Fortenberry ScD: is Executive Director of the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Science and Engineering Inc. (GEM). GEM is a $4.2-million enterprise with offices in three states and a staff of 13. He is also an adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Fortenberry received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has worked in industry government and the academy. Prior to joining GEM he was Staff Associate and a program director (engineering) in the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) of the National Science Foundation. Before joining NSF he was an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and associate director of minority engineering programs at the Florida A&M University/Florida State University College of Engineering in Tallahassee Florida. 作者: FAIRHEAD, DL HALL, CC Since graduating from Cleveland State University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics he has worked for the Navy at Annapolis participating in several different automation efforts ranging from design aids to surface ship bridge control. Mr. Fairhead has completed graduate work in Computer Science at the University of Maryland has a certificate in Computer Programming holds a patent and is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Upon graduation from Morgan State in 1962 Mr. Hall was employed as a physicist at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division Annapolis until 1994. During that time period he served as program technical manager for propulsion technology and as senior project scientist for several automation projects including the Automated Ships Bridge project. Mr. Hall also served as a member of the initial Technical Director's Technology Application Team and of the Autonomic Ship Innovation Center Team. Mr. Hall is a member of the American Institute of Physics and Sigma Pi Sigma (National Physics Honor Society).

Stuchly, M.A. University of Victoria Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Victoria Victoria British Columbia Canada Janet McCulloch:is a native of Toronto Canada where she briefly attended both York University and the University of Toronto before she set off on a year-long adventure through the Middle East and North Africa. When she returned to Canada she relocated to California. She spent a number of years living both in Los Angeles and coastal Northern California interspersed with several extended trips through the United States Mexico and Central America. Ms. McCulloch moved to Victoria British Columbia in 1989 and a year later registered in the cooperative education program in Electrical Engineering at the University of Victoria. She is presently in the fifth and final year of the program and has her sights set on graduate school. Besides the work described in this article she has been very much involved in the use of technology to assist in the delivery of curriculum at the senior secondary level. She lives on a country property a half-hour from the University with her husband her horse and three cats. W. Alfred Keddy:is an applications programmer/analyst for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria. He received a BEng (1988) in Electrical Engineering and an MASc (1994) from the University of Victoria. 作者: JONS, OP RYAN, JC JONES, GW Otto P. Jons:received a Diplom Ing. in shipbuilding from the Technical University of Hanover W. Germany and an MS in naval architecture and marine engineering from MIT. He then joined Litton Ship Systems where he was responsible for the preliminary design of the DD-963 hull structure and then for ship system integration as manager LHA ship systems engineering department. From 1972 to 1974 he was the principal research scientist at Hydronautics. In 1974 as technical director he helped establish the Crystal City office of Designers and Planners. Mr. Jons was one of the co-founders of Advanced Marine Enterprises Inc. in 1976 where he serves as corporate vice president engineering. J. Christopher Ryan:earned his bachelors and masters degrees in naval architecture from Webb Institute and MIT respectively. He spent three years at the advanced marine technology division of Litton Industries working on the DD-963 class ship design and related computer aided design projects. He subsequently went to the Navy Department concentrating on early stage design of surface combatants for twelve years including work on the FFG-7 Sea Control Ship CSGN and CVV aircraft carrier projects. He then shifted focus and became the Technical Director for the Computer Supported Design Program in NavSea for five years. Mr. Ryan has served in several supervisory positions within the Ship Design Group in NavSea since that time. He is currently the director of the future ship concepts division. Gary W. Jones:graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1971 with a BS in mechanical engineering and followed up with graduate work at George Washington University and the University of Maryland. Mr. Jones was with the Naval Sea Systems Command from 1971 until 1988 where he was a naval architect in the submarine section of the hull form design division. ILI receives the largest number of proposals (over 2200) of any program at the Foundation and has a budget of $23 million. 作者: PHINNEY, JM The Author:is the senior application specialist for the enclosed drive group of the Philadelphia Gear Corporation where his responsibilities include conceptual design and quotation of sophisticated equipment in the marine propulsion special products industrial gear products and high speed products areas. Prior to joining Philadelphia Gear Mr. Phinney's career included positions as Engineering Supervisor at Newport News Shipbuilding Director of Product Engineering for SKF Industries Manager of Engineering for Propulsion Systems Inc and Chief of Design Engineering for High Speed and Marine Drives at the Falk Corporation. The scope of his marine experience includes management design of propulsion equipment and logistic support for military and commercial vessels ranging from fishing vessels to aircraft carriers. Mr. Phinney is a graduate of Antioch College earning his BSME in 1963. A member of ASNE since 1985 Mr. Phinney is a past member of the National Council representing the mid-Atlantic region. He is active in the Delaware Valley Section where he heads the Awards Committee and previously served as the section Chairman Vice Chairman and Program Committee head. He has also been active in other engineering societies with several papers to his credit.

He joined what is now the NavSea SEA 03D organization in 1967 in the Submarine Preliminary Design Group. He has held positions on a variety of programs including Trident AO-177 and RSNF PCG and was the head of the Auxiliary Ship Preliminary Design Section. Prior to becoming theSea Shadowdeputy program manager in 1985 he was the ship design manager for the T-AGOS 19. He assumed his current position asSea Shadowprogram manager in 1991. Richard G. Paquette:received a BSE degree in mechanical/electrical engineering from General Motors Institute in 1972 and an MS in naval architecture and marine engineering from the University of Michigan in 1977. From 1967 through 1976 he held a variety of engineering and management positions at General Motors primarily in the plant engineering and noise control areas. After graduate school he spent a year at Ingalls Shipbuilding performing engineering for nuclear submarine overhauls. Since 1978 he has worked for Lockheed Missiles & Space Co. in a variety of technical and management assignments on advanced ship and subsurface programs. He was chief engineer during the original construction and operation of theSea Shadowand returned as the Lockheed Program manager for the current efforts. 作者: BALL, RE CALVANO, CN Robert E. Ball:attended Northwestern University where he received BS and MS degrees in civil engineering in 1958 and 1959 and a Ph.D. in structural mechanics in 1962. From 1962 to 1967 he worked in the aerospace industry. In 1967 he joined the faculty of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Monterey Ca. and is currently a professor in the department of aeronautics and astronautics. In 1976 Dr. Ball began developing an educational program in aircraft combat survivability at NPS. Approximately 3500 Navy Marine Army and Air Force officers DoD civilians and civilians from the US aircraft industry attended his NPS graduate level and short courses since 1977. He has conducted short courses for NATO and the governments of Canada and Greece. He has also developed similar graduate level courses at NPS in air defense lethality and surface ship combat survivability. He has conducted an extensive research program in survivability and lethality at NPS directing over 110 theses and in 1985 his 400 page textbook The Fundamentals of Aircraft Combat Survivability Analysis and Designwas published by AIAA. He is a Fellow of AIAA. Charles N. Calvano:is a 1963 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a 1970 graduate of MIT with an MS in ocean engineering and a naval engineer's degree. His active duty Navy career spanned twenty-eight years culminating in assignments in the Naval Sea Systems Command as the director of the ship design group and as the director for ship concepts and technology. He joined the faculty of the Naval Postgraduate School in October 1991 and is developing and teaching the total ship systems engineering curriculum discussed in this paper. He is a member of ASNE and of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
