Applying The Contingent Valuation Method in Assessing Urban Parks: the Case of Niarchos in Greece

Urban parks are of great importance for the sustainability in the cities. The multiple influences that the parks and green spaces offer both to humans and to the environment have been widely recognized in the literature and include the physical and mental health of citizens. The urban parks are oxygen sources for cities, they make people feel close to nature, they contribute to the reduction of anxiety and they also offer many activities to the people. The impact of green spaces is of vital importance as they contribute to the reduction of temperature and they offer a cool environment improving the microclimate this way. The purpose of this study is to estimate the value that people attribute to urban parks applying the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). This value is estimated through urban park visitors' willingness to pay a hypothetical entrance ticket. For the purpose of our study, a survey was conducted to visitors of the Niarchos Park in Attica, Greece from July of 2018 to February of 2019. Subsequently, the empirical analysis is based on regression models. The demographic characteristics, such as the age, the educational level, the employment and the number of household members were found to be significant prognostic factors for people's willingness to pay or not in order to use the park, as also the importance that people give to green spaces. The visitors' expenses for the park visit were also taken into consideration and they are statistically important. The differentiation that may exist between a hypothetical scenario which is presented to the park's visitors and of a real situation should be taken into account.

Understanding and Measuring Sustainability Performance in the Banking Sector

Stakeholders have increasingly demanded the adoption of sustainable strategies and the increase in sustainability reports from the business. At the same time, the assessment and measurement of corporate performance now extend beyond its established financial return. This paper follows the argument that it is important for companies to be an entity that plays an active role in sustainable development. However, it is commonly accepted that there is no single, integrated way of assessing this performance. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework for understanding and measuring corporate sustainability in the banking sector. More specifically, the paper aims to fill the gap in the corporate sustainability assessment in the banking sector because there is, in fact, a tendency to underestimate the indirect impact these sectors have on environmental issues and social responsibility. A theoretical framework of an integrated composite sustainability index is analyzed based on the adoption of the GRI sustainability guidelines and the application of the analytic hierarchy process. The construction of a composite sustainability index includes the economic, environmental and social dimension of entrepreneurship. Each of the three sub-indices is a synthesis of several key performance indicators, which are usually the subjects of annual sustainability reports of an organization. This process is used to benchmark a company over a period of time and provides an indicative tool in order to analyze banking companies. Managers can use this analysis as a valuable component for comparing them over time, so as to adopt appropriate sustainable strategies and to improve the economic, environmental and social performance. A key tool to achieve sustainability in the banking sector is to analyze the corporate performance of the organizations. This will give a competitive advantage to the bank operators.

极端干旱和食草昆虫可以共同影响植物群落,并且它们的交互作用可能受到干旱模式的影响。然而,目前尚缺乏相关的观测证据。本研究以半干旱草原为研究对象,通过控制实验探讨了不同极端干旱模式与食草昆虫的交互作用对植物群落的影响。实验设置了3种干旱处理,分别为对照(自然降雨量)、慢性干旱(生长季5–8月减少66%降雨量)和急性干旱(6–7月完全无降雨)。在各小区设置了两种食草昆虫处理,分别是有食草昆虫和无食草昆虫。结果表明,食草昆虫和极端干旱及二者的交互作用对物种丰富度无显著影响。食草昆虫缓解了慢性干旱对总盖度的负面影响,而这种缓解作用在急性干旱下较低。食草昆虫对慢性干旱带来的负面效应具有更强的缓解作用,这主要是因为食草昆虫导致慢性干旱下适口性较高的杂类草(具有较低叶片碳含量、叶片干物质含量,以及较低叶片淀粉、钙、镁、锰含量)的大幅降低,进而降低了禾草的负面效应。上述结果表明,干旱和食草昆虫的交互作用受干旱模式的影响。通过调节植物的适口性来控制食草昆虫的采食行为,可以减轻极端干旱对草原生态系统的影响。

Effective mechanisms for environmental awareness enhancement of the Thai public company

The purpose of this paper is to explore effective mechanisms towards environmental awareness enhancement of the Thai public company. The environmental awareness has been strongly mentioned in the international agenda such as Agenda 21 to achieve sustainable development and be implemented at the global communities in all sectors. Thailand's environmental awareness has been set up as the national policy and continuously promoted in the business sectors. The selected study area is one of Thai industrial public companies mainly utilizing natural resources for its business. Data collection was conducted by using questionnaires with a stratified sampling method comprising of 28 managerial and 134 operational levels. Descriptive statistics were be used for data analysis presented in terms of percentage. The study found that the effective mechanisms towards environmental awareness enhancement include employees' participation in environmental friendly field trip, environmental knowledge provided by the company, supply chain involvement, law enforcement, and international environmental standard applied by the company. This study would recommend that public participation should be involved in order to make the mechanisms effectively.

