Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a type of diabetes mellitus that attacks the retina of the eye. DR will cause patients to experience blindness slowly. Generally, DR can be detected by using a special instrument called an ophthalmoscope to view the inside of the eyeball. However, in conditions where there is a very small difference between the normal image and the DR image, computer-based assistance is needed for maximizing image reading value. In this research, a method of image quality improvement will be carried out which will then be integrated with a classification algorithm based on deep learning. The results of image improvement using Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) shows that the average accuracy of the method on several models is very competitive, 91% for the VGG16 model, 95% for InceptionV3, and 97% for EfficientNet compared to the results original image which only has an accuracy of 87% for VGG16 model, 90% for InceptionV3 model, and 95% for EfficientNet. However, in ResNet34 better accuracy is obtained in the original image with an accuracy of 95% while in the CLAHE image the accuracy value is only 84%. The results of this comprehensive evaluation and recommendation of famous backbone networks can be useful in the computer-Aided diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. Convergence of Bi-Virus Epidemic Models with Non-Linear Rates on Networks - A Monotone Dynamical Systems Approach

We study convergence properties of competing epidemic models of the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) type. The SIS epidemic model has seen widespread popularity in modelling the spreading dynamics of contagions such as viruses, infectious diseases, or even rumors/opinions over contact networks (graphs). We analyze the case of two such viruses spreading on overlaid graphs, with non-linear rates of infection spread and recovery. We call this the non-linear bi-virus model and, building upon recent results, obtain precise conditions for global convergence of the solutions to a trichotomy of possible outcomes: a virus-free state, a single-virus state, and to a coexistence state. Our techniques are based on the theory of monotone dynamical systems (MDS), in contrast to Lyapunov based techniques that have only seen partial success in determining convergence properties in the setting of competing epidemics. We demonstrate how the existing works have been unsuccessful in characterizing a large subset of the model parameter space for bi-virus epidemics, including all scenarios leading to coexistence of the epidemics. To the best of our knowledge, our results are the first in providing complete convergence analysis for the bi-virus system with nonlinear infection and recovery rates on general graphs. © 2022, CC BY.

In recent years, 3DCG-related industries have grown rapidly and the demand for 3DCG content has increased. However, 3DCG production requires special skills and a lot of time. In particular, the creation of background data requires a lot of human resources at the production site because the data is huge and complex. Therefore, we propose an automatic creation system that generates 3D background data for 3DCG production. The proposed system consists of three functions: 3D model generation, generation parameter optimization, and fitness evaluation. The user inputs a landscape photograph as idea information into the system, and the system optimizes the generation parameters so that the 3D object shape approximates the input image. To evaluate the accuracy of the system's performance, we observe the optimization process and the 3D object output when a previously generated fractal image or landscape photos are input. Experimental results show that the system accurately optimizes the generation parameters and generates 3D objects that are almost identical to the shape of the fractal image. In addition, the parameters were also optimized with a certain degree of accuracy for landscape photographs for which no specific solution had been determined. © 2023 IEEE.

Reliable classification of sleep stages is crucial in sleep medicine and neuroscience research for providing valuable insights, diagnoses, and understanding of brain states. The current gold standard method for sleep stage classification is polysomnography (PSG). Unfortunately, PSG is an expensive and cumbersome process involving numerous electrodes, often conducted in an unfamiliar clinic and annotated by a professional. Although commercial devices like smartwatches track sleep, their performance is well below PSG. To address these disadvantages, we present a feed-forward neural network that achieves gold-standard levels of agreement using only a single lead of electrocardiography (ECG) data. Specifically, the median five-stage Cohen's kappa is 0.725 on a large, diverse dataset of 5 to 90-year-old subjects. Comparisons with a comprehensive meta-analysis of between-human inter-rater agreement confirm the non-inferior performance of our model. Finally, we developed a novel loss function to align the training objective with Cohen's kappa. Our method offers an inexpensive, automated, and convenient alternative for sleep stage classification—further enhanced by a real-time scoring option. Cardiosomnography, or a sleep study conducted with ECG only, could take expert-level sleep studies outside the confines of clinics and laboratories and into realistic settings. This advancement democratizes access to high-quality sleep studies, considerably enhancing the field of sleep medicine and neuroscience. It makes less-expensive, higher-quality studies accessible to a broader community, enabling improved sleep research and more personalized, accessible sleep-related healthcare interventions. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

