A contemporaneous data center (DC) hosts multiple competitive network data flows from different applications, sharing the intermediate switches capacities. In this context, congestion control and avoidance on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) are critical tasks to ensure the quality of service for hosted applications. Specifically, Software Defined Networking (SDN) created an opportunity to avoid congestion once the centralized controller can gather ongoing and historical information from all network switches and flows. However, the data gathered is enormous, and fast-computing algorithms are crucial for decision-making. In this sense, this work proposes Reinforcement Learning- and SDN-aided Congestion Avoidance Tool (RSCAT), which uses data classification to determine if the network is congested and actor-critic reinforcement learning to find better TCP parameters. Our experimental analysis shows RSCAT could decrease the Flow Completion Time (FCT) of DCTCP and CUBIC variants in several cases without requiring any software update on DC end-points.

The use of private or consortium blockchains in organizations’ applications is growing. A relevant aspect of blockchains is the choice of consensus mechanism. This decision delimits which blockchain solutions are suitable for the private scenario. Once the consensus mechanism is chosen, more than one blockchain may be enabled. However, this decision making is not trivial and requires detailed experimental indicators about algorithms and blockchains performance. In this context, we provide a comprehensive performance analysis of the Raft consensus mechanism based on its implementation in Hyperledger Fabric and Ethereum blockchain solutions. We performed our experiments on an OpenStack private cloud using each blockchain developer’s default settings for virtual machines. Our findings show how the implementation of each solution can impact the application’s performance under certain conditions.

Car spare parts are parts of a car that consist of components that form a certain unity and function, there are some parts that are damaged more often and therefore must be replaced more often. In this research, to predict the availability of spare parts using the times series moving average prediction method with random forest. The dataset used in this research is 19,068 consisting of location, transaction number, transaction date, part number, quantity and odo-km. Distribution of spare parts classified based on recapitulation of spare part distribution is RAE=54.5541% and RSE=63.8888%, distribution of spare parts based on location is RAE=55.5541% and RSE=65.2118%, maintenance based on ODO-KM is RAE=33.0949% and RSE=41.2241 % and distribution quantity RAE=33.749% and RSE=36.2317%. The results of spare part distribution analysis using the Confusion Matrix with probability accuracy are TP Rate=0.903, FP Rate=0.067, Precision=0.911, Recall=0.903, F-Measure=0.893, MCC=0.857, ROC Area=0.983 and PRC Area=0.948. In this research, the author addresses the prevalent issues faced by users of cloud services, especially those using Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technology, such as connection losses, security concerns, and poor video quality. The study does not delve into the complex problems at the data center level but instead proposes a novel Design Science Research approach. This new method, tested with five clients in varied locations, utilizes port forwarding to establish a direct server-client connection, bypassing traditional P2P frameworks. The results show that this approach significantly improves quality over the P2P system. Feedback from clients before and after the experiment indicates a positive response to this new method. This research offers insights into overcoming P2P-related issues in cloud services and contributes to the development of cloud-based server science, presenting a cost-effective, independent alternative to data center-dependent P2P services, with plans for ongoing research in this area.

The ornamental rock industry in Brazil is distinguished by its diverse assortment of rock types, presenting a unique challenge in classification due to its inherent subjectivity and reliance on expert judgment. to address this problem, the present study introduces a publicly accessible database encompassing 12 distinct classes of ornamental rocks, including granite, marble, and quartzite. This database comprises 1,798 images sourced directly from entities within the stone sector. We employ and compare the performance of seven neural network models for ornamental rock image classification: VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, ResNet101, Xception, InceptionV3, and the Vision Transformer (ViT). Our empirical analysis reveals that the ViT model outperforms conventional architectures, achieving an accuracy rate of 98.36%.

AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) is an open-source video encoding format launched in 2018 by Alliance for Open Media. To achieve high coding efficiency, AV1 brings significant innovations in comparison to its predecessor, the VP9 format. However, this came at the cost of a higher encoding complexity due to the newly introduced tools and block partitioning structures. To allow for wide deployment of AV1 in different multimedia devices, adjusting its encoding process according to the available computational resources is strongly desirable. Thus, this work presents an adaptive complexity controller for the AV1 encoder based on multi-objective optimization. Experimental results show that the proposed controller reduces encoding complexity in a target range from 10% to 40%, with satisfactory precision varying between 0.04 and 4.10 percentage points, and a BD-Rate between 0.22% and 5.24%.

This paper presents a new teaching tool with the goal of facilitating the learning of basic programming concepts among high school students and university freshmen. The tool incorporates a user-friendly visual interface and robotics, expanding on the existing Fluxprog project. New features were implemented, such as variables, logical and mathematical operations, conditional structures, and loops, to motivate students to engage in challenges that promote logical thinking. This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a programming teaching tool using a visual language based on flowcharts, with subsequent data collection through a questionnaire and analysis of preliminary results to evaluate the user's experience while interacting with the tool.
