A Hybrid Inference Engine to Predict Uncertain Sugar Content for Sugar Industry

The sugar industry is facing challenges in increasing productivity to meet consumer demand. One opportunity for productivity improvement lies in ensuring sugar content. This study proposes a hybrid model to predict sugar content by considering uncertainty factors. A hybrid model combining fuzzy subtractive clustering, and a fuzzy inference system is proposed to predict sugar content. The clustering results using silhouette and fuzzy subtractive clustering successfully identified 6 cluster centres from 2225 datasets collected in a sugar industry in East Java Province. The hybrid inference engine model is designed with fuzzy rules derived from the clustered data. Two inference models are developed: triangular and Gaussian fuzzy numbers. The testing results indicate that the hybrid model with triangular fuzzy numbers shows the smallest error with an R2 value of 0.95. This model is possible to applied in the sugar industry for decision makers in improving productivity with taking attention into uncertain factors influencing sugar content.

This paper provides an examination of the impact of lightning strikes on a 220 kV double circuit (D/C) high voltage transmission line in Bhutan. The study employs the ATP-EMTP software to identify the leading causes of transmission line faults, which are primarily attributed to lightning strikes. Since the transmission lines run through areas in Bhutan that are prone to severe weather conditions and lightning strikes, they are vulnerable to damage, leading to an unreliable power supply. To address this issue, the author proposes several solutions, such as enhancing the tower footing resistance and installing line surge arresters. The author also created models of different transmission towers and analyzed an 18 km stretch of the transmission line that is highly susceptible to lightning strikes. © 2023 IEEE.

Heralded optical entanglement distribution via lossy quantum channels: a comparative study

Quantum entanglement serves as a foundational resource for various quantum technologies. In optical systems, entanglement distribution relies on the indistinguishability and spatial overlap of photons. Heralded schemes play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability of entanglement generation by detecting ancillary photons to signal the creation of desired entangled states. However, photon losses in quantum channels remain a significant challenge, limiting the distance and capacity of entanglement distributions. This study suggests three heralded schemes for distributing multipartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states via lossy quantum channels. These schemes differ both qualitatively in their network architecture (centralized or decentralized) and photon source requirements (Bell states or single-photons), and quantitatively in their success probabilities and heralding efficiency. Through comprehensive analysis incorporating both practical implementation considerations and theoretical performance metrics, we find that each scheme offers distinct advantages depending on the number of parties, channel distance, and security requirements. The decentralized scheme proves particularly advantageous for networks requiring balanced information distribution, while centralized schemes may offer better performance for smaller networks. This analysis provides insights into designing resilient heralded circuits for quantum information processing over lossy channels, considering both architectural constraints and performance requirements. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

Design of mmWave Broadband Rotary Joint and 360° Beam-Steering Rotenna Based on Gap Waveguide Technology

This work presents the design and fabrication of a groove gap waveguide-based rotary joint and a rotenna (rotary antenna) with 360° mechanical beam-steering for wideband mmWave applications. The proposed rotary joint incorporates two WR-22 to groove gap waveguide transitions, connected back-to-back with an innovative transformer. A key advantage of gap waveguide technology is its ability to operate without physical contact between the rotary joint's components, allowing the rotor to rotate freely near the stator with an air gap, while wave leakage is suppressed. By replacing common coaxial connectors with standard waveguide flanges and introducing a novel transformer between the rotor and stator, we have successfully developed a wideband rotary joint suitable for mmWaves. To demonstrate the practical applicability of this concept, we designed a rotenna with 360° mechanical beam-steering. This design addresses the common limitations of electronically steerable antennas, such as limited steering range, gain degradation, and high cost and complexity. To validate the concept, prototypes of the proposed rotary joint and rotenna were fabricated and measured. The measured and simulated results show good agreement. The rotary joint exhibits a 44.4% fractional bandwidth over the frequency range of 35 to 55 GHz with an insertion loss below 0.68 dB. Additionally, the engineered rotenna demonstrates a peak realized gain of 13 dBi with no scan loss over the full 360° steering range. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

One way to save time and resources in the human recruitment and hiring process is to post open job positions on the Internet, but the overload of applications creates challenges for hiring managers and companies to select an adequate candidate. One of the solutions is to apply intelligent tools such as Deep Learning and recommender system algorithms to speed up the hiring process and identify the right candidates. In this paper, we propose a two-fold algorithmic approach to 1) building an RNN classifier for resume classification;2) using cosine similarity for resume recommendation to find a candidate that fits job requirements best after selecting all the resumes that belong to the right category. The performance of the proposed RNN classifier is evaluated in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and confusion matrix criteria. The experiment results have shown that the RNN classifier performs better than the other classifiers such as GNB, Linear SVM, RF, and BERT on the same dataset. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

The scarcity of annotated medical images is a major bottleneck in developing learning models for medical image analysis. Hence, recent studies have focused on pretrained models with fewer annotation requirements that can be fine-tuned for various downstream tasks. However, existing approaches are mainly 3D adaptions of 2D approaches ill-suited for 3D medical imaging data. Motivated by this gap, we propose novel domain-aware multi-task learning tasks to pretrain a 3D Swin Transformer for brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our method considers the domain knowledge in brain MRI by incorporating brain anatomy and morphology as well as standard pretext tasks adapted for 3D imaging in a contrastive learning setting. We pretrain our model using large-scale brain MRI data of 13,687 samples spanning several large-scale databases. Our method outperforms existing supervised and self-supervised methods in three downstream tasks of Alzheimer’s disease classification, Parkinson’s disease classification, and age prediction tasks. The ablation study of the proposed pretext tasks shows the effectiveness of our pretext tasks. Ensuring reliable communication can be incredibly challenging in emergencies due to the breakdown of conventional infrastructure. However, a promising solution is on the horizon: the integration of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) onto unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), known as UAV-RIS. This innovative approach holds the potential to offer agile and adaptable communication services during crises, overcoming the limitations of traditional systems. This paper establishes an innovative UAV-RIS system with an active RIS to enhance the uplink communication between ground devices (GDs) and the air base station (ABS). We present an advanced communication strategy utilizing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for UAV-RIS-supported uplink communication in dynamic emergencies. This scheme is designed to optimize the energy efficiency of the UAV-RIS communication system while adhering to quality of service (QoS) constraints for all GDs. It achieves this by jointly optimizing the trajectory of the UAV-RIS and the phase of the active RIS, ensuring efficient and reliable communication in challenging environments. To optimize the performance of the system, we propose a hierarchical Proximal Policy Optimization (H-PPO) algorithm and the upper and lower layers of H-PPO optimize the trajectory and phase control, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that our scheme can effectively learn the communication strategy to enhance the performance of dynamic emergency communication networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Graph neural networks are a promising deep learning method that can apply graph structures to various tasks. In real-world scenarios, we often have heterogeneous graphs, wherein different node and edge types capture complex interactions between nodes. High-dimensional node features provide rich information about the target nodes. Conventional heterogeneous graph neural networks (HGNN) focus more on graph structures than node features and may have difficulties extracting knowledge from complex node features. In this study, we propose a novel framework, the tree-boosted heterogeneous graph neural network abbreviated as TreeXGNN, which could efficiently and automatically extract target node features via gradient-boosted decision trees (GBDT). It integrates community structure information with proper fusion modules and a shared feature space design on HGNN. We achieved state-of-the-art performance on the three well-known heterogeneous graph benchmark datasets, IMDB, DBLP, and ACM, and significantly improved performance compared to previous studies. Our work paves the foundation for integrating tree-based models to boost HGNNs for general community analysis. © 2023 IEEE.
