Opportunities and Challenges from Using Animal Videos in Reinforcement Learning for Navigation

We investigate the use of animal videos (observations) to improve Reinforcement Learning (RL) efficiency and performance in navigation tasks with sparse rewards. Motivated by theoretical considerations, we make use of weighted policy optimization for off-policy RL and describe the main challenges when learning from animal videos. We propose solutions and test our ideas on a 2D navigation task. We show how the use of animal videos improves performance over RL algorithms that do not leverage such observations.

This article proposes StrawberryTalk, an Internet of Things (IoT) platform for image-based strawberry disease detection. StrawberryTalk reuses the wall-mounted monitoring cameras without extra hardware cost. The contributions of StrawberryTalk are the utilization of IoT for automatic photo shoot and the wind detection mechanism to eliminate the obscure photos due to the wind effects. Also, the data preprocessing and the infection detection models are manipulated as IoT devices to simplify the implementation of the multicascade artificial intelligence (AI) models. We derive the relationship between the camera zoom factor and the distance between the camera and the strawberries for optimal disease detection. Accuracy of detection may be affected by obscure photos. In terms of eliminating obscure photos due to wind effect, we analytically derive the relationship between the wind alert delay and the number of obscure photos that must be retaken. For the greenhouses in the Bao Mountain, we only need to retake one photo. Based on the experiments, the mean average precision (mAP) of StrawberryTalk (to detect exact spots in a leaf) can be up to 92.37%, which is better than the previous approaches. To detect if a pot has infected leaves, the accuracy of StrawberryTalk can be up to 97.92% at the zoom factor 30×. In commercial operation, it is important to detect all infected strawberry pots. StrawberryTalk is able to detect all infected pots (i.e., recall is 100%) with a camera of zoom factor of 12× . The accuracy is 96.88%. © 2014 IEEE.

Using computational design tools to create meaningful digital representations of architectural heritage delivers both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, digital tools aid the fast and detailed three-dimensional modeling of architectural elements. On the other hand, these models do not sufficiently document the materials and techniques of making. This research proposes a workflow to use computational design tools to analyze historic Anatolian brick elements while integrating their geometry, construction, and part-whole relations in parametric modeling and robotic fabrication processes. Our approach demonstrates a correlation between the design of the surface pattern and material application in historical bricklaying. The proposed workflow can be applied to formalize implicit design knowledge, integrating it into the digital environment and numeric control production codes. This holistic approach to heritage prioritizes both the tangible aspects, such as form and material, and intangible aspects such as the knowledge base of applied techniques. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Hyperspectral images often have low spatial resolution due to the sensor sizes required to capture the required spectral response. Super-resolution (SR) techniques try to mitigate this by injecting more detail in the upscaled image, either with numerical methods or deep learning and Convolution Neural Networks. In the deep learning methods, the models learn image details by inferring a high-resolution (HR) image from a synthetic low-resolution (LR) image that simulates the natural degradation of sensors by applying resampling (to reduce the image detail) and noising (to add small errors and interference). Often disregarded in the literature, the resampling method applied to generate the synthetic image can impact greatly the deep learning model training. This work, evaluate several resampling techniques to measure this impact using the Harvard hyperspectral dataset. Results showed that the Lanczos filter was the best among eight other resampling methods. The Nemenyi and Friedman ranking statistical tests also indicated that the Cubic-Spline, Bicubic, and RMS achieved good results.

Computer games continue to present challenging experimental fields for developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) models. With Case-Based Reasoning and Clustering, this work proposes novel cases and clusters-based reuse criteria for implementing card-playing agents with diversified playing skills. Using the game of Truco, a common game in South America, we detail how game actions are reused from past cases selected as query answers for given game problems. In doing so, the majority rule, the probability-based lottery, the probability of victory, and the number of points won reuse policies are used to select a cluster of cases. Then these policies are also used to select game actions from the cases within the selected cluster. Investigating the combined exploration of reuse policies, experiments of different natures evaluate the performance of implemented Truco bots disputing matches against each other. Players in these tournaments are equipped with varied policies and use case bases constructed differently.