Key factors of low carbon development strategy for sustainable transport

Cities become more vulnerable to climate change impacts causing by urbanization, economic growth, increasing of energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. People who live in the cities have already been affected from the impacts in terms of socioeconomic and environmental aspects. Sustainable transport plays the key role in CO2 mitigation and contributes positive impacts on sustainable development for the cities. Several studies in megacities both in developed and developing countries support that mass transit system is an important transportation mode in CO2 mitigation and sustainable transport development. This paper aims to study key factors of low carbon development strategy for sustainable transport. The Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit System (MRT) located in Bangkok was the study area. Data collection was using semi-structured in-depth interview protocol with thirty respondents consisting of six groups i.e. governmental agencies, the MRT operators, consulting companies, international organizations, non-profit organizations, and experts. The research findings highlighted the major factors and supplemental elements composing of institution and technical capacity, institutional framework, policy setting and process, and plan of implementation that would support more effective strategic process for low carbon development strategy (LCDS) for sustainable transport. The study would highly recommend on readiness of institution and technical capacities, stakeholder mapping, high-level decision- makers participation, and a clear direction of the governmental policies that are strongly needed in achieving the sustainable transport.

Estimation of heritability in three months old sengon (Falcataria moluccana) seedlings at a progeny testing in Kediri, East Jawa, Indonesia

Heritability values were estimated for three months old seedlings height and diameter of Sengon (Falcataria moluccana) grown in a progeny testing in Kediri, East Jawa, Indonesia. Totally 10.000 seedlings from 100 families were planted, consisting of 50 families from resistant mother trees to boktor pest (Xystrocera festiva) and gall rust disease (Uromycladium falcatariae) and other 50 families from susceptible ones. The progeny testing applied split-plot block design with four blocks, 100 families as sub-plot and resistance to pest and disease as main-plot, while observingnine seedlings as replications. Parameters observed were seedlings height and diameter. ANOVA showed that all treatments had significant and highly significant effects on all parameters. Interactions between block and families also interaction between block and resistance were highly significant. However, the heritability values of height and diameter were both low. These low heritability values at seedling stage were expected as Sengon woods are usually harvested at the age of 5 years. However, the highly significant effects of families on both growth parameters indicated that genetics have high contribution to the seedlings performances in the field.

One of the consequences of climate change is the increasing rainfall intensity and frequency leading to flooding. Lately, some major cities in West Africa have been experiencing high frequency of flooding due to extreme rainfall. This study investigated the temporal trends in flash flood and extreme rainfall events in Bamako, Mali for the period 1982–2019. Rainfall observation data from both Mali Meteorological Agency and Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation, and flood ground information’ collected from the Mali Civil protection service were used for this study. Five rainfall extreme indices established by Expert Team for Climate Change Detection Monitoring and Indices (ETCCDI) were analyzed to characterize extreme rainfall intensity and frequency indices. The Gumbel extreme value distribution was used to estimate the return period of flood and extreme rainfall for the period of 5 to 100 years based on the annual maximum daily rainfall. All the five extreme rainfall indices displayed an upward trends except the consecutive wet days (CWD) that showed a decreasing trend. Both the intensity and frequency of extreme rainfall were found to have increased over the study period. The analysis of the flood reports showed an increasing trend in Bamako from 1982 to 2019. The returned period revealed that about 58% of flood events in Bamako are caused by normal rainfall, with 33.3% being caused by extreme rainfall. It was also determined that most flood events were recorded in the years that had higher number of extremely wet days. The findings from this study have demonstrated that floods in Mali are prevalent and adaptation and mitigation strategies are needed. © 2022

ADVANCED GRAPHICS FOR COMMAND DISPLAYS

作者： WILLEY, FJ NESBITT, DW F. Jennings Willeyworked on radar sets in the Air Force before receiving his degree in physics from the University of Maryland. He then joined the Bendix Corporation where he worked for thirteen years in the design and development of foreign and domestic radar systems. He was appointed to the senior staff of the JHU/APL in 1979 where he has sponsored the development of test programs for Aegis hardware and has developed display concepts for the Aegis display system as part of the JHU/APL battle group antiair warfare coordination program. He currently is working to implement advanced graphics techniques in the operational environment. Mr. Willey is a member of ASNE Flagship Section and the Society for Information Display. David W. Nesbittis a member of the combat direction group at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Since joining APL in 1982 he has been involved in the development of advanced graphics display concepts for the Aegis display system as part of the JHU/APL battle group antiair warfare coordination program. Mr. Nesbitt is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a 1982 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College where he obtained a B.A. in physics.

Application of computer graphics to tactical displays should not default to simplistic expectations or to clever uses of color. Under the sponsorship of the Aegis shipbuilding project we have defined a method of applying advanced graphics techniques to command displays that asks “What is the display to do?” rather than “What color shall be make it?” The target display is the Aegis display system tactical plot, or track picture. This display has evolved to include graphic elements representing the environment, combat system capabilities, and battle plans. If these elements are all needed in the same display the resulting picture has the potential for great complexity. This paper provides a method for designing uncluttered displays that contain the needed amounts of data. The method develops displays from primary system requirements and includes a computer program (a rule-based system) that assigns hardware attributes (including gray scale, color, and area fill) to components of the picture (display elements). The resultant display is data intensive but not overwhelmingly complex.
