Both the size and the resolution of images always were key topics in the graphical computing ***,they become more and more relevant in the big data *** can observe that often a huge amount of data is exchanged by medium/low bandwidth networks or yet,they need to be stored on devices with limited space of *** this context,the present paper shows the use of the Fractal method for image *** is a lossy method known by providing higher indexes of file reduction through a highly time consuming *** this way,we developed a model of parallel application for exploiting the power of multiprocessor architectures in order to get the Fractal method advantages in a feasible *** evaluation was done with different-sized images as well as by using two types of machines,one with two and another with four *** results demonstrated that both the speedup and efficiency are highly dependent of the number of *** emphasized that a large number of threads does not always represent a better performance.

This paper reports diffusion suppression in gel dosimetery by using nanocomposite gel. A Fricke xylenol gel (FXG) and a dichromate gel (DCG) were selected for adding a small amount of nanoclay (Laponite XLG). The diffusion coefficient and T1 distribution were evaluated by irradiating the gel dosimeter with a heavy ion beam. As a result, these gels showed improvement in the diffusion coefficient. In particular, by addition of the clay, the DCG exhibited diffusion-free characteristics. Moreover, it exhibited high stability after irradiation. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) has opened the way for comparative studies of cosmic rays (CRs) and high-energy objects in the Milky Way (MW) and in other, external, star-forming galaxies. Using 2 yr of observations with the Fermi LAT, Local Group galaxy M31 was detected as a marginally extended gamma-ray source, while only an upper limit has been derived for the other nearby galaxy M33. We revisited the gamma-ray emission in the direction of M31 and M33 using more than 7 yr of LAT Pass 8 data in the energy range 0.1−100 GeV, presenting detailed morphological and spectral analyses. M33 remains undetected, and we computed an upper limit of 2.0×10−12 erg cm−2 s−1 on the 0.1−100 GeV energy flux (95% confidence level). This revised upper limit remains consistent with the observed correlation between gamma-ray luminosity and star-formation rate tracers and implies an average CR density in M33 that is at most half of that of the MW. M31 is detected with a significance of nearly 10σ. Its spectrum is consistent with a power law with photon index Γ = 2.4±0.1stat+syst and a 0.1−100 GeV energy flux of (5.6±0.6stat+syst)×10−12 erg cm−2 s−1. M31 is detected to be extended with a 4σ significance. The spatial distribution of the emission is consistent with a uniform-brightness disk with a radius of 0◦.4 and no offset from the center of the galaxy, but nonuniform intensity distributions cannot be excluded. The flux from M31 appears confined to the inner regions of the galaxy and does not fill the disk of the galaxy or extend far from it. The gamma-ray signal is not correlated with regions rich in gas or star-formation activity, which suggests that the emission is not interstellar in origin, unless the energetic particles radiating in gamma rays do not originate in recent star formation. Alternative and nonexclusive interpretations are that the emission results from a population of millisecond pulsars dispersed in the bulge and disk of M31 by disrupted globular clusters or from

The region around the Galactic center (GC) is now well established to be brighter at energies of a few GeV than expected from conventional models of diffuse gamma-ray emission and catalogs of known gamma-ray sources. We study the GeV excess using 6.5 years of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We characterize the uncertainty of the GC excess spectrum and morphology due to uncertainties in cosmic-ray source distributions and propagation, uncertainties in the distribution of interstellar gas in the Milky Way, and uncertainties due to a potential contribution from the Fermi bubbles. We also evaluate uncertainties in the excess properties due to resolved point sources of gamma rays. The Galactic center is of particular interest as it would be expected to have the brightest signal from annihilation of weakly interacting massive dark matter particles. However, control regions along the Galactic plane, where a dark-matter signal is not expected, show excesses of similar amplitude relative to the local background. Based on the magnitude of the systematic uncertainties, we conservatively report upper limits for the annihilation cross section as function of particle mass and annihilation channel. This paper presents a new code compression method in which we merge the Huffman algorithm with the formation of patterns of blocks and three dictionaries. We seek two consecutive blocks in two levels, one of them into compressed code and the other related to uncompressed code. We have used simulation with SimpleScalar and programs from MiBench. Our proposal has achieved a compression rate of 32.6% and 31.9%, respectively, for ARM and MIPS processor.

