Pitch-type wave energy converters (e.g., Salter’s duck-type wave energy converter [WEC] rotor) have been proven to work effectively in 2D. However, only a few studies have investigated the 3D nonlinear effects. Large motions, wave breaking, slamming, and 3D crossflows are factors that cannot be overlooked and have a direct effect on the absorbed power, thereby necessitating the use of nonlinear numerical models. This study addresses the interaction between the wave and WEC rotor by using a weakly nonlinear model (based on potential flow theory) and a fully nonlinear model (based on computational fluid dynamics). The weakly nonlinear model is formulated by incorporating the nonlinear restoring moment and Coulomb type of power take-off (PTO) load torque. It is compared with fully nonlinear simulations and validated using experimental results. Results show that in regular waves with a wave steepness (H/λ) of 0.03, the weakly nonlinear model agrees well with the fully nonlinear model, except in the long range of one-way PTO load torque where deviations are observed. These differences are amplified with the increase in wave steepness and PTO load torque due to the strong nonlinear effects, thereby limiting the applicability of the weakly nonlinear model to H/λ = 0.03. © 2023, The Authors. With the recent rapid development of the Internet of Vehicles and autonomous driving technology, the demand for digital vehicle identification has also increased. Coupled with the gradual maturity of quantum technology, the Internet of Vehicles, which mainly uses wireless communication technology for data transmission, will face the threat of quantum computing and privacy issues. This research proposes the Vehicle Forensics Cloud System (VFCS), a framework combining post-quantum cryptography and blockchain technology to address these issues and provide a comprehensive solution for vehicle digital forensics. © 2024 IEEE.

Metaverse provides embodied artificial-reality experience to the users in the virtual spaces. Many innovative and creative services such as virtual conference and tourism have been realized in the digital twins maintained by the virtual service providers (VSP) in Metaverse. Digital twins are digital copies of the physical world constructed virtually by the VSPs using real-world data. For a realistic experience, VSPs need to collect data that is up-to-date and relevant to their services. In this paper, we propose an incentive design framework to support the data trading between VSPs and edge devices. In the auction model, we model the valuation of data by considering data relatedness and data freshness. In our model, the semantic communication model is used to filter the relevant data, and the age of information (AoI) metric is used to assess the data freshness. Results show that by considering the data freshness, our mechanism helps to increase the average update frequency so that the VSPs obtain fresh data for construction of digital twins. Our model ensures the desired properties of individual rationality, incentive compatibility, and budget balance.

The objective of this paper is to identify the stresses placed on the musculoskeletal system when small dogs walk on floors with low friction coefficients. In many households, and small dogs in particular are often kept indoors. According to veterinary experience, it is known that small dogs kept indoors that walk with their lower limbs slipping cause a great deal of stress on the musculoskeletal system, and that the incidence of joint disease in the lower limbs of such small dogs is high. In this study, we measured the body movements of small dogs walking on slippery floors using a three-dimensional motion capture system and force plate system. Furthermore, by inputting these measurements into the musculoskeletal simulation model we have developed to simulate the musculoskeletal system of dogs, we derived the load on the musculoskeletal system of small dogs on slippery and non-slippery floors. As a result, it was identified that walking on a slippery floor causes a strong load on the lower limb muscles of small dogs. © 2025 IEEE.

Using computational design tools to create meaningful digital representations of architectural heritage delivers both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, digital tools aid the fast and detailed three-dimensional modeling of architectural elements. On the other hand, these models do not sufficiently document the materials and techniques of making. This research proposes a workflow to use computational design tools to analyze historic Anatolian brick elements while integrating their geometry, construction, and part-whole relations in parametric modeling and robotic fabrication processes. Our approach demonstrates a correlation between the design of the surface pattern and material application in historical bricklaying. The proposed workflow can be applied to formalize implicit design knowledge, integrating it into the digital environment and numeric control production codes. This holistic approach to heritage prioritizes both the tangible aspects, such as form and material, and intangible aspects such as the knowledge base of applied techniques. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Systemic evaluation of spatio-temporal variations in travel time reliability due to a toll road over time

