The emergence of tethered- drones has introduced a paradigm shift in infrastructure assessments. Providing a dynamic solution for the limited flight time and communication reliability of using a drone alone, incorporating a tether into the system yielded additional benefits for the visual assist in inspections. Furthermore, the use of a tether provides precise localization for the unmanned aerial vehicle in GPS-denied environments where vision-based exteroception is not available. In this study, a new localization strategy for a suspended tethered - drone was introduced. The approach leveraged three known parameters, the tether wire length, component of tension, and azimuth angle, to determine the 3D position of the tethered-drone. A hybrid set-up was used for a more accurate wire length measurement. Moreover, using a neural network, the trained data sets garnered 0.9936, 0.9920, and 0.9934 for training, validation, and overall regression scores, respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

In medical imaging, harmonization plays a crucial role in reducing variability arising from diverse imaging devices and protocols. Patient images obtained under different computed tomography (CT) scan conditions may show varying performance when analyzed using an artificial intelligence model or quantitative assessment. This necessitates the need for harmonization. Virtual imaging trial (VIT) through digital simulation can be used to develop and assess the effectiveness of harmonization models to minimize data variability. The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of a VIT platform for harmonization across a range of lung imaging scenarios. To ensure consistent and reliable analysis across different virtual imaging datasets, we conducted a multi-objective assessment encompassing three typical task-based scenarios: lung structure segmentation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) quantification, and lung nodule quantification. A physics-informed deep neural network was applied as the unified harmonization model for all three tasks. Evaluation results before and after harmonization reveal three findings: 1) modestly improved Dice scores and reduced Hausdorff Distances at 95th Percentile in lung structure segmentation;2) decreased variation in biomarkers and radiomics features in COPD quantification;and 3) increased number of radiomics features with high intraclass correlation coefficient in lung nodule quantification. The results demonstrate the significant potential of harmonization across various task-based scenarios and provide a benchmark for the design of efficient harmonizers. © 2025 SPIE.

Spacecraft potential effects on low-energy ion measurements to be made by probe B1 of Comet Interceptor

Spacecraft charging causes notorious issues for low-energy plasma measurements. The charged particles are accelerated towards or repelled from the spacecraft surface, affecting both their energy and travel direction. The latter results in a distortion of the effective field of view (FOV) of the instrument making the measurements. The Comet Interceptor mission, planned to be launched in 2029, will make a flyby of a long-period or interstellar comet that ideally is dynamically new. The mission comprises one main spacecraft A, developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), and two sub-probes B1 and B2, developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and ESA, respectively. The low-energy plasma measurements made by Comet Interceptor will likely be affected by the spacecraft potential in the case of low relative flyby velocities. On probe B1, the Cometary Ion Mass Spectrometer (CIMS) of the Plasma Suite is an ion mass spectrometer, capable of measuring ions with energies down to 10 eV/q. In this work, we use the Spacecraft Plasma Interaction Software to study the influence of the spacecraft potential on the low-energy ion measurements to be made by CIMS in the inner cometary magnetosphere. The results show that the effective FOV of CIMS is distorted at low energies when the flyby velocity is low. The distortion level is highly geometry dependent, and the largest distortions are caused by the magnetometer boom. Furthermore, the results show that cold ions with bulk velocities in the range 1-10 km s-1, flowing both radially away from and inward towards the nucleus, are detectable by the instrument considering the nominal observation geometry. © 2024 The Author(s).

With the rapid proliferation of IoT and Cloud networks and the corresponding number of devices, handling incoming requests has become a significant challenge. Task scheduling problems have emerged as a common concern, necessitating the exploration of new methods for request management. This paper proposes a novel approach called the Fuzzy Inverse Markov Data Envelopment Analysis Process (FIMDEAP). Our method combines the strengths of the Fuzzy Inverse Data Envelopment Analysis (FIDEA) and Fuzzy Markov Decision Process (FMDP) techniques to enable the efficient selection of physical and virtual machines while operating in a fuzzy mode. We represent data as triangular fuzzy numbers and employ the alpha-cut method to solve the proposed models. The paper provides a mathematical optimization model for the proposed method and presents a numerical example for illustration. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of our method in a cloud environment through simulations. The results demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing methods, namely PSO + ACO and FBPSO + FBACO, in terms of key metrics, including energy consumption, execution cost, response time, gain of cost, and makespan. © The Author(s) 2023.

Image captioning aims to generate a description of visual contents with natural language automatically. This is useful in several potential applications, such as image understanding and virtual assistants. With recent advances in deep neural networks, natural and semantic text generation has been improved in image captioning. However, maintaining the gradient flow between neurons in consecutive layers becomes challenging as the network gets deeper. In this paper, we propose to integrate an auxiliary classifier in the residual recurrent neural network, which enables the gradient flow to reach the bottom layers for enhanced caption generation. Experiments on the MSCOCO and VizWiz datasets demonstrate the advantage of our proposed approach over the state-of-the-art approaches in several performance metrics. © 2022 European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO. Describing the semantic content of an image via natural language, known as image captioning, has recently attracted substantial interest in computer vision and language processing communities. Current image captioning approaches are mainly based on an encoder-decoder framework in which visual information is extracted by an image encoder and captions are generated by a text decoder, using convolution neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN), respectively. Although this framework is promising for image captioning, it has limitations in utilizing the encoded visual information for generating grammatically and semantically correct captions in the RNN decoder. More specifically, the RNN decoder is ineffective in using the contextual information from the encoded data due to its limited ability in capturing long-term complex dependencies. Inspired by the advantage of gated recurrent unit (GRU), in this paper, we propose an extension of conventional RNN by introducing a multi-layer GRU that modulates the most relevant information inside the unit to enhance the semantic coherence of captions. Experimental results on the MSCOCO dataset show the superiority of our proposed approach over the state-of-the-art approaches in several performance metrics. © 2022 European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO. Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB) are promising for large-scale energy storage due to their long life and environmental benefits. Accurate temperature prediction is key to optimizing VRFB performance and longevity. This study compares the performance of four machine learning models, i.e., 1D CNN, Particle Swarm Optimization - Support Vector Regressor (PSO-SVR), Decision Tree (DT), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), using a publicly available dataset. Results show that KNN achieves the best results with test Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.0424 (average) and test R2 of 0.9746 (average), demonstrating strong predictive accuracy. 1D CNN, however, shows poor generalization. These findings suggest that non-parametric models like KNN and DT are highly effective for VRFB temperature prediction. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.

Double remnant polarization (2Pr values are increased significantly from 17.1μC/cm2 to 39.9μC/cm2 by reducing the TiNx interfacial capping layer (ICL) thickness from 3 nm to 1 nm in the Ru/TiNx/Hf0.5 Zr0.5O2(HZO)/TiN structure owing to lower monoclinic (m) phase with respect to orthorhombic (o) plus rhombohedral (r) phases. These phases are observed by geometrical phase analysis (GPA) of high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images. An optimized 2 nm TiNx ICL ferroelectric memory shows lowest fatigue and mechanism is higher m-phase starting to grow from the HZO/TiN BE interface, which is evidenced in the HRTEM image after long endurance of 1011 cycles under high ±4 MV/cm, 0.5μs (remaining higher 2Pr value of 20μC/cm2). © 1980-2012 IEEE.