The increasing adoption of mobile devices can improve the collaborative participation, especially in data acquiring, of people in their space: where they live or where they work. Based in this kind of crowdsourcing, we create a proposal for The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), specially its campus of “Ilha do Fundão” (Fundão Island), which has a fragmented culture since its origin. Nowadays, it is still possible to find not only a geographical distance, but also informational disaggregation and waste of resources and opportunities. In order to minimize these problems, as well motivating the collaborative work, we create an approach using mobile computing, called UFRJ Social. The main idea is that the crowd (students, professor, employers, visitors and anyone who stay in the campus) can provide information or opinions of any place (infrastructure, events, classes, bus stations and others). This application is context-sensitive, and users can receive recommendations by their geographical location and interests. This approach was evaluated in a study case and the results were positive. In this paper we also analyze how this approach can be extended in other scenarios.

In this context, the present paper shows the use of the Fractal method for image compression. It is a lossy method known by providing higher indexes of file reduction through a highly time consuming phase. In this way, we developed a model of parallel application for exploiting the power of multiprocessor architectures in order to get the Fractal method advantages in a feasible time. The evaluation was done with different-sized images as well as by using two types of machines, one with two and another with four cores. The results demonstrated that both the speedup and efficiency are highly dependent of the number of cores. They emphasized that a large number of threads does not always represent a better performance.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY The 13th Annual SIG/USE Research Symposium focused on ways mobile technologies have influenced information needs, seeking and use. In her keynote address, Caroline Haythornthwaite framed movement as changing contributorship, interactions and participation in multiple knowledge communities. A series of Ignite talks on the common theme of mobility followed, with topics ranging from mobile phones as the preferred Internet access device, credibility of mobile applications and online resources and public libraries' use of social media and mobile applications to mobile apps promoting health information literacy and supporting teleworking. Small groups brainstormed on opportunities, challenges and research ideas inspired by the theme. Annual SIG/USE awards recognized scholars for innovative work on topics including refugees' information seeking, factors influencing scholars' data sharing and drawings as visual representations of information. The symposium closed with encouragement to consider how information on the move influences perspectives and research into information behavior.

We report a successful implementation of the sharedmemory parallelization using OpenMP to the dose calculation by the Monte Carlo particle and heavy-ion transport code PHITS. The OpenMP shared-memory parallelization is better suited than the MPI distributed-memory parallelization which is originally implemented in the PHITS code in the case of human voxel data which requires a large memory space. We have confirmed that the same results can be obtained with and without the shared-memory parallelization by the modified PHITS code. Sufficiently high OpenMP parallelization efficiency (92.4% with 8 parallelized cores within a single node) is achieved even when the special treatment for accessing memory to avoid memory contentions is taken into account. We implement the OpenMP parallelization on top of the MPI parallelization originally included in PHITS so that the modified code works in a hybrid way such that the distributed-memory parallelization for different nodes by MPI and the shared-memory parallelization among the cores in a single node by OpenMP. The performance has been checked on supercomputers: RICC and K computer. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents results of a time-domain spherical-multipole near-to-far-field transformation together with a moment expansion applied to antenna radiation patterns. The equivalence principle is applied to the tangential fields all over the FDTD/WP-PML spatial grid and the use of the spherical-multipole expansion leads to the near-to-far-field transformation, and energy and power norms of temporal signals are used to obtain the antenna radiation patterns for transient and steady-state responses. Such approach is employed to obtain UWB antenna radiated fields and radiation patterns directly in time-domain, it being more convenient to perform an unified characterization in time and frequency domains. © 2013 SBMO/SBMag.
