Multiple human activities,like as urbanization,industrialization,and agricultural endeavors,are modifying the land use in Bang Pakong River,Chachoengsao Province,as a result of the rapid population *** land use changes in the province of Chachoengsao have led to the discharge of pollutants into the *** study intends to evaluate the connection between land use changes and water quality in the Bang Pakong River's upstream(US),middle stream(MS),and downstream(DS) *** and statistical analysis were utilized to assess the relationship between land use change and the quality of the Bang Pakong River,including dissolved oxygen,total phosphorus,biological demand oxygen,and *** classification of land use types into five groups included urban land,agriculture,forest,water body,and miscellaneous *** Spearman correlation was utilized to determine the relationship between land use changes and river water *** of water quality revealed a decline in the quality of the BPKR,which flows through the Chachoengsao Province,from 2008 to *** in the land use of water bodies and forests have a positive effect on the water quality of middle and downstream *** land uses identified as important sources of total phosphorus and turbidity contamination in water were reduced in the forest and miscellaneous regions of the BPKR's upstream and middle *** transformation of agricultural land has an adverse effect on the water quality of middle *** results revealed that the conversion of forested land improved water quality,particularly the concentration of dissolved oxygen ***,the findings provide a mechanism for evaluating river water quality,mitigating water pollution,and optimizing land use by utilizing landscape patterns.

Climate change is becoming an increasingly significant issue in Africa, and the need for climate resilience assessment has intensified. Dar es Salam is one of Africa's emerging megacities. With a population of over seven million, which continues to grow, there is an urgent need to understand the city's ability to deal with natural disasters. The Climate Disaster Resilience Index (CDRI) was used in this study to assess the city's ability to withstand and cope with climatic hazards. The Index was quantified using sets of dimensions (social, physical, economic, natural, and institutional), with various parameters indicating the city's abilities, strengths, and vulnerabilities to potential climate-related disasters. Despite being moderately resilient to climate change disasters, the results of our study indicate that the city's economic and institutional features obtained the lowest scores and the least resilience level. The study's findings provide a perspective on aspects of the city management sectors in terms of resilience and which should be given greater consideration in order to strengthen the city's current and future resilience. © 2024 Department of Geography, National University of Singapore and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.

Modeling Community Quality of Life Indicators for Developing Solar Home System in Remote Areas

This paper proposes the modeling indicators of quality of life of those communities in remote areas which received the Solar Home System (SHS) benefit. The questionnaire was designed by survey method using in-depth interview from the professional trainee. The surveyed data was classified using the Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. The target group was classified into three groups, namely the community committee, committee of sub-district and academic persons. The experimental results obtained from four rural villages show that weighted important value of sustainable development indicators are 0.5963, 0.2546 and 0.1491 for the social, economy and environment indicators, respectively. In order to consider on the indicators for communities quality of life of those SHS installation households in remote areas, this result will be applied to design both the questionnaire and constraints in optimization technique for the further research.

During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control Department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Geostatistics as a methodology for studying the spatiotemporal dynamics of Ramularia areola in cotton crops. Geostatistics is a tool that has been used to study plant pathology, by modeling the spatiotemporal pattern of diseases, generating hypotheses about their epidemiological aspects in order to use tactics and strategies of rational control. The objective of this study was to use geostatistics to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of Ramularia areola in cotton crops. The experiment was conducted at the experimental area of Mato Grosso State University-Tangará da Serra campus, and arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design, with randomized blocks, with two spaicngs (0.45 and 0.90 cm) and three conditions of soil coverage (no cover, P. glaucum and C. spectabilis). Geostatistical analysis of data was performed using data from temporal and spatial progress of R. areola, obtained through assessments of the incidence and severity of the disease in plants, and spatial dependence, and analyzed using semivariogram fittings. Through the isotropic exponential semivariogram model, it was possible to check the distribution pattern and spatial dependence of Ramularia leaf spot. Spatial dependence was observed for the disease—moderate to strong for most data evaluated. The pathogen spread from the primary source of inoculum, from the center portion towards the edges, forming foci originating from a source of secondary inoculum.

Consumer Perceptions of the Healthfulness of ‘Ultra-Processed’ Food Products: A Cross-Sectional Study in Vermont

