The effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculation to growth and survivability of micropropagated Eucalyptus pellita and Acacia crassicarpa in nursery

Inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi into micropropagated Eucalyptus pellita and Acacia crassicarpa, that may have poor root structures, was conducted. The study aimed to investigate the effects of Acaulospora sp., Acaulospora tuberculata, Entrophospora sp., Gigaspora sp., and two different isolates of Glomus maculosum inoculations on the growth parameters of 21-days old plantlets of Eucalyptus pellita and Acacia crassicarpa. After 120 days of acclimatization in the nursery, E. pellita seems to be more responsive to mycorrhizal inoculation than A. crassicarpa. The survival rate of E. pellita was almost three times of the control. Although there was no significant difference between treatments, inoculation of Glomus maculosum RD.1.5.1 and Acaulospora sp. GB.10.A2 showed the highest impact on plant height (54-56 cm), stem diameter (4.3-4.4 mm), and root dry-weight (2.03-2.05 gr) of E. pellita; and Entrophospora sp. RB.10.3.1 on plant height, stem diameter, and root dry-weight of A. crassicarpa (41.46 cm, 2.96 mm, and 1.34 gr, respectively). This study also revealed that the benefits of AM fungi association were not always related to the level of root colonization.

Anoa (Bubalus spp.) is an endemic species found only on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. The lack of intact review evaluating the physiological condition leads to difficulties in the conservation efforts of this endangered species. This study aimed to examine the hematological and urine parameters of Anoa at the environment and Forestry Research and development Institute of Manado (BP2LHK). Four Anoa were used in this study. The physiological conditions were recorded during the study period, while hematological and urine parameters were only examined once and twice, respectively, due to limited access to the animals. The level of hemoglobin was 17.18 ± 0.8 g/dL, packed cell volume of 45.22 ± 3.4 %, total erythrocyte count was 10.46 ± 0.5 ×106/µl and total leukocyte count was 5.65 ± 1.0 ×103/µl. The mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration was 43.38 ± 3.5 fl, 16.48 ± 0.7 gl, and 38.28 ± 1.3 g/dL, respectively. The urine leukocytes were 0-15 leuko/µl, urobilinogen level was 3.50 µmol/L, protein value was 39.50 ± 10.3 mg/dL, and urine pH and urine density were 9.00 and 1.00 g/mL, respectively. The urine sedimentation analysis showed the formation of the urinary crystal (amorphous crystal, calcium carbonate, and struvite). We conclude that hematological and urine parameters were not different among Anoa in this study.

Gerunggang (Cratoxylum arborescens (Vahl.) Blume) is one of the native peat forest species in Indonesia. This species is widely used in the rehabilitation of degraded peatlands. Information about the cultivation and growth of gerunggang on peat rehabilitated land is still limited. Even information about pest disturbances of gerunggang has never been reported before on research sites. This study aims to measure the intensity of gerunggang pest attacks on peatland rehabilitation plantations. Observations were taken on one-year-old gerunggang species planted on peat rehabilitation land in Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The results showed that shoot-sucking pests Mictis longicornis (Hemiptera, Coreidae) had attacked all gerunggang plants or the pest attack incidence reached 100%. Symptoms of pest attacks are indicated by rotting of the shoot stalk, which in turn causes shoot death. Pests M. longicornis attack by sucking the liquid on the stems of Gerunggang shoots, causing the shoots to rot and die. The attack intensity reached 50.56% or was classified as a heavy pest attack. Although the pest attack does not result in the death of the gerunggang plant, its abundance can interfere with plant growth. Therefore, pest attacks need to be controlled to avoid further losses, such as a reduction in gerunggang’s potential as a native species for peatland rehabilitation and other benefits.

The SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused a public health crisis globally. Against the backdrop of global resilience, studies have demonstrated the therapeutic value of home gardening as a measure to strengthen human health. However, there is a lack of comparative studies on its benefits across countries. Studies need to examine the role of home gardening in improving public health in various societies to understand and encourage this practice broadly and effectively. We chose Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam as case studies, which have suffered substantial pandemic impacts, with millions of infections and thousands of deaths. We explored and compared the perceptions of people on home gardening and its health benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted online surveys in three countries between May 1 and September 30, 2022, with a total of 1172 participants. Data were collated on perceived pandemic stress, challenges and solutions in gardening, home gardening intentions, and mental and physical health benefits. In these countries, we found that perceived pandemic stress positively affects home gardening intentions, whereby the motivation of Vietnamese people is the highest. Challenges hinder gardening intentions, while the solutions only positively affect gardening intentions in Taiwan and Vietnam. Home gardening intentions positively affect mental and physical health, whereby there are higher mental health benefits in Taiwanese people than in Thai people. Our findings potentially support public health recovery and promote healthy lifestyles during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2023, The Author(s).

