This paper suggests a method of robust control for an active suspension to improve both of the ride comfort and the driving stability using half car model. The ride comfort is evaluated by the vertical acceleration and the pitch acceleration of the human body. The driving stability is evaluated by the vertical force of front and rear wheels. The purpose of this paper is to improve the ride comfort and the driving stability by using state feedback. On the other hand, the robust stability is also important factor to evaluate the performance of the car. In this study, the front and rear weights of car body are considered as uncertain parameters depending on the passengers and the loads. Their weights influence on the pitch motion of the car body. The robust H_2 controller is designed to guarantee the robust stability for the system with uncertain parameters with polytopic representation. These problems are solved by a finite set of Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI). The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by simulations and experiments.

An active orthosis （AO） is a robotic device that assists both human gait and rehabilitation therapy. This work proposes portable AOs, one for the knee joint and another for the ankle joint. Both AOs will be used to complete a robotic system that improves gait rehabilitation. The requirements for actuator selection, the biomechanical considerations during the AO design, the finite element method, and a control approach based on electroencepha-lographic and surface electromyographic signals are reviewed. This work contributes to the design of AOs for users with foot drop and knee flexion impairment. However, the potential of the proposed AOs to be part of a robotic gait rehabilitation system that improves the quality of life of stroke survivors requires further investigation.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a standard comfort features presented on the consideration of the traditional houses, called Hanok in Korea. In addition, this paper is to build a diversified, integrated evaluation system considering traditional, aesthetic and psychological values. For this study, the degree of integrative comfort was analyzed and comfort performance has been classified. Comfort performance was divided into two large comfort performance categories: physical and psychological. For this research, survey data from residents were collected for evaluating psychological comfort. Existing relevant studies about comfort evaluation system were driven to reveal the quantitative comfort elements of the suggested classification system. This study also contains a qualitative in-depth analysis of the comfort factor and will examine the effect of those elements. This study has finally proposed an integrated comfort evaluation system that can evaluate over inhabitants of the interior environmental conditions and surveys. As a result, the proposed system will have to be turned on quite good applicability in the field.

This paper aims to present a framework for collaborative design environments during the manipulation of multimedia content. The proposed desktop system can be assumed as an imitation of physical desktop including three additional properties: a tangible timeline layer, a projection of 2D plan and 3D perspective views which can be controlled through specified augmented reality markers. The potentials of this desktop application, such as unfoldable experience of time via a timeline, multi-touch manipulation and organisation of 2D and 3D visual data, were explored for the further augmented reality studies. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Colorimetry based point-of-care diagnostics provide an inexpensive technique for healthcare and environmental monitoring during disaster relief operations. Conventional equipments for measuring colorimetric assays are bulky and expensive, making them unsuitable for usage in low-resource settings. This paper proposes a novel approach for taking colorimetric measurements using a miniaturized spectrophotometer prototype attached to a smartphone. The proposed frugal design is portable, easy-to-use and costs less than US$15. High dynamic range imaging is used to process the spectrums captured by smartphone camera. The proposed algorithm supports JPEG image format, allowing the prototype to be used with a wide variety of smartphone models. In the experimental study, spectrums of color dye and milk samples are imaged. Spectrums obtained are found to be well correlated with the sample color and concentration. By providing accurate and fast measurements, smartphone spectrophotometry enables effective application of colorimetric diagnostic techniques in low-resource settings.

In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (CCI-ILSTC) with emphasis on developing viable Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies aimed at selling Gansu produce in four Southeast Asian markets. We share how the course was designed to support the attainment of key learning goals and discuss how we turned pedagogical aspirations into concrete learning outcomes. We introduce key aspects of the so-called “SMU-XO” project that the students conducted in partnership with an industry partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL), and discuss how the project work helped learners to gain global competency by (i) examining critical issues related to BRI such as multi-modal infrastructure connectivity, (ii) appreciating the local perspectives of project stakeholders in Lanzhou and Shanghai and (iii) successfully interacting with people from different cultures, namely China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

This paper proposes a novel driving assistance system for a manual wheelchair. On an inclined road, there is a high risk of a wheelchair moving in a direction that the user does not intend. Using only servo brakes on each wheel, our proposed system negates the wheel traction that is generated by the road's inclination. Our system measures the road's inclination and estimates the wheel traction generated by gravitational force. Our system then cancels this traction and the user can drive the wheelchair as they would on flat ground. The system is intuitive because the user drives the wheelchair in the usual manner, and our assistance system works passively to complement the user's intentional force. Our system uses only servo brakes that can generate the various required levels of brake traction. Our system does not require actuators, and its mechanism is simple and inexpensive. There is no risk of malfunction of servomotors. We verified the effectiveness of our proposed assistance system by conducting experiments with a prototype.

Active vibration control has been widely investigated in civil engineering. This study considers the problem of selecting a norm for an evaluation criterion for the planning of the placement of active damping devices (ADDs) in a structure in active vibration control. Using a 4-degree-of-freedom system as an example, we compare the commonly used 2-norm and ∞-norm, and show that the 2-norm is a suitable choice for the performance index of the placement planning of ADDs.

This paper describes an automated method for segmenting color images based on a modified stochastic region merging strategy with multi-scale spatial constraints. First, a bilateral decomposition is performed, and an over-segmentation process is then performed based multichannel information and multi-scale gradients. Next, each sub-region is represented using a normalized color histogram in the CIE L*a*b* color space, and a region adjacency graph is constructed based on the over-segmentation results. Finally, a stochastic region merging strategy with spatial constraints is performed on the region adjacency graph to construct one segmentation map for each scale of representation. Our preliminary visual and quantitative experimental results on the Berkeley image database (BSDS500) are encouraging, and suggest that our proposed approach can provide accurate segmentation results.
