Land tenure for Indigenous peoples and local communities in forested areas can improve livelihoods and protect forests while recognizing territorial and human rights. Yet little is known about the relationship between land tenure and deforestation within Quilombola territories (QTs) of Afro-descendant populations in Brazil. Understanding these relationships is important given that only 176 of the more than 5,900 QTs have been recognized with legal land tenure rights throughout Brazil. In this study, we conducted a difference-in-differences analysis to estimate the average treatment effect of land tenure on rates of deforestation, reforestation, and net forest cover change from 1985 to 2020 in 313 QTs across all of Brazil as well as 104 more specifically in the Brazilian Amazon and 81 in the Atlantic Forest biome. We additionally tested changes in forest outcomes before and after an earlier stage of the tenure process (incomplete tenure). We found no evidence that formalized land tenure had influenced forest outcomes in QTs. As the first rigorous analysis of the effect of formalized tenure specifically in QTs, our study also reveals several primary knowledge and data gaps relating to Quilombolas. We emphasize the need for much more data to be systematically collected and disseminated on QTs, as well as the need for more research to be conducted to fully understand how tenure influences forest cover in QTs. We highlight that there are considerable opportunities to improve the state of research and understanding about rights, tenure, and forest conservation among Quilombolas, as an important but largely-overlooked (in terms of research) category of traditional peoples in Brazil. We additionally contribute to a growing body of literature on the role of rights-based approaches to conservation. © 2025 The Authors

This study aims to find out and explore information on cattle farmers in utilizing their dung as alternative energy-biogas in their daily activities. By using quantitative descriptive research methods and Likert scale for data analysis on 50 respondents, resulting that as many as 46% of respondents agreed that biogas as an alternative energy and want to have it as much as 54%. However, in the statement that they will build biogas, most of them answered doubtfully, which is 70%. Doubts in building biogas are caused by, among others: the lack of sufficient information related to biogas, the high investment costs at the beginning of the biogas reactor construction, the are several biogas digesters do not work, the useful life and function of the biogas reactor, and the availability of land as a biogas reactor. As a solution to these problems, IEC program (Information, Education and Communication) can be done to the community, especially farmers about biogas as a whole;program synergies among the government, academics and biogas builders to encourage biogas development as an alternative energy while enhancing environmental quality. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In response to the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030, Portugal is updating its conservation plans to expand the coverage of existing conservation areas from 22 % to 30 %. This expansion is also required to accommodate biodiversity adaptation needs amid climate change. To this end, we have developed a protocol that employs biological data, species distribution models, and optimization techniques within a systematic conservation planning framework, to guide the expansion of conservation areas while considering the needs of species adaptation under climate change. The protocol formulates scenarios considering three species' conservation targets and two climate scenarios. It identifies potential range retention refugia, where species may continue to persist, and range displacement refugia, where species might be forced to redistribute due to changing climatic conditions. Using terrestrial vertebrates as a test case, two regions emerge as critical for species conservation through the 21st century: the central-western region along the Atlantic coast, projected as future displacement refugia, and the northeastern upland region, serving both as range retention and displacement refugia. Additional smaller areas are identified mainly across mountains and coastal areas of the country. Importantly, existing conservation areas already encompass high concentrations of species in range retention refugia, preserving nearly double the species richness found in non-conserved areas. The proposed approach ensures that conservation expansion is both scientifically sound and effectively contributes to the biodiversity goals of 2030, representing a significant improvement over traditional approaches that rely on bottom-up expert judgment and administrative expediency. © 2025 The Authors

