Despite the potential benefits that the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) can bring to the system, it may cause problems related to power quality constraints, such $as$ reverse power flow in substation and overvoltages. An effective approach to address these problems involves the adoption of reactive and active power control in grid-tie inverters associated with DER. Therefore, this paper assesses the impacts of grid-tie inverter control modes, including both Volt-Var and Volt-Watt strategies, on the DER hosting capacity. In order to improve the overall system operation, modifications in the Volt-Var and Volt-Watt curves were proposed. It is noteworthy that these control strategies can have adverse effects on certain distribution system performance indicators, such $as$ voltage deviation and power losses; for this reason, these indicators are also evaluated in this study. A stochastic approach was adopted to deal with the uncertainties associated with DERs and loads. Finally, from tests conducted in the IEEE 33-bus test system, it was concluded that the proper adjustment of the Volt-Var and Volt-Watt control curves significantly influences DER hosting capacity, $as$ well $as$ voltage deviation and power losses.

In offshore aquaculture operations, personnel equipped with diving gear are often necessary to inspect the underwater net cages for damage, particularly on the sea floor. This manual inspection process is time-consuming and complex. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a computer vision solution for identifying damage in underwater net cages to address the inefficiencies and challenges of traditional manual inspections. The proposed scheme utilizes a high-performance multi-branch computational architecture designed based on ShuffleNet architecture to detect net cage damage more efficiently. Experimental results demonstrate that this work performs well on the ImageNet ILSVRC-2010 dataset and achieves an accuracy of 88.54% in underwater net damage detection.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) recordings can be contaminated by electrocardiogram (ECG) signals when the monitored muscle is closed to the heart. Traditional signal processing-based approaches, such as high-pass filtering and template subtraction, have been used to remove ECG interference but are often limited in their effectiveness. Recently, neural network-based methods have shown greater promise for sEMG denoising, but they still struggle to balance both efficiency and effectiveness. In this study, we introduce MSEMG, a novel system that integrates the Mamba state space model with a convolutional neural network to serve as a lightweight sEMG denoising model. We evaluated MSEMG using sEMG data from the Non-Invasive Adaptive Prosthetics database and ECG signals from the MIT-BIH Normal Sinus Rhythm Database. The results show that MSEMG outperforms existing methods, generating higher-quality sEMG signals using fewer parameters. © 2025 IEEE.

Robots that operate autonomously require a path planner that ensures the robot reaches the desired position in a safe manner. The robot will be able to achieve greater speeds along the path if the path is smooth, minimizing the effort of the controller. This work presents two new path planners, called DE-Spline and DE-NURBS. These planners provide a smooth path directly by the cost function optimization using the algorithm L-SHADE (Success-History based Adaptive of Differential Evolution using linear population size reduction algorithm) and two path’s parametrization: Ferguson cubic spline and NURBS. Additionally, it ensures that the robot reaches the target in the desired orientation. The planners are compared with a Vector Field-based planner, widely used in robot soccer. Based on the results, it has been found that both planners provide a smoother path along the shortest path, by accounting for the robot’s starting angle and its goal angle. Furthermore, DE-NURBS provides a greater degree of planning freedom than DE-Spline. © 2023 IEEE.

Small-scale permanent magnet motor to reach high torque density and low torque ripple is discussed in this research. To increase the torque density, meanwhile making the motor size smaller and lighter, the motor axial length within a constrained diameter is optimized in view of various pole-slot configurations. Different slot-poles are selected and various combinations are studied, and the stator windings are optimized. To compare the torque density and ripple of new designs, precise models are created and simulated through ANSYS Maxwell 2D FEA under constant operational conditions, such as rated speed, torque, and power. Over the new designs, the influence of loss and temperature distribution variations in motor elements are analyzed. The simulation results show that the proposed 20-pole 18-slot motor design will obtain superior torque density and lower torque ripple compared to the baseline design. The final design provides a 30.7 % improvement of the torque density within the same rated torque condition. © 2023 The Korean Institute of Power Electronics.

We numerically study current density dependence of magnetization dynamics in a local area induced by the spin-orbit torque as a source of spin waves. The precession frequency of magnetization dynamics shows large change at a critical current density, which controls the wave length of spin waves. The origin of the change is due to the increase of exchange field caused by the magnetization torsion at the interface between SOT-applied and non-applied regions. Our new finding gives a way to manipulate spin wave's properties by controlling the magnetization direction in a local area. © 2023 IEEE.

Magnetoquasistatic wireless power transfer can be used to charge and power electronic devices such as smartphones and small home appliances. However, existing coil-based transmitters, which are composed of wire conductors, have a limited range. Here, we show that multimode-quasistatic cavity resonance can provide room-scale wireless power transfer. The approach uses multidirectional, widely distributed currents on conductive surfaces that are placed around the target volume. It generates multiple, mutually unique, three-dimensional magnetic field patterns, where each pattern is attributed to different eigenmodes of a single room scale resonator. Using these modes together, a power delivery efficiency exceeding 37.1% can be achieved throughout a 3 m × 3 m × 2 m test room. With this approach, power exceeding 50 W could potentially be delivered to mobile receivers, while in accordance with safety guidelines. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Accurate anomaly classification in solar modules is crucial for efficient solar power system monitoring and maintenance. This study explores deep learning, specifically Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), for automated defect classification in thermal images. We employed transfer learning with pre-trained AlexNet and GoogleNet architectures, comparing static feature extraction and fine-tuning. Using a dataset of thermal images categorized as no anomaly, cracked, or soiled modules, the fully fine-tuned GoogleNet model achieved the highest classification accuracy 95.5%, outperforming AlexNet and traditional feature-based methods. GoogleNet's superior performance stems from its Inception modules, which learn more discriminative features by employing multiple convolutional filter sizes within the same layer, capturing complex thermal image patterns. Fine-tuning further boosts performance by adapting pre-trained knowledge to the specific task. These results demonstrate deep learning's potential for enhancing solar system maintenance reliability and efficiency.
