Machine learning algorithms are fundamentally driven by the data provided by humans;consequently, the decisions made by those algorithms are not free from human bias. This is particularly evident in the case of facial analysis systems that employ machine learning algorithms. Recent studies have shown that the decisions made by many of the commercially available facial analysis systems are prejudiced against certain groups of race, ethnicity, age, gender and culture. Further studies have identified that the underlying reason for such biased decisions is that the open source material available for facial image databases which are used in commerce and academia to train the algorithms has meager diversity in these categories. To compound this issue, facial analysis technology is promoted by influential companies and artificial intelligence service providers without affirming the fairness and accuracy of the decisions given by these systems. To minimize bias and ensure representation of the Middle Eastern population in the imminent growth of this technology, we propose the development of two Arab face databases along with an algorithmic audit involving seven commercially available facial analysis systems. Of the databases, the first, Arab-LEANA, will include 300 Arab subjects' face images with variation in lighting, expression, accessory, nationality and age (LEANA). The second, Arab Public Figures Faces (APFF), will contain images and videos of 300 Arab public figures captured "in the wild". Faces for APFF will be selected manually from the internet since manual selection of faces will result in a high degree of variability in scale, pose, expression, illumination, age, occlusion and make-up. These databases will provide the worldwide community of face recognition researchers with a large-scale, diverse collection of Arab face images for training and evaluating algorithms toward developing a more representative, and therefore more robust, capacity for facial analysis. Insect compound eyes have been garnered a great attention in the fields of optical design, owing to their remarkably economical, but sophisticated visual structures and process. However, a rigid and planar imaging sensor hardly supporting curved micro-optics hinders full implementation of insect vision system. Here, we present a bioinspired artificial compound eye camera for wide field of view and high-resolution imaging based on the hemispherical microlens array and tapered imaging fiber bundles. The hemispherical microlens array focuses a wide field of view image on the curved facet of tapered fiber bundle, which relays the image to another facet contacted on commercial image sensor providing high resolution. The integrated compound eye module suggests a facile way to fill the technical gap for practical applications of artificial insect vision systems.

The demand for electricity has increased rapidly and, for this reason, there is a need to efficiently use it. In this way, the identification of residential appliances enables such use for consumers and is crucial for demand response programs. Due to the variety of appliances in homes and their dynamic behavior, the search for patterns that explain and allow the correct labeling of temporal windows becomes a challenging task, since a window may contain more than one appliance. In this sense, the present paper proposes the transformation of time-series into images, using Gramian angular field and recurrence plots. The dataset composed of images was submitted to the labeling process, considering the use of convolutional neural networks. A comparative analysis was performed using the UK-DALE dataset. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed feature engineering stage, since the labeling task reached F1-scores until 94 %.

This paper provides a design of a control circuit for cache memory with no time overhead for cache miss conditions. this type of circuits is very important in modern computers design to enhance program execution time and increase the processor performance. The main objective of the designed circuit is to provide a high performance of program execution and avoiding cache miss. The focus is on finding an optimal method that provides fast program execution. This is due to the fact that most of the existing methods are still producing cache miss. The proposed method is based on utilizing the control flow graph (CFG) of the program being executed. The proposed solution works with dividing the program into basic blocks of instructions. The program blocks and the execution paths are modeled by the CFG. A program traverses an execution path according to its current state which is represented by its data variables. If a block is required to be entered from the current block, that block is already available in the cache. This leads to eliminating cache miss. In this paper we provide the design for a cache memory control circuit that manages the cache according to the information of the CFG. Many experiments were run and tested using simulation that evaluated the proposed control circuit. © 2021 IEEE.

Patent has been an increasingly important role in the world because it is not only significant to protect the invention of the company's business but also to generate revenue from the commercialization. WIPO (2018) reports that the repository has many patents so, to assess patent, it consumes time and requires various expertise. Generally, several models have been developed to address this matter, which to assess using a questionnaire tool for portfolios by human. Perhaps, there is not precise because it is assessed base on personal bias or previous experience of expertise. So that, occurs bias any limitation exists that our research will address by artificial intelligence. Thus, this research applies a Natural Language programming to assess for commercial of the patent. Then, the obtained data is used to assigned factors and calculate the model for assessing the commercialization of patent. This finding should deliver an alternative effective patent assessment, which is tool addresses, some current deficiency patent assessment for commercialization. © 2022 PICMET.