Equipment monitoring for failure prediction is receiving attention from different sectors of society, such as industry, healthcare, and defense. In the defense domain, assets like military vehicles generate data that one can use to identify behavior changes and anticipate possible real-time failures, avoiding unnecessary maintenance interventions. Failure anticipation is crucial, as assets operated in the military domain perform critical tasks in which unexpected equipment failures result in high material and human costs. Approaches found in the literature typically deal with failure generation, aiming at analyzing the equipment's behavior. This paper proposes a broader approach called MILPdM. This proposal is a failure prediction architecture covering the whole failure prediction and predictive maintenance procedures. We evaluate MILPdM architecture by analyzing an engine-failure scenario where we train models to predict time series by collecting vibration data that describes the degradation of the vehicle's health. Considering the implementation of an LSTM-based neural network and Random Forest, the acquired results lead to a root mean square error of 0.15015 in the best case, which allows to predict the failure status two minutes in advance with only 3 hours of data history. This result shows that MILPdM is capable of anticipating failures with high assertiveness.

Most fracture properties, such as orientation and density, are acquired by interpreting data obtained at the wellbores, while fracture properties between wells are typically derived from seismic data. However, this information is sparse or has low resolution leading to the study and analysis of outcrops. The data acquisition in outcrops is facilitated by its 3D representation in Digital Outcrop Models (DOM) obtained from LiDAR and Photogrammetry. It also allows virtual interpretation and fracture detection. In either case, the 3D fracture data need to be clustered in fracture sets to allow the statistical analysis necessary to upscale and resample the DFN. This clusterization is carried out by methods like k-means and fuzzy, however with caveats, like the prior definition of the number of clusters. In this work, we propose the use of agglomerative hierarchical clustering to cluster 3D fracture data obtained by a KD-Tree segmentation algorithm. Results showed that when compared to k-means, the proposed method presented more compact clusters and balance when considering Fisher’s statistics of dispersion.

Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a pivotal genetic marker influencing the efficacy of immunotherapy in colorectal cancer. Traditional MSI examination often requires additional genetic or immunohistochemical tests, whereas histology images, widely available in colorectal cancer diagnosis, offer a valuable alternative for MSI prediction. Although Transformer-based models have demonstrated promising outcomes in predicting MSI from histology images, they are hampered by traditional local attention mechanisms that struggle to capture long-range interdependencies and establish a comprehensive global receptive field. In this study, we introduce DiNAT-MSI, a novel framework for histology-based MSI prediction that incorporates the Dilated Neighborhood Attention Transformer (DiNAT). This model enhances global context recognition and substantially expands receptive fields, all without additional computational burden. Our results demonstrate that DiNAT-MSI achieves a superior patientwise AUROC compared to ResNet18 and Swin Transformer, along with commendable explainability. Our work not only illustrates a more accessible diagnostic tool for leveraging histological data but also underscores the potential of Transformerbased models with sophisticated attention designs in advancing precision medicine for colorectal cancer patients.

The Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard incorporates a number of new tools to significantly improve the coding efficiency over its predecessor, the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), at the cost of increased complexity. Hence, to meet real-time and energy efficiency requirements, portable devices must adopt techniques to effectively reduce the VVC complexity, including customized hardware accelerators. This work presents a low-energy hardware architecture design for the Fractional Motion Estimation (FME), which is amongst the most critical VVC and HEVC encoder steps. The proposed architecture reduces the FME complexity by operating over a subset of candidates selected to reduce the energy and area demands without compromising too much the coding efficiency. At the average BD-Rate of only 0.34% and 0.28% for the Low Delay with P slices only (LD-P) and Random Access (RA) configurations, respectively, the proposed architecture achieves a 75.5% energy consumption reduction when compared to a baseline FME architecture while occupying only 36.6 % of the area.
