The development of programs for parallel architectures focusing to achieve high indices of performance is a hard task. The programmer must deal with two classes of problems, one related to describing the application concurrency and data dependencies, and other related to exploiting efficiently the processing resources of the architecture, in order to obtain an efficient implementation for a specific hardware configuration. Since cluster technology allows building parallel computers are highly scalable - particularly in terms of number of nodes, processors and amount of memory - programming and execution levels must be considered independently to achieve performance portability. This paper presents Anahy, an environment for exploiting high performance computing on cluster architectures. It is highlighted the Anahy programming interface and some features of its implementation as well as a performance evaluation.

The Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering & Sciences (SBES) was established in 2001 to provide graduate programs and enhance research collaboration between the universities.1 This school enables students to earn M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering, a joint M.D./Ph.D. through the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and a joint D.V.M./Ph.D. through the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Given that students may take face to face classes on either campus or classes via distance learning while residing on their home campus in either Blacksburg or Winston-Salem, new instructional technology solutions and infrastructure are required to support this initiative. A project team, consisting of members from Wake Forest and Virginia Tech, was established to develop this innovative learning environment. A key feature of this learning environment is the ability for the professor to easily interact with students using multiple types of instructional technologies. The use of these technologies is particularly important given the course content from the medical and engineering disciplines. This paper will address network infrastructure solutions and lessons learned from the development of this state-of-the-art distance learning environment.

One of the main problems related to regulatory network reconstruction from expression data concerns the small size and low quality of the available dataset. When trying to infer a model from little information it is necessary to give much more precedence to generalization, rather than specificity, otherwise, any attempt will be fated to overfitting. In this paper we address this issue by focusing on data sparseness and noisy information, and propose a density estimation technique that achieves regularized curves when data is scarce. We first compare the proposed method with the EM algorithm for mixture models on density estimation problems. Next, we apply the method, together with Bayesian networks, on realistic simulations of static gene networks, and compare the obtained results with the standard discrete Bayesian network model. We intend to demonstrate that adopting a discrete approach is not justifiable when only a small amount of information is available.

Digital Humanities (DH) and Digital Library (DL) projects are complex systems that require specialized programming skills. Many encoders cannot take their work to the next level by transforming their collections of structured XML texts into a web searchable and browsable database. Often teams of text encoders are able to encode their texts with a high degree of sophistication, but unless they have funds to hire a programmer, their collections far too often remain on local disk storage away from public access. aims to relieve some of this burden by providing the tools to manage an extensible, modular and configurable XML-based repository which will house, search, browse, and display documents encoded in TEI-Lite on the world wide web. provides an administrative interface that allows DL and DH administrators to upload and delete documents from a web accessible repository;analyze XML documents to determine elements for searching and browsing;refine ontology development;select inter and intra document links;partition the repository into collections;create backups;generate search, browse, and display pages;customize the interface;and associate XSL transformation scripts and CSS stylesheets to obtain different target outputs (HTML, PDF, etc.). © The Author. To address the need to improve the Commonwealth graduate Engineering program (CGEP) at Virginia Tech, the college relied upon the expertise of students completing graduate theses and group projects in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department. This arrangement allowed graduate students to work on real problems as well as conduct applied research projects for an organization - the College of Engineering. The students benefited from the experience and the college benefited from the result. CGEP is a coalition of five Virginia universities that deliver engineering graduate degree programs through distance learning. Three years ago this program was under review by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. Given that the CGEP director and administrators were new to this program, it was a high priority to establish metrics to determine the program's success. Another high priority was to search for expertise in the area of performance measurements. During the past three years, progress has been made in creating a continuous-process improvement plan for the program through the application of management systems methodologies. This paper discusses how graduate student expertise was used to assist with improving administrative aspects of the CGEP. It also describes the progression of projects and how data was analyzed and used to establish future direction. The concept described in this paper is traditional, yet the success of the methods used to improve the Commonwealth graduate Engineering program offers a new way to apply management system methodologies.

An initiative to promote the formation of voluntary study groups amongst engineering faculty at Virginia Tech is described. The groups provide an opportunity for faculty to freely discuss and exchange their teaching ideas and collaborate with more and less experienced colleagues, thus reducing the isolation they often experience when facing instructional challenges. The formation of study groups centered in engineering departments has been encouraged through a structure independent of the normal department administration. As a result of this effort participation in study groups has rapidly risen and currently over one third of all engineering faculty participate. If only by this measure the initiative has had an impact on the overall quality of teaching in the College of Engineering.

We start from a case study of an architecture company and move on to a framework of agents to identify and inform conceptual design. The processes and problems exhibited by the company involved are quite common and can be found in other similar companies. Our intent is to instrument the current process using agent technology, in an effort to improve global awareness during the conceptual design phase, allowing the designers to design so as to facilitate later steps and optimize the process as a whole.

At 70 miles per hour, overcoming aerodynamic drag represents about 65% of the total energy expenditure for a typical heavy truck vehicle. The goal of this US Department of Energy supported consortium is to establish a clear understanding of the drag producing flow phenomena. This is being accomplished through joint experiments and computations, leading to the 'smart' design of drag reducing devices. This paper will describe our objective and approach, provide an overview of our efforts and accomplishments, and discuss our future direction. © 2004 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

This article discusses the application of the peer review process as a pedagogical instrument for the promotion of written expression, collaborative work, critical thinking, and professional responsibility among Informatics and Engineering majors. The approach is introduced with a motivation, followed by a discussion about common principles of current learning paradigms and the peer review process. This work is being conducted in Brazil, where we intend to promote a learning paradigm shift through the application of peer review in education. A framework for this application is outlined, together with an account of results from experiences and a discussion about the skills that this approach exercises, especially with regard to widely accepted curricula and codes of ethics and professional conduct. Further research and development efforts are conjectured.
