Virtual reality systems have been extending their usability in many areas that could not be contemplated before. One of these fields is paleontology, which can now use virtual reality to build realistic models of real fossils with many goals, including preservation of originals, optimized visualization, or even for restoring missing parts. In this paper we present an immersive system where a entire scenario is reconstructed using digital photogrammetry and Mosis LAB application. The system has shown useful for many applications from touristic purposes and paleontological studies, since the immersive system provides an increased sense of manipulation, as well as the possibility of detailed inspection both inside and outside structures.

The efficient Kalman filter has been widely used in recent decades to obtain air navigation information in UAVs. However, for a good performance of the Kalman filter, the model that describes the system dynamics must not contain uncertainties. This paper presents the implementation of a robust Kalman filter to estimate the attitude, velocity, and position of UAVs. The robust filter considers uncertainties in the sensor models. A mathematical structure based on the solution of linear systems synthesizes the predictor-corrector robust estimation algorithm. The main contribution of this study is the proposed QR decomposition based on Givens rotation to solve the linear system. The simulated experiments used sensory data collected in Zürich-Switzerland and ground truth referencing attitude, velocity, and position. The offline simulation results express the effectiveness of the robust Kalman filter for this application, with a reduction of up to 18.9% in the estimation error, in relation to the standard Kalman filter. The proposal to use systolic arrays for numerical solutions has shown promise for implementation in parallel processing platforms, such as FPGAs.

Interactive Segmentation (IS) segments specific objects or parts in the image according to user input. Current IS pipelines fall into two categories: single-granularity out-put and multi-granularity output. The latter aims to allevi-ate the spatial ambiguity present in the former. However, the multi-granularity output pipeline suffers from limited interaction flexibility and produces redundant results. In this work, we introduce Granularity-Controllable Interactive Segmentation (GraCo), a novel approach that allows precise control of prediction granularity by introducing ad-ditional parameters to input. This enhances the customization of the interactive system and eliminates redundancy while resolving ambiguity. Nevertheless, the exorbitant cost of annotating multi-granularity masks and the lack of avail-able datasets with granularity annotations make it difficult for models to acquire the necessary guidance to control out-put granularity. To address this problem, we design an any-granularity mask generator that exploits the semantic property of the pre-trained IS model to automatically gen-erate abundant mask-granularity pairs without requiring additional manual annotation. Based on these pairs, we propose a granularity-controllable learning strategy that efficiently imparts the granularity controllability to the IS model. Extensive experiments on intricate scenarios at ob-ject and part levels demonstrate that our GraCo has signifi-cant advantages over previous methods. This highlights the potential of GraCo to be a flexible annotation tool, capable of adapting to diverse segmentation scenarios. The project page: https://***/GraCo.

Immersive learning has gained significant attention with the rising trend of spatial computing, particularly in the after-pandemic era. Numerous research has explored the potential of immersive learning in higher education, primarily on the educational sector. However, prior research has frequently focused too narrowly on the effects of technology and neglected to address the crucial element influencing successful immersive learning in higher education. This study seeks to pinpoint the crucial element contributing to the development of immersive learning experiences. The methodology uses a systematic literature review (SLR) from 2018 up to 2023 to investigate the critical factors of immersive Learning in Higher Education. From the 728 papers initially retrieved, 274 were considered potential candidates, and ultimately, 86 articles were selected based on their relevance to the research question. The results reveal that the critical factors include learning design, technology, immersion, engagement, interactivity, and usability. Academic interests will benefit from this SLR's consequences as institutions create models for designing suitable immersive learning, especially within the context of higher education.

