The impacts of information and communications technology (ICT) on national development and wellbeing is a current research issue. By integrating four World Bank datasets and World Happiness Report’s global wellbeing dataset, this study analyzes the impacts of ICT on national development and wellbeing in 124 economies. There are several significant findings based on multiple regression analysis. First, Internet, mobile, and broadband subscription rates are significant predictors for logged GDP per capita. Second, broadband subscription rate is a significant predictor for perceptions of corruption. Third, Internet and broadband penetration rates are significant predictors for subjective wellbeing, social support and healthy life expectancy. Finally, fixed broadband and fixed telephone subscription rates are significant predictors for freedom to make life choices. Interestingly, fixed telephone subscription rate inversely predicts freedom to make life choices. The findings of this study bring updated insights into ICT impacts on national development and wellbeing around the world.

Studies on Ghana’s solid waste value chain have focused on plastic waste and e-waste with little emphasis on the coconut waste value chain as a potential for sustainable growth. This paper, therefore, focused on exploring the coconut waste value chain in Ghana and its potential to contribute to achieving a circular economy and local economic development. Using both qualitative and qualitative research methods, the study seeks to understand the coconut waste value chain in Ghana and examine its potential to achieve a circular economy and local economic development. It was found that the coconut waste value chain in Ghana has the potential to contribute to achieving a circular economy and provide local economic development at various phases within the value chain despite existing challenges. The paper recommends the enforcement of regulatory frameworks for sustainable coconut waste collection and transportation. It advocates for a strong partnership between local authorities and private entities to promote investment, innovation, and technology for recycling coconut waste. How strong is demand for public transport service in Nepal? A case study of Kathmandu using a choice-based conjoint experiment

A public transport system is the most efficient and equitable solution to the challenges of urban mobility and climate change. To improve public transport, technological innovations, policy interventions, and behavioral changes should all be applied appropriately;however, there is a lack of information about the demand for public transport services in developing countries. This paper aims to measure the degree of demand for public transport services by comparing various factors used as a case study in Kathmandu, one of the most congested urban areas in a developing country. We designed a choice-based conjoint experiment with five attributes: mode of transport, waiting time, one-way fare per km, commute time per km, and payment method. Our results indicate that 73% of the respondents are in favor of changing the current transport policy and wish for a shift to public transport, which means that most commuters are in favor of the proposed mode of transport, that is, MRT. On the other hand, the study reveals that respondents have a negative evaluation of motorbikes, one of the most popular modes of transport in Kathmandu. Our results, showing users’ unsatisfactory situation with motorbikes as a transport measure, provide transport planners guidance for addressing current public transport policies, indicating a massive rapid transit system with a low fare would be highly welcome in a typical congestion area like Kathmandu. © 2022, The Author(s).

The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) is increasing worldwide, especially in developing countries. Beyond the potential health outcomes of SSB taxation, its economic effects must be examined. This article aims to analyze the wide-economy impacts of SSB tax in Brazil in the short- and long-term. We used a national dynamic computable general equilibrium model calibrated for the Brazilian economy, using data from the 2015 input–output matrix released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. The model evaluates the effects on macroeconomic indicators of production, employment, household consumption, prices and tax revenue from 2023 to 2032. We analyzed four scenarios, considering different levels and schemes of taxation. In the short term, we observe a decrease in SSB consumption and negative macroeconomic impacts when government spending remains unchanged. However, redirecting the tax revenue towards public health expenditure mitigates these negative effects while maintaining similar outcomes for the SSB industry. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2024.

Mycobacteria are causative agents of tuberculosis (TB), which is a global health concern. Drug-resistant TB strains are rapidly emerging, thereby necessitating the urgent development of new drugs. Two-component signal transduction systems (TCSs) are signaling pathways involved in the regulation of various bacterial behaviors and responses to environmental stimuli. Applying specific inhibitors of TCSs can disrupt bacterial signaling, growth, and virulence, and can help combat drug-resistant TB. We conducted a comprehensive pharmacophore-based inhibitor screening and biochemical and biophysical examinations to identify, characterize, and validate potential inhibitors targeting the response regulators PhoP and MtrA of mycobacteria. The constructed pharmacophore model Phar-PR-n4 identified effective inhibitors of formation of the PhoP–DNA complex: ST132 (IC50 = 29 ± 1.6 µM) and ST166 (IC50 = 18 ± 1.3 µM). ST166 (KD = 18.4 ± 4.3 μM) and ST132 (KD = 14.5 ± 0.1 μM) strongly targeted PhoP in a slow-on, slow-off manner. The inhibitory potency and binding affinity of ST166 and ST132 for MtrAC were comparable to those of PhoP. Structural analyses and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that ST166 and ST132 mainly interact with the α8-helix and C-terminal β-hairpin of PhoP, with functionally essential residue hotspots for structure-based inhibitor optimization. Moreover, ST166 has in vitro antibacterial activity against Macrobacterium marinum. Thus, ST166, with its characteristic 1,2,5,6-tetrathiocane and terminal sulphonic groups, has excellent potential as a candidate for the development of novel antimicrobial agents to combat pathogenic mycobacteria. © 2024 The Authors

