The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.

The Influence of Parent-child Toys and Time of Playing Together on Attachment

As grandparent rearing is growing year by year in Taiwan's dual-earner family, it raises a critical issue (how parents can efficiently accompany with their children. The study investigates in the influences of parent-child toys and time of playing together on attachment. The study is divided into two parts. (1) Literature Review. The relationship between playing together as a family and theory of attachment. (2) Questionnaire Analysis. The questionnaire focuses on the influences of different types of parent-child toys and the time of playing together for age 2-6 kids on attachment. Choosing 20 questions from attachment Q-set, preschool education specialists design this questionnaire. Questionnaires are distributed in December 2014, and 30 of them are collected. Results are as follows. (1) Instead of whole day as we imaging, the average time of playing together is 15 minutes each time, resulting in high level of attachment. (2) Symbolic play materials. Children play stuffed toys, dolls, and toys alone make them feel secured even if not playing together with parents. (3) Fluid-construction play materials. Playing dough or drawing pictures with children for 15-45 minutes not only enhances parent-child attachment but also makes children trust people easily and fearless of many things. (4) Structured-construction play material. Play building block, Lego, puzzle with children helps and encourages them to explore learning. In the security attachment, it will inspire children to develop positive attitudes. (5) Sensori-motor play materials. Accompanying with children for playing sliding slide and climbing-frame for 1 hour generates high level of attachment, making them not fear of unfamiliar environment. (6) Sign play-numbers and letters. Playing educational toys together for 60 minutes trains children to think and judge, allowing them to quickly adapt to changeable environment. © 2015 The Authors

Hines College of Architecture and Design University of Houston in 2003 and added a new graduate program in 2013. Kwon made DesignIntelligence's 25 Most Admired Educators in 2011 as well as its list of 30 Most Admired Educators for 2015 in architecture industrial design and interior design recognized by “her insight to nurture and grow the program with her vision and passion.” She holds a BFA in industrial design from Seoul National University and two masters degrees—one in industrial design from Seoul National University (MFA) and the other from The Ohio State University (MA)—as well as a PhD in arts education from the The Ohio State University. She was appointed director general of Seoul Design Olympiad 2008 and has served as juror for many international design competitions.

Thoughts on design, national character, education, and the future from a native Korean who has been a student and a professor in the United States and in her home country.

BACKGROUND:In response to supply shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs or "masks"), which are typically single-use devices in healthcare settings, are routinely being used for prolonged periods and in some cases decontaminated under "reuse" and "extended use" policies. However, the reusability of N95 masks is limited by degradation of fit. Possible substitutes, such as KN95 masks meeting Chinese standards, frequently fail fit testing even when new. The purpose of this study was to develop an inexpensive frame for damaged and poorly fitting masks using readily available materials and 3D printing. RESULTS:An iterative design process yielded a mask frame consisting of two 3D printed side pieces, malleable wire links that users press against their face, and cut lengths of elastic material that go around the head to hold the frame and mask in place. Volunteers (n = 45; average BMI = 25.4), underwent qualitative fit testing with and without mask frames wearing one or more of four different brands of FFRs conforming to US N95 or Chinese KN95 standards. Masks passed qualitative fit testing in the absence of a frame at rates varying from 48 to 94 % (depending on mask model). For individuals who underwent testing using respirators with broken or defective straps, 80-100 % (average 85 %) passed fit testing with mask frames. Among individuals who failed fit testing with a KN95, ~ 50 % passed testing by using a frame. CONCLUSIONS:Our study suggests that mask frames can prolong the lifespan of N95 and KN95 masks by serving as a substitute for broken or defective bands without adversely affecting fit. Use of frames made it possible for ~ 73 % of the test population to achieve a good fit based on qualitative and quantitative testing criteria, approaching the 85-90 % success rate observed for intact N95 masks. In this study, using a new high volume blast furnace slag cement type C developed in order to improve the effect of inhibition of thermal crack in concrete and the resistance of thermal crack by means of expansion strain in early age obtained by appropriately selecting the dosage of gypsum and calcium carbonate, experiments to evaluate the material were carried out using the testing device in which it was possible to simulate the behavior of thermal stress inside the member in existing structure in the laboratory in order to evaluate the resistance of cracking of concrete. As the result, it was confirmed to have the resistance of crack in which concrete used the new high volume blast furnace slag cement type C was more superior to concrete using Ordinary Portland cement and Portland blast furnace slag type B on the cracking time and stress at cracking. Furthermore, it was also confirmed to the effect of stress relaxation caused by creep in which concrete used the new high volume blast furnace slag cement type C was more superior to the above concrete. © 2016 International Committee of the SCMT conferences. This paper proposes a method for detecting and tracking pedestrians, which is an important function for preventing the collision of autonomously moving mobile robots with a pedestrian. To observe the pedestrian, we use two types of laser range scanners: one scans a 2D plane (2D scanner) and the other scans a 3D space, such as a 3D scanner. We scan 3D space with a 2D scanner fixed on the turning mechanism, instead of a 3D scanner, because 3D scanners are more expensive than 2D scanners. The 3D space is divided into voxels to determine whether a pedestrian exists. This detection system is robust to occlusion because turning 3D scanner can detect a pedestrian based on the shape of the data points. However, the scanning span of the turning 3D scanner depends on the period of the turning mechanism; thus, we combine the detected pedestrian's position with the data scanned by the normal 2D scanner because it is possible for a 2D scanner to track objects moving in real time according to the positional transition of the data points. To investigate the efficiency of the proposed method for pedestrian detection, which is robust to occlusion and exhibits real-time tracking using reasonable scanning devices, we experiment with our prototype.

In this paper, a method for further reducing computation time for Fast Look-Ahead Rao-Blackwellized Particle filtering (Fast la-RBPF) for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problem is presented. By using the pose posterior probability, states with low posteriors are excluded from the Kalman filtering updates to the computation time can be reduced. In conjunction with Fast la-RBPF, the proposed algorithm is then called the Posterior Elimination Fast la-RBPF SLAM algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed method is more efficient in terms of computation time than Fast la-RBPF without any sacrifice in both localization and mapping error performances.

Technology advances in computer simulation such as auralization has brought a new perspective in acoustic research. The possibility to simulate a space, play a sound source and listen to the result made possible to open new frontiers on subjective evaluation of acoustics environments. As part of a PhD in Architecture, focused in acoustics, this paper intends to investigate the feasibility of using auralization to study the threshold of perception of spatialization, specifically regarding early reflections. A research on the subject made by Barron and Marshall in the 80's was virtually reproduced with the addition of different sound sources such as solo voice, solo cello and two orchestra samples in order to investigate if sound source would have an influence on threshold perception. An anechoic chamber with speakers reproducing direct sound and early reflections at different delays was simulated on software EASE 4.3 from AFMG. A jury analyzed auralized sounds of the different sound sources. Results showed a good correlation with Barron and Marshall's research and that the type of sound source did not make a difference on the threshold perception. It also showed that auralization is a valuable tool for the research of threshold perception and possibly for just noticeable difference perception. © 2015 by ASME.