BackgroundRecent research increasingly associates ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption with a range of diet-related diseases, leading to discussions of interventions for reducing UPF consumption. However, little is known regarding consumer perceptions of UPF, including the degree to which consumers prioritize nutrient content relative to degree of processing when evaluating a food's overall healthfulness. ObjectiveTo identify the proportion of adult consumers who have heard of the term “ultra-processed food” in a statewide sample of adults residing in Vermont, and to examine the criteria Vermont consumers prioritize when evaluating a food product's healthfulness. Study Design, Setting, ParticipantsOnline survey collected from 671 Vermont residents in 2022, randomly sampled from a commercially available email list. Survey questions assessed perceptions of UPF and how consumers prioritize nutrient (sugar, fat, sodium) and non-nutrient (ingredients, processing) criteria when assessing the healthfulness of packaged foods. Measurable Outcome/AnalysisDescriptive statistics present perceptions of UPF, the proportion of respondents prioritizing each criterion, and demographic characteristics (age, gender, income, education) of the sample. Associations between variables are compared using chi-squares and logistic regression (p<0.05). ResultsWhen assessing the healthfulness of food products, respondents prioritized levels of added sugar (52.6% of respondents), ingredients (44.4%), and minimal processing (42.8%); and were less concerned with sodium (41.3%) and fat (37.3%) contents. Half of respondents (55%) had previously heard of the term “ultra-processed foods,” and the majority (91%) of those who had heard of UPF were concerned about the levels of UPF in their diets. Nearly a third of respondents (30%) reported making changes to reduce their UPF purchase and consumption patterns, and these respondents were more likely to prioritize minimal processing (OR: 2.99, 95% CI: 2.

Microplastics in wastewater and sludge from centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment plants: Effects of treatment systems and microplastic characteristics

Domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a vital role in limiting the release of microplastics (MP) into the environment. This study examined MP removal efficiency from five centralized and four decentralized domestic WWTPs in Bangkok, Thailand. MP concentrations in wastewater and sludge were comparable between centralized and decentralized WWTPs, despite these decentralized WWTPs serving smaller populations and having limited treatment capacity. The elimination of MPs ranged from 50 to 96.8% in centralized WWTPs and 14.2–53.6% in decentralized WWTPs. It is noted that the retained MPs concentrations in sludge ranged from 20,000 to 228,100 MP/kg dry weight. The prevalence of synthetic fibers and fragments could be attributed to their pathways from laundry or car tires, and the accidental release of a variety of plastic wastes ended up in investigated domestic WWTPs. Removal of MPs between the centralized and decentralized WWTPs was influenced by several impact factors including initial MP concentrations, longer retention times, MP fragmentation, and variations of MP concentrations in sludge leading to different activated sludge process configurations. Sewage sludge has become a primary location for the accumulation of incoming microplastics in WWTPs. The MPs entering and leaving each unit process were varied due to the unique characteristics of MPs, and their different treatment efficiencies. While the extended hydraulic retention period in decentralized WWTPs decreased the MP removal efficacy, the centralized WWTP with the two-stage activated sludge process achieved the highest MP removal efficiency. © 2024 The Authors

Microplastics(MPs)are found worldwide in high abundance,posing a potential threat to *** the ubiquity of MPs in the environment,very little is known about the regional distribution of MPs and underlying factors affecting this distribution in the field,which likely include human activity,but also features of the environment ***,out of a total of 1157 datapoints investigated in 53 Chinese studies,9.68%datapoints were removed as outliers in the heterogeneity *** review revealed that the abundance of MPs was highly *** addition,microplastic(MP)distribution maps based on China demonstrated that the highest abundance of MPs tended to occur near large rivers and central land affected by the intersection of two *** model-fitting and previous studies showed that MP abundance in China was correlated with longitude,agricultural mulching film usage per capita,temperature,and ***,due to the heterogeneity of MPs and the low matching degree between the current environmental data and the sampling points,this pattern was not as evident as reported in any single *** affecting the distribution of MPs can not be captured by linear relationships alone,and systematic selection of suitable environmental factors and further model optimization are needed to explore the cause of MP pollution in ***,this review revealed an uneven distribution of MPs and serves as a reference for model prediction to assess and control plastic pollution in natural soil environments.

In full-scale units, the real application of nanoparticles photocatalytic degradation is still challenging due to the requirement of post separation for recovery of fine particles. This work investigated the removal efficiencies of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) using titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles coupling with graphene oxide (GO) sheets immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix via solution-casting and a heat-treatment process to achieve the TiO₂/GO/PVA nanocomposite film as a photocatalyst. The operative parameters were focused on initial solution pH value, GO concentration, and heat-treatment time, which subsequently determined the optimal indices for the catalyst film. The structure characterization of the Ti–O–C bond indicated that a strong interaction between GO and TiO₂ had been formed at the hydrolysis process while TiO₂/GO nanoparticles were chemically embedded in PVA matrix by the heat-treatment method. The photocatalytic degradation of PFOS and PFOA produced a nanocomposite film with 25 wt% TiO₂/GO that was treated at 120 °C for 3 h and exhibited a remarkable removal activity in acidic solution with a pH of 3. This condition efficiently degraded PFOS and PFOA by approximately 95.99 % and 96.89 %, respectively, through a photocatalytic reaction. This research presents a straightforward method to synthesize TiO₂/GO/PVA catalyst that influences persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under ultraviolet irradiation, which is of practical significance for environmental applications. © 2024 The Authors