Complaint resolution that arise due to internal and external factors in a company can be monitored through the Service Recovery Index (SRI), and SRI is developed through a number of factors that influence it. Meanwhile, the SRI model needs to be developed to see the business sustainability through implementation knowledge management system in the organization. The data collection method was carried out, starting with building a research instrument based on knowledge management theory and continued with observation and distributing questionnaires to respondents who were involved in the business process of managing SRI. The data analysis method was used to process the data from the questionnaire, factor analysis method was used and the method to build the model used was the regression analysis method. The results obtained from this study are the discovery of 4 (four) factors with a number of indicators that are grouped on each formed factor, which can then be made and built a readiness model that reflects current conditions, so that it can be used to build predictions in the future related to readiness. implementation of knowledge management system development in order to support increased understanding of the service recovery index in the organization. © 2021 ACM.

Impact of monetary and non-monetary benefits and costs information on youth's preference for labor emigration in Nepal: A vignette experiment

What factors affect the youth's preference for labor emigration is one crucial question that needs to be answered in a remittance-dominated economy like Nepal. To address this question, how do five types of information, i.e., (i) monetary benefits, (ii) non-monetary benefits, (iii) monetary costs, (iv) non-monetary costs, and (v) employment tenure, affect preference for emigration was evaluated employing a vignette experiment with 1549 randomly selected high-school students in Kathmandu, Nepal. The information on monetary and non-monetary benefits increases the preference for labor emigration. In contrast, the information on non-monetary costs decreases the preference for labor emigration, while it is insensitive to the information on monetary costs. Lastly, the length of employment tenure does not significantly impact the preference for labor emigration. In addition, the subsample analyses reveal some clear evidence of heterogeneous effects of information across respondents' characteristics, such as gender, religion, and ethnicity. © 2024 The Authors

The urgency of gender-responsive development planning in the implementation of village legislation is needed to facilitate the results of development that can be carried out by both men and women. This research aims to determine the efforts to increase gender mainstreaming in village development planning for the implementation of Number 6 the Year 2014 concerning Villages. This research was an evaluative descriptive study conducted in Uluere District, Bantaeng Regency. The method used was a sequential mixed method, including secondary data, i.e., the identification of data and the review of documentation relevant to the research and primary data, i.e. the data collected through focus group discussion and questionnaire with Likert Scale. The sample was selected purposively from six villages. The data were analyzed by transforming qualitative data into quantitative data using basic internal measurements. The results of the research indicate that the implementation of Law Number 6 Year 2014 concerning with Villages in gender-responsive development planning in Uluere District, Bantaeng Regency has not been fully integrated properly. This by gender-responsive indicators, which are still in the moderate category. The contents of the village RPJM documents do not fully represent the integration of gender issues. The representation of women in the village in village government organizational structure and village community organizations is still in low category. The availability of human resources that understand gender and mainstreaming and regulations/policies in the village level are still relatively moderate even though budget support has been in high category. In such a condition, full commitment from village government is needed in ensuring gender-responsive development planning in the village level through continuous and gradual capacity building, information dissemination, social media and innovative in developing a policy program in accordance with village authorit

This study aims to estimate the factors explaining the expenditure of the 2018 Asian Games’ international attendees, including athletes, officials, journalists, committees and spectators. During two weeks of the event, a survey was administered yielding valid responses from 1914 respondents. The findings suggest that spending compositions differ across age group, country of origins and types of participant. Furthermore, the total spending correlates with types of participants, age group, country of origins, length of stay, travelling experiences and internet provision. The respondents’ perception on host country’s safety and security is also an important aspect to be considered for future mega sporting event, especially after the global Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The implications of the findings are discussed. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
