The development of programs for parallel architectures focusing to achieve high indices of performance is a hard task. The programmer must deal with two classes of problems, one related to describing the application concurrency and data dependencies, and other related to exploiting efficiently the processing resources of the architecture, in order to obtain an efficient implementation for a specific hardware configuration. Since cluster technology allows building parallel computers are highly scalable-particularly in terms of number of nodes, processors and amount of memory-programming and execution levels must be considered independently to achieve performance portability. This paper presents Anahy, an environment for exploiting High Performance computing on cluster architectures. It is highlighted the Anahy programming interface and some features of its implementation as well as a performance evaluation. © 2005 IEEE.

Participatory cities are those that allow the participation of citizens in the construction and improvement of their common daily life. In this work we present a tool for that participation, allowing the citizens to register the occurrences as well as take knowledge about the global geographic status of their city in on a variety of contexts (security, transit, etc.). However, a tool like that, fed by the people, certainly will deal with a large amount of information, distributed geographically. To accomplish that, a precise criterion for visualizing the resultant density distribution of occurrences must be used. In this paper, we also propose an automatic method for that visualization based on Voronoi Diagrams. The Voronoi polygons divide the region according to the concentration of occurrences. In this scheme, the area of each Voronoi polygon defines the density of the occurrences of the specific categories which are shown in the city map in color and transparency intensities for visualization. This can easily reveal the space distribution of important issues, in a variety of contexts such as criminality, commercial and industrial activities, drugs traffic, illumination concerns, and others. © 2013 IEEE.

The lattice cellular Potts model is widely used to represent physical and biological cellular systems. Standard implementations of this model in the literature employ inefficient Monte Carlo protocols to select elements (labels) of the lattice storing the investigated system. Recently, we proposed a new parallel algorithm, the Random Walker algorithm (RW), that can generate speedups from 3 to 10 times in simulations of this model. In this paper we present a distributed implementation of the RW algorithm exploiting parallel architectures. Our tests in a computer cluster show speedups between 5.7 and 15.6 in relation to the distributed standard algorithm. © 2006 IEEE.

The Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard introduced several novel encoding tools for intra frame prediction, increasing the encoder complexity when compared to previous standards. Among these novelties is the MIP tool, whose acceleration has not been tackled in the literature. Therefore, an efficient parallelization of MIP prediction targeting GPU platforms is now proposed. The presented technique makes use of alternative reference samples and computes the distortion in an approximate manner to expose and potentiate massive parallelism. Moreover, the adopted prediction scheduling and memory communication were tailored by considering the GPUs' architecture and memory hierarchy. When compared with a CPU execution, this work is capable to accelerate the MIP prediction up to 105 times at the cost of a negligible coding efficiency loss of 0.284% BD-BR. © 2023 European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO. In this work, a dynamic weighting-artificial neural network (DW-ANN) methodology is presented for quick and automated compact model (CM) generation. It takes advantage of both TCAD simulations for high accuracy and SPICE simulations for cost-effectiveness. This methodology is developed for gate-all-around (GAA) silicon (Si) nanosheet (NS) complementary field effect transistor (CFET), a potential candidate for future CMOS technology due to its innate properties. The critical process variation (PV) sources that severely degrade the CFET performance are estimated using DW-ANN. It reduces the computation cost and predicts the effects of PV sources with less than 1% error. Furthermore, a compact DW-ANN-based Verilog-A model has been developed that captures the dc as well as transient behavior accurately for circuit-level analysis. CFET-based circuits such as inverter, 6T-static random access memory (SRAM), and ring oscillator (RO) are characterized and implemented using DW-ANN-based CM. The overall average error of the model is reported as less than 2%. Therefore, the proposed device and circuit modeling approach provides a feasible solution for the rapid compact modeling of new emerging devices with good convergence and high accuracy. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

In a geological study, an important step is to determine the type of sedimentary rock or its grain size. Such a determination requires accurate analysis in the field or in a laboratory. As the size of the study area grows, this activity can be time consuming and error prone because the number of specialists working under rigid criteria also increases. This paper proposes a novel methodology to classify grain size using unique wavelength reflectance data and artificial neural networks. The results indicate that the proposed method can be reliably used in the field. © 2018 IEEE.

Accordingly with the World Health Organization, heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, cancer and diabetes are the most common chronic diseases and one of the leading causes of the mortality in the world. In such cases we need more than patient engagement to help to control of the disease, community and health organizations support is also desirable. These roles must support the patients' self-management activities, making them feel confident and motivated. This support can be accomplished by ubiquitous computing. The ubiquitous computing gives conditions to help chronic diseases patients in the management of their activities, offering support to them anytime, anywhere. In this context, this article presents U'Ductor, a model for supporting ubiquitous chronic care management, whose goal is to help the integration between patient and community resources. The U'Ductor gives a step forward in relation to the studied related works by integrating patients, community resources and community members. Those features were not completely explored in the studied works in the way we employ in U'Ductor. An implementation of the model was evaluated by a chronic patient, which gave a positive feedback about it. © 2012 IEEE.

New information and communication technologies enable a better management of the available resources in a smart city. Leaders need tools to analyze data for better decisions, anticipate problems and resolve them proactively. In this context, this article proposes a simulation tool to analyze the interaction of typical cities occurrences like criminal and police. The information of both occurrences, including their densities, are inserted and visualized on a city map. Each record is marked on the GPS point where it happened. From these inputs data, the interactions are modeled by Voronoi Diagrams. The occurrences change their position according to the size area of the opposite event. In this way, crimes runway from police and police catch crimes occurrences. As results, we show that a large increase of police actions will not influence quantitatively in the reduction of criminal occurrences out of a critical zone. © 2014 IEEE.

In the context of 5G communication, technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, and supercomputers have been further developed, and artificial intelligence technology has also become one of the hot topics at present. In recent years, the image recognition technology of artificial intelligence has been pursued by most academic enthusiasts and has been rapidly developed. With the development of computer vision, a series of target detection algorithms have emerged in recent years. This paper classifies traffic signs based on the target detection algorithm of YOLOv5 and make use of the advantages of the accuracy and real-time performance of the YOLO algorithm. To restore the real traffic scene, different shooting angles and different shooting locations are prepared as data sets. Finally, to realize the detection and recognition of traffic signs and optimize the algorithm to improve the recognition rate. © 2023 IEEE.

Data generated across time may not be easily comparable in its original form thus potentially leading to results that may be perceived as unfair to some. We investigate quality assessment of scholarly researchers from their curricula vitae (CVs) for processes such as hiring, promotion, and grant funding. In previous work, we demonstrated that case-based reasoning (CBR) offers advantages as a transparent methodology to assess researcher quality. Its benefits include consistency, transparency, ability to adapt to specific purposes, and ability to provide explanation. The problem we now face is how to preprocess the data from the CVs to compare researchers whose scholarly production is achieved under different conditions, different points in time, and span different career trajectory lengths. We propose strategies to deal with these aspects of time during preprocessing of the data for case representation. We use 1,000 CVs from the Brazilian Lattes database to illustrate.