Urban parks are of great importance for the sustainability in the cities. The multiple influences that the parks and green spaces offer both to humans and to the environment have been widely recognized in the literature and include the physical and mental health of citizens. The urban parks are oxygen sources for cities, they make people feel close to nature, they contribute to the reduction of anxiety and they also offer many activities to the people. The impact of green spaces is of vital importance as they contribute to the reduction of temperature and they offer a cool environment improving the microclimate this way. The purpose of this study is to estimate the value that people attribute to urban parks applying the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). This value is estimated through urban park visitors' willingness to pay a hypothetical entrance ticket. For the purpose of our study, a survey was conducted to visitors of the Niarchos Park in Attica, Greece from July of 2018 to February of 2019. Subsequently, the empirical analysis is based on regression models. The demographic characteristics, such as the age, the educational level, the employment and the number of household members were found to be significant prognostic factors for people's willingness to pay or not in order to use the park, as also the importance that people give to green spaces. The visitors' expenses for the park visit were also taken into consideration and they are statistically important. The differentiation that may exist between a hypothetical scenario which is presented to the park's visitors and of a real situation should be taken into account. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Stakeholders have increasingly demanded the adoption of sustainable strategies and the increase in sustainability reports from the business. At the same time, the assessment and measurement of corporate performance now extend beyond its established financial return. This paper follows the argument that it is important for companies to be an entity that plays an active role in sustainable development. However, it is commonly accepted that there is no single, integrated way of assessing this performance. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework for understanding and measuring corporate sustainability in the banking sector. More specifically, the paper aims to fill the gap in the corporate sustainability assessment in the banking sector because there is, in fact, a tendency to underestimate the indirect impact these sectors have on environmental issues and social responsibility. A theoretical framework of an integrated composite sustainability index is analyzed based on the adoption of the GRI sustainability guidelines and the application of the analytic hierarchy process. The construction of a composite sustainability index includes the economic, environmental and social dimension of entrepreneurship. Each of the three sub-indices is a synthesis of several key performance indicators, which are usually the subjects of annual sustainability reports of an organization. This process is used to benchmark a company over a period of time and provides an indicative tool in order to analyze banking companies. Managers can use this analysis as a valuable component for comparing them over time, so as to adopt appropriate sustainable strategies and to improve the economic, environmental and social performance. A key tool to achieve sustainability in the banking sector is to analyze the corporate performance of the organizations. Studies on Ghana’s solid waste value chain have focused on plastic waste and e-waste with little emphasis on the coconut waste value chain as a potential for sustainable growth. This paper, therefore, focused on exploring the coconut waste value chain in Ghana and its potential to contribute to achieving a circular economy and local economic development. Using both qualitative and qualitative research methods, the study seeks to understand the coconut waste value chain in Ghana and examine its potential to achieve a circular economy and local economic development. It was found that the coconut waste value chain in Ghana has the potential to contribute to achieving a circular economy and provide local economic development at various phases within the value chain despite existing challenges. The paper recommends the enforcement of regulatory frameworks for sustainable coconut waste collection and transportation. It advocates for a strong partnership between local authorities and private entities to promote investment, innovation, and technology for recycling coconut waste. Ocean currents are fundamental drivers of marine biodiversity distribution, mediating the exchange of genetic material and individuals between populations. Their effect ranges from creating barriers that foster isolation to facilitating long-distance dispersal, which is crucial for species expansion and resilience in the face of climate change. Despite the significance of oceanographic connectivity, comprehensive global estimates remain elusive, hindering our understanding of species’ dispersal ecology and limiting the development of effective conservation strategies. We present the first dataset of connectivity estimates (including probability of connectivity and travel time) along the world’s coastlines. The dataset is derived from Lagrangian simulations of passive dispersal driven by 21 years of ocean current data and can be combined with species’ biological traits, including seasonality and duration of planktonic dispersal stages. Alongside, we provide coastalNet, an R package designed to streamline access, analysis, and visualization of connectivity estimates. The dataset provides a new benchmark for research in oceanographic connectivity, enabling a deeper exploration of the complex dynamics of coastal marine ecosystems and informing more effective conservation strategies. © The Author(s) 2025.

Clarification of several issues in the human dimensions of global environmental change is essential to the creation of a balanced research agenda. Global environmental change includes both systemic changes that operate globally through the major systems of the geosphere-biosphere, and cumulative changes that represent the global accumulation of localized changes. An understanding of the human dimen sions of change requires attention to both types through research that integrates findings from spatial scales ranging from the global to the local. A regional or meso-scale focus represents a particularly promising avenue of approach. © 1990.

As a Party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Thailand has to comply and implement at the national level the articles of the Convention as well as the decisions adopted by the Conference of the Parties (COP). At the same time, academic and public sector stakeholders involved in Thailand's implementation of the CBD have experienced low levels of interaction with the private sector. A survey was undertaken to understand the sentiment of the private sector in Thailand towards corporate social responsibility (CSR), the CBD, and public-private partnerships. A total of 36 companies participated, with a response rate equal to or less than 6.58%. Respondents displayed low familiarity with the CBD (35.3%) but a high level of engagement (65.6%) in environmental outreach projects. To better engage the Thai private sector in environmental outreach partnerships, the public sector should consider tailoring engagement requests to focus on those issues which appeal to the business community and those needs where private contributions (e.g., financial, technological, managerial) are most likely to be provided.

Building urban community resilience through university extension: community engagement and the politics of knowledge

Many land-grant universities are examining approaches to community engagement to better align with the US land-grant mission of knowledge democratization. With a growing majority of the United States’ population living in urbanized spaces, it is a societal imperative for university engagement initiatives to devise strategies for engaging people on the complexity of urban issues central to individual and community wellbeing. Effective urban engagement demands collaboration and strong relationships with urban organizations and residents to co-create approaches to urban concerns. Through narrative-based inquiry, we explore urban engagements within Penn State Extension (PSE) across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (USA). PSE, located administratively in the College of Agricultural Sciences, is charged with carrying out Penn State’s land-grant commitment to serve Pennsylvania’s citizens through community engagement and nonformal education in the agricultural and food, human, and social sciences. We examine extension educator and faculty practices, program development, community engagements, and experiences, and those of community stakeholders. This work draws upon democratic methods to uncover the undergirding philosophies of engagement within PSE and how communities experience those engagements. This project offers an entry-point to longer-term applied research to develop a broadly applicable theory and praxis of translational research, engagement, and change privileging urban community resilience. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