With an emphasis on the sensitivity of various gate-sensing layers, the current work sought to examine how well Ion-Sensitive Field-Effect Transistors (ISFETs) function as pH sensors. Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) has been investigated as a potential sensing material for ISFET sensors, however Metal Oxides have historically been the material of choice for the gate-sensing layer because of its stability and dependability. ISFET sensors using rGO as the sensing material and those with traditional Metal Oxide gate layers were thoroughly compared. The performance of the sensors was assessed under a range of operating situations by multiphysics modeling with finite element methods using COMSOL Multiphysics software. The results showed a considerable improvement in sensor performance when rGO was used as the gate-sensing layer. A lower threshold voltage needed to activate the sensor and a higher sensitivity to pH variations were two of these enhancements. In ISFET sensors for pH monitoring, this work emphasizes the benefits of adopting alternate gate materials, such rGO. For the purpose of creating more dependable and efficientpH-sensing instruments for a range of scientific and industrial applications, it is helpful to analyze the fundamental mechanics and performance characteristics of sensors.

Rapid development in vehicular technology has caused more automated vehicle control to increase on the roads. Studies showed that driving in mixed traffic with an autonomous vehicle (AV) had a negative impact on the time headway (THW) of conventional vehicles (CVs) (i.e., driven by humans). To address this issue, there is a need to equip CV with visual advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs) that helps the driver maintain safe headway when driving near AVs. This study examines the perception of drivers using visual ADAS and their associated risk while driving behind the AV at constant and varying speeds. The preliminary results showed that while visual ADAS could help drivers keep the safe THW, it could affect drivers' ability to react to emergencies. This implies that visual modality alone might not be sufficient and therefore requires some other feedback or intelligent transport systems to help drivers maintain safe driving in a mixed-Traffic condition. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. A paragraph raises pertinent issues about linguistic disparities in understanding the semantic relationships between sentences within the natural language processing domain (NLP) Addressing this challenge necessitates the development of robust NLP models, with a specific emphasis on text entailment. This research endeavors to enhance the performance of Indonesian NLP benchmarks in text entailment by harnessing a variant of the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformer (BERT) model tailored explicitly for the Indonesian language, known as IndoBERT. The approach in this study adopts a hybrid methodology, amalgamating the IndoBERT layer modification model by summing the last four hidden layers with neural networks. The performance evaluation of the hybrid models, combining the IndoBERT layer modification model with the Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BiGRU) model and the IndoBERT layer modification model with the Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) model, yields the F1-scores of 0.87 and 0.84, respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

Infrastructures such as bridges are ubiquitous in today's world, but over time, corrosion, continuous vibrations, heavy loads, natural disasters, and aging have actively weakened their structural integrity. Hence, it is crucial to periodically assess the bridge's condition to maintain its structural soundness. Nevertheless, conventional bridge inspection techniques involve inspectors to visually assess a bridge's condition and manually capture images of its defects. UAVs for bridge inspections typically improve the conventional approach. This method provides a visual system by mounting a camera on the UAV equipped with a software application dedicated to data acquisition. However, the application operates primarily on desktop computers or laptops while incompatible with smartphones and tablets, limiting its portability and making it inconvenient for inspectors. In this study, the researchers developed an application for mobile devices to further improve data acquisition. The application is designed to display a real-time video feed from the shelled UAV, capture visual data of bridge defects, and allow users to review the data after the inspection. The researchers tested and evaluated the application's performance regarding its functionality. Results show that the application has successfully improved the portability and efficiency of the inspection process, achieving its intended features and functionalities while adhering to the requirements.

Nonreciprocal coupling in space-time modulated systems at exceptional points

Exceptional points (EPs) are critical points in the parameter space of non-Hermitian systems, where two or more eigenvalues and eigenvectors simultaneously coalesce. The remarkable physics and behavior of waves at these EPs have raised considerable attention. Previous research has accessed EPs in parity-time (PT) symmetric systems through spatially modulated parameters. Using acoustics, this Letter demonstrates a different family of EPs in classical wave systems that emerge from coordinated modulation of mass density and loss/gain in time. This condition can create nonreciprocal coupling between arbitrary modes at the EPs, leading to exotic behaviors such as unilateral frequency conversion and linear amplification of waves that are unattainable at conventional time-invariant systems. Moreover, these phenomena can be attained with only loss, and acoustic gain via modal energy transfer is demonstrated in a loss-only system at such EPs. Our work marries time-varying systems with EPs, which could open new avenues for wave manipulation.