Over the last decades, there has been growing interest in research in multiple and interdisciplinary fields of human-AI computing. In particular, approaches integrating the intersecting design with reinforcement learning (RL) have received more attention. However, the current research on RL may need to consider its enhancement from a human-inspired approach further. In the present work, we focus on enabling a meta-reinforcement learning (meta-RL) agent to achieve adaptation and generalization according to modeling Markov decision processes using Bayesian knowledge and analysis. By introducing a novel framework called human-inspired meta-RL (HMRL), we incorporate the agent performing resilient actions to leverage the dynamic dense reward based on the knowledge and prediction of a Bayesian analysis. The proposed framework can make the agent learn generalization and prevent the agent from failing catastrophically. The experimental results show that our approach helps the agent reduce computational costs with learning adaptation. Finally, we conclude and anticipate that integrating human-inspired meta-RL can enable learning more formulations relating to robustness and scalability, leading to promising directions and more complex AI goals in the future.

In an effort to continue to help provide various and thriving experiences to engineering undergraduates and help increase retention, a mid-size university uses a high impact practice of using peer teachers in the classroom. It is a standard practice to use graduate teaching assistants in most areas of higher education, especially in engineering classes, discussions, labs or just to hold office hours and grade. However, an increasing number of universities have adopted and leveraged undergraduate teaching assistants as it demonstrates to effectively improve students' grades, retention, student self-efficacy, and provide some financial relief to academic institutions [1]. The impact of using peer teachers is especially evident in the first and second years in engineering. Students who participate in the role are third year or above demonstrate expertise, leadership, and an interest in teaching as part of their development. At a mid-size minority serving institution, an undergraduate teaching assistant (termed as teaching fellow) was developed informally in 2005 in the mechanical and chemical engineering department and expanded in 2017 to the entire College of Engineering and Informational Technology. In this case study, alumni and current teaching fellows were interviewed to assess the impact of their experiences and how it influenced their educational experience in their major and current career. Several themes were discovered to include increased professional and personal skill sets, self-efficacy in engineering, motivation to participate in the program, impact on career, creation of community and improvements needed to the program. A few teaching fellows decided to continue to be a p12 teacher.

The next generation of wearable biosensors comes with the latest advancements in biosensor technology. Soft and stretchable electrode materials like hydrogels with the similar functionalities of human tissue including stretchability, self-healability, and responsiveness to different stimuli have emerged as the most versatile materials in wearable electronics. The incorporation of conductive nanofillers is found to enhance the sensitivity of the electrochemical biosensors significantly. Microfluidic technology has reduced the volume of samples and reagents required for the analysis, allowing continuous biomedical monitoring from a drop of biofluid. In this paper, the most advanced progress in electrochemical wearable platforms that can noninvasively and continuously monitor the biochemical markers in body fluids for the diagnosis and health management is reviewed. Innovation in microelectronics, modification, fabrication technologies, and detection methods are the main focus of the discussion. In particular, hydrogel-based sensors and microfluidic systems as the latest technology trends in wearable detection are discussed in detail. Integration of miniaturized electrochemical wearable biosensors with wireless technology as a great promise for real-time healthcare monitoring and point-of-care (POC) diagnostics is also summarized. Finally, we outline the most advanced wearable biosensors with optimized material and design as well as key challenges that need to be addressed to improve sensing performance (accuracy, sensitivity, selectivity, stability), portability (miniaturized size and light weight), and flexibility of the wearable biosensors. © 2024 The Authors

In the last decades, the Brazilian Cerrado biome has undergone major transformations due to the expansion of the agricultural frontier. The region called MATOPIBA acronym for states Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia can be considered very attractive for agricultural expansion. The Cerrado predominates in the MATOPIBA region (91% of the area), also having small areas of the Amazon and Caatinga biomes to the northeast and east, respectively. In this work, we will present a study to identify center pivot irrigation systems in the MATOPIBA region using remote sensing images from Landsat-8 satellite. The methodology is based on the use of robust edge detection techniques such as Canny, Circular Hough Transform (CHT) and time series extraction through the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) product MOD13Q1 which has two vegetation indices NDVI and EVI. These time series will be used to filter the detected circles, seeking to eliminate the circles that do not correspond to center pivots. Our approach detected 80% of the center pivots mapped by the Brazilian National Water Agency (ANA) used as a knowledge base. The states with better detection were Piauí and Bahia that showed the accuracy of 90% and 85% respectively, Maranhão obtained 57% and Tocantins 41%. © 2020 IEEE.
