that future sophisticated services breaking away from the simple telephony call model, e.g., multimedia, multi-party conferencing, etc., will need to be rapidly and efficiently introduced, deployed, operated and managed. In this context, TINA developed a comprehensive architecture for multi-service networks that will support multimedia services. On the other hand, the provisioning of all the service management functionality for TINA services (i.e. FCAPS) is still an open research question. In this paper, we discuss accounting features and requirements, security of accounting management, and issues for their integration in a TINA-based service environment. A prototype has been implemented to validate the concepts and results are also presented. © 2001 IEEE.

Proposes a distributed computing environment, called the Virtual Cube (VC), to support arbitrarily large binary hypercube computing on a cluster of homogeneous workstations that are interconnected by an Ethernet LAN. The embedding concept between binary hypercube parallel architectures is introduced, and the concept of a cluster of computers interconnected through a computer network. In VC, a SIMD parallel language called VCPL (VC Parallel Language) is provided. The advantages of the VC system are that (a) it can be considered as a practical and economical binary hypercube machine, and (b) it brings parallel solutions on a binary hypercube directly into distributed applications. Currently, a VC prototype is implemented on NeXT workstations.

Influence of human engineering on manning levels and human performance on ships

In 1990 he joined the Human Systems Integration (HSI) Division (SEA 55W5) where he was task leader for auxiliary ships. The objectives of Human Engineering (HE) are generally viewed as increasing human performance, reducing human error, enhancing personnel and equipment safety, and reducing training and related personnel costs. There are other benefits that are thoroughly consistent with the direction of the Navy of the future, chief among these is reduction of required numbers of personnel to operate and maintain Navy ships. The Naval Research Advisory Committee (NRAC) report on Man-Machine Technology in the Navy estimated that one of the benefits from increased application of man-machine technology to Navy ship design is personnel reduction as well as improving system availability, effectiveness, and safety The objective of this paper is to discuss aspects of the human engineering design of ships and systems that affect manning requirements, and impact human-performance and safety The paper will also discuss how the application of human engineering leads to improved performance, and crew safety, and reduced workload, all of which influence manning levels. Finally, the paper presents a discussion of tools and case studies of good human engineering design practices which reduce manning.

The four dye fluorescence detection strategy is a widely used approach to automated DNA sequence analysis. An important aspect of data processing in this approach is the multicomponent analysis to deduce the concentrations of four fluorophores from fluorescence emission intensities at four different wavelengths. This requires knowledge of the correct transformation matrix M. The matrix M is a function both of the fluorophores employed and the fluorescence detection system. M is typically determined either by a calibration process with individual dyes, or by choosing four well-separated individual peaks corresponding to the four different dyes. Both are time-consuming and complicated procedures for routine use. An automatic scheme for finding M directly from raw sequence data is presented here. This facilitates data analysis and the underlying algorithm may also find utility in other multispectral applications.

When she returned to Canada she relocated to California. She spent a number of years living both in Los Angeles and coastal Northern California interspersed with several extended trips through the United States Mexico and Central America. Ms. McCulloch moved to Victoria British Columbia in 1989 and a year later registered in the cooperative education program in Electrical Engineering at the University of Victoria. She is presently in the fifth and final year of the program and has her sights set on graduate school. Besides the work described in this article she has been very much involved in the use of technology to assist in the delivery of curriculum at the senior secondary level. She lives on a country property a half-hour from the University with her husband her horse and three cats. W. Alfred Keddy:is an applications programmer/analyst for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria. He received a BEng (1988) in Electrical Engineering and an MASc (1994) from the University of Victoria. His research interests include distributed systems image processing local area networks VLSI and DSP system design for computation and communication and human–computer interface design. Maria A. Contents and implementation of a computer laboratory for undergraduate electromagnetics are described. The laboratory consists of four 3-hour sessions covering vector calculus, Maxwell's equations (integral and differential forms), wave propagation in materials, and wave behavior at planar interfaces. Each session contains theory (in the Help file), animations (where relevant) and a quiz. The program runs on IBM compatible 486-based PCs in a Windows environment and uses the Borland C ++ 4.0 compiler.

HULL FORM DESIGN STUDIES FOR MONOHULL COMBATANTS

作者： WILSON, WB performed this work as a consultant between 1988 and 1990. He is currently employed with Exxon Production Research Company in Houston Texas. He has worked as a program manager at the National Data Buoy Center for NAVSEC and MarAd as a naval architect taught naval architecture at the Marine Institute (formerly College of Fisheries) in St. John's Newfoundland and served as principal ocean engineer for Computer Sciences Corporation. Mr. Wilson is a graduate of Webb Institute and holds a master's degree from M.I.T. the latter via the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Wilber N. Landers scholarship. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Mississippi and a member of SNAME and ASNE.

In support of the power-limited design approach for monohull combatants, a series of hull form studies was undertaken with the objective of developing simplified algorithms for use in early design stage ship synthesis numerical models. Resistance, propulsion, and seakeeping performance were analyzed. Algorithms were generated for bare hull resistance, varying L/B and displacement with optimum prismatic, for the effect of bow and stern bulbs, and for the drag of appendages. Propulsion formulae were derived for twin screw conventional propulsion for large diameter, controllable-reversible pitch propellers, and counter-rotating propellers. For the specific case of the stern bulb hull, a single screw propulsive coefficient was determined. In the seakeeping area, equations were formulated to estimate secondary hull form parameters (given basic hull characteristics), for use in Bales equation for R, an established seakeeping measure of merit. Then, R was related to Operability Indices (OI) in various sea states and, thus, the overall Seakeeping Performance Index (SPI) for a specific "combat" set of motion criteria. The effects of fins and rudder roll stabilization were added. The result is an easy-to-use technique for determining seakeeping operability in early stage design. For the power-limited design approach, substantial benefits in propulsion and seakeeping can be obtained from a high L/B, optimum C(p), seakeeping hull form. Incorporation of a bow and stern bulb and single screw propulsor can further significantly improve powering with minimal impact on operability in a seaway.