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of toll roads in reducing congestion and improving travel time reliability on streets within its vicinity, over time. The data, from the year 2013 to 2017, for the Triangle Expressway in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina was used in the systemic evaluation process. The spatial and temporal variations in the travel time distributions on the toll road, parallel route, and near-vicinity cross-streets (in a 2-mile buffer) were evaluated. The average travel time (ATT), the 95th percentile travel time (or planning time, PT), the buffer time (BT), and the buffer time index (BTI) were computed for each link by the day-of-the-week and the time-of-the-day. Though there was an improvement in travel time after the speed limit change in the year 2014, the travel time reliability got reduced on the Triangle Expressway. Over time, there was a gradual improvement in BT and BTI. The parallel route reliability decreased significantly over time, whereas the travel time reliability of cross-streets showed a consistent trend. The stabilization of travel time distributions and the reliability measures in the year 2017 indicate that further reduction in performance measures may not be expected in the next few years on the near-vicinity links. © 2020 The Author(s). Preliminary Exploration on the Application of Saussure Sign Concept in Bio-Inspired design: A Case of Tiantoushui Doll-design

Simply, shape bionics is to extract an image feature of natural objects, and most of the techniques for transforming and presenting are focused on metaphorical effects. In particular, the extraction process of metaphor design seems to be related to the concept of Saussure signs. Therefore, this research took the doll design of the Tiantoushui community in Changhua County, Taiwan as an example and attempted to use the Saussure concept to extract and evaluate the signs of bio-inspired design. The results showed that a total of three doll works symbolized respectively rice, guava, and pomelo implied the signification of local region by integrating the Saussure code image with the sign-image of the regional nature and transforming its content into “commodity design” and further transferring into “the product value of cultural and creative”. In addition, the specific extraction process included 1) Extraction of image—adjectives in creative products;2) Meaning space of image—adjec- tives in creative products;3) Extraction and determination of design elements of creative products, and 4) Combined the sensibility of creative products and design elements to derive design rules. After preliminary exploration of the extraction steps above, a concrete and efficient bio-inspired design process was proposed in this work. Besides, it was inferred that if further combined with the post-modern design style, it may not only simplify the design elements of creative products but also enhance the design connotations in the future.

The design of enzymes with complex active sites that mediate multistep reactions remains an outstanding challenge. With serine hydrolases as a model system, we combined the generative capabilities of RFdiffusion with an ensemble generation method for assessing active site preorganization at each step in the reaction to design enzymes starting from minimal active site descriptions. Experimental characterization revealed catalytic efficiencies (kcat/Km) up to 2.2 × 105 M-1 s-1 and crystal structures that closely match the design models (Cα root mean square deviations <1 angstrom). Selection for structural compatibility across the reaction coordinate enabled identification of new catalysts remove with five different folds distinct from those of natural serine hydrolases. Our de novo approach provides insight into the geometric basis of catalysis and a roadmap for designing enzymes that catalyze multistep transformations.

In recent years, with the increase in the number of dogs, paralysis of the lower limbs due to herniated discs in dogs has become a problem. There is no fundamental cure for this condition, and the main treatment is physical therapy. Usually, these dogs need physical therapy with a physical therapist every day, but it's not realistic. Therefore, it is required that the owner be effective rehabilitation at home. However, quantitative evaluation methods have not been established for physiotherapy because physiotherapy is performed by veterinarians based on their experience. In this paper, we proposes a musculoskeletal model of the dog's lower limb to analyze the dynamics of rehabilitation movements and confirm its validity by comparing the muscular activity obtained from the model with the measured EMG data. Using proposed model, we performed a simulation experiment to discuss the relationship between the timing of the input force and muscular activity by changing the timing of the input force. From the data obtained in the experiment, we investigated the relationship between the timing of the input force and the muscular activity and clarify how to input a support force for the physical therapy. © 2023 IEEE.

The popularity of Metaverse as an entertainment, social, and work platform has led to a great need for seamless avatar integration in the virtual world. In Metaverse, avatars must be updated and rendered to reflect users' behaviour. Achieving real-time synchronization between the virtual bilocation and the user is complex, placing high demands on the Metaverse Service Provider (MSP)'s rendering resource allocation scheme. To tackle this issue, we propose a semantic communication framework that leverages contest theory to model the interactions between users and MSPs and determine optimal resource allocation for each user. To reduce the consumption of network resources in wireless transmission, we use the semantic communication technique to reduce the amount of data to be transmitted. Under our simulation settings, the encoded semantic data only contains 51 bytes of skeleton coordinates instead of the image size of 8.243 megabytes. Moreover, we implement Deep Q-Network to optimize reward settings for maximum performance and efficient resource allocation. With the optimal reward setting, users are incentivized to select their respective suitable uploading frequency, reducing down-sampling loss due to rendering resource constraints by 66.076% compared with the traditional average distribution method. The framework provides a novel solution to resource allocation for avatar association in VR environments, ensuring a smooth and immersive experience for all users.