Prior to his present appointment he served in the Combat Systems Division Naval Sea Systems Command and served as radar branch head in the former Naval Ship Engineering Center (NAVSEC). He was responsible for development and production of shipboard radars such as the AN/SPS-48 AN/SPS-49 AN/SPS-52 and AN/SPS-55. His primary Navy radar and combat system experience was attained during his earlier career in the Navy's Bureau of Ships where he was the AN/SPS-48 radar project engineer. In addition to ASNE which he joined in 1977 he is a member of IEEE and ASE and has had several technical papers published on radar radar antennas radar processing and transmission lines. Mr. Biondi has a total of 25 years naval experience in radar combat systems and communications. Richard W. Pride:received his B.S.E.E. from the University of Maine in 1959. Currently he is head of the Combatant Ship Section code PDE 110–143 in the Communications Systems Application Branch within the NAVELEXSYSCOM. Prior to joining the Naval Electronic Systems Command in 1974 he was the head of the Communication Antenna Design Section of the former Naval Ship Engineering Center. Harold D. External communications is a critical element in the U.S. Navy design and utilization of a ship's combat system. The communications antenna system is a key factor in attainment of reliable circuit performance and reduction of electromagnetic interference (EMI). To maintain pace with improved ship manufacturing techniques and construction materials, along with design efforts to reduce topside generated EMI/RFI effects, an improved antenna design must also evolve. With the ever increasing complexity in the integration of the topside environment, the RF aspects of the antenna designs must be augmented by detailed analysis of the operating environment and the mechanical design if the goals of reliability and quality performance are to be achieved. The Naval Electronic Systems Command has developed a new “Broadband HF Communications Antenna.” This paper traces the design evolution and describes the processes in determining current design deficiencies, the design objectives to correct these deficiencies and the results obtained.

Laccase (EC 1.10.3.2) is an extracellular enzymes that is widely used in the decolorization process of textile dye wastewater. The aims of this study was to isolate, purify, and characterize the laccase produced by Trametes pavonia EDN 134 and to explore the laccase ability to decolorize azo textile dyes. Laccase purification process was carried out by fractionation using ammonium sulfate and continued with Hi Trap desalting column chromatography method. The results revealed that the highest laccase specific activity was 8268 U/g and detected in the ammonium sulfate fraction 40-60%. The purification using AKTA-Prime showed that the laccase specific activity enhanced to 98976.61 U/g. The purified laccase activity was optimum at pH 4 and temperature 27°C. The addition of heavy metal ions Hg2+ and Zn2+ reduced the activity of laccase, while Cu2+ and Mn2+ enhanced the activity. In addition, the purified laccase decolorized 200 ppm of Methyl Red (MR), Reactive Black 5 (RB5), and Reactive Red 120 (RR 120) of azo dyes as much as 50.7%, 21.9%, and 35.5%, respectively. This study proposes the potency of the laccase from T. pavonia EDN 134 for decolorization of textile dye wastewater.

Background: Recent studies have reported that air pollution is related to kidney diseases. However, the global evidence on the risk of death from acute kidney injury (AKI) owing to air pollution is limited. Therefore, we investigated the association between short-term exposure to air pollution—particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)—and AKI-related mortality using a multi-country dataset. Methods: This study included 41,379 AKI-related deaths in 136 locations in six countries during 1987–2018. A novel case time-series design was applied to each air pollutant during 0–28 lag days to estimate the association between air pollution and AKI-related deaths. Moreover, we calculated AKI deaths attributable to non-compliance with the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines. Results: The relative risks (95% confidence interval) of AKI-related deaths are 1.052 (1.003, 1.103), 1.022 (0.994, 1.050), and 1.022 (0.982, 1.063) for 5, 10, and 10 µg/m3 increase in lag 0–28 days of PM2.5, warm-season O3, and NO2, respectively. The lag-distributed association showed that the risk appeared immediately on the day of exposure to air pollution, gradually decreased, and then increased again reaching the peak approximately 20 days after exposure to PM2.5 and O3. We also found that 1.9%, 6.3%, and 5.2% of AKI deaths were attributed to PM2.5, warm-season O3, and NO2 concentrations above the WHO guidelines. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that public health policies to reduce air pollution may alleviate the burden of death from AKI and suggests the need to investigate the several pathways between air pollution and AKI death. © 2023 The Author(s)

Motivation Here, we make available a second version of the BioTIME database, which compiles records of abundance estimates for species in sample events of ecological assemblages through time. The updated version expands version 1.0 of the database by doubling the number of studies and includes substantial additional curation to the taxonomic accuracy of the records, as well as the metadata. Moreover, we now provide an R package (BioTIMEr) to facilitate use of the database. Main Types of Variables Included The database is composed of one main data table containing the abundance records and 11 metadata tables. The data are organised in a hierarchy of scales where 11,989,233 records are nested in 1,603,067 sample events, from 553,253 sampling locations, which are nested in 708 studies. A study is defined as a sampling methodology applied to an assemblage for a minimum of 2 years. Spatial Location and Grain Sampling locations in BioTIME are distributed across the planet, including marine, terrestrial and freshwater realms. Spatial grain size and extent vary across studies depending on sampling methodology. We recommend gridding of sampling locations into areas of consistent size. Time Period and Grain The earliest time series in BioTIME start in 1874, and the most recent records are from 2023. Temporal grain and duration vary across studies. We recommend doing sample-level rarefaction to ensure consistent sampling effort through time before calculating any diversity metric. Major Taxa and Level of Measurement The database includes any eukaryotic taxa, with a combined total of 56,400 taxa. Software Format csv and. SQL.