The 5-level tone value labeling system helps characterize pitch contours of syllables for L2 Mandarin learners and teachers to facilitate tone acquisition and tone error analysis, respectively. In the past, linguistic experts did the tone value labeling and initially used it to represent or analyze the pitch contours of monosyllables. Some L2 Mandarin teachers also used the tone value labeling system to analyze pitch contours of continuous speech and illustrate pitch realizations for L2 Mandarin learners. However, the pitch contours of the labeled tone values of continuous speech were rarely objectively measured or analyzed. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of tone values of a continuous read speech corpus uttered by six Romance L2 Mandarin learners. The pitch contours of the tone value classes were explored, and some experiments related to the automatic recognition of tone and tone value classes were reported. We expect the results reported by this study to shed light on the development of an automatic tone value classification mechanism, which will be used in computer-assisted pronunciation training for L2 learners in the future.

Providing robust prognosis predictions for cancers with limited data samples remains a challenge for precision oncology. In this study, we propose a novel approach that combines multi-task learning (MTL) and graph neural networks (GNNs) to address this issue. By representing gene-gene interactions as a graph network, our approach leverages multi-task learning to effectively capture the relationships of genes relevant to the oncogenesis and progression of breast, lung, and colon cancer. We demonstrate that our approach improves the cancer prognosis prediction for cancers with fewer samples, such as colon adenocarcinoma, by leveraging the shared gene-gene interactions across different cancer types, obtaining increases in the area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) of 24%. Our work contributes to the field of smart healthcare by demonstrating the potential of MTL and GNNs for enhancing cancer prognosis prediction, even with limited data samples.

Reconfigurable optical devices are increasingly recognized for their potential in enhancing high-density optical interconnects, photonic switching, and memory systems. While various optical modulators utilizing active materials have been successfully developed, achieving high modulation depth with low operating voltage in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum remains a significant challenge. This spectrum is particularly important for free-space communication and imaging technologies. In this context, an electrically switchable device employing Tamm plasmon coupled with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) has been introduced. This innovative approach enables substantial modulation depth throughout the NIR spectrum, effectively absorbing incident light even under epsilon near zero conditions. The device boasts an impressive optical modulation efficiency of over 88% at a CMOS-compatible voltage of ±1 V, achieved through meticulous electrical manipulation of charge carrier density via an electrochemical doping/dedoping process. Moreover, this device opens new avenues for creating non-volatile optical memory storage solutions, exhibiting rewritable multi-memory states and demonstrating long-term potentiation/depression capabilities, akin to neuromorphic behavior.

This paper proposes a reconfiguration for a single-phase, double conversion uninterruptible power supply (UPS). With the addition of two static switches to the original circuit, the UPS mitigates the ripple in the current, through battery discharge performed by two legs. Other than these switches, the circuit topology is preserved. The preliminary results show a satisfactory level of ripples for the inductor current and suitable power quality for the output voltage.

Amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) has recently made significant advancement as a key material for electronic component design owing to its compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technologies. A comprehensive analysis of reliability-related issues is required to determine the true potential of a-IGZO-based devices for next-generation electronics applications. To address this objective, we electrically characterize scaled-channel a-IGZO thin film transistors (TFTs) under positive bias (temperature) stress (PB(T)S). Both PBS and PBTS are characterized by positive and negative V_th shift, respectively, during the various gate stresses. In particular, the negative V_th shift is explained by the generation of donor-like traps stimulated by ionization of oxygen vacancy/hydrogen at elevated temperature. The TFTs exhibit relatively decent stability during the PBS operation. The analysis of devices with variant channel dimensions implies that long-channel devices exhibit relatively higher stability and performance compared to the short-channel ones. We also observe that the V_th can be controllably adjusted by employing the top gate (TG) with bottom gate sweep. Moreover, the stress-induced partial recovery mechanism is experimentally observed owing to detrapping of charges. Generally, the reported results infer a perceptive understanding of scaled-channel a-IGZO-TFTs which helps with shaping performance-enhancement strategies. © 2024 The Author(s).
