With the increase of variable renewable energy sources (VRES) share in electricity systems, many studies were developed in order to determine their optimal technological and spatial mix. Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) has been frequently applied in this context. However, some crucial aspects, important in energy planning, are not addressed by these analyses. We, therefore, propose several improvements and evaluate how each change in formulation impacts results. More specifically, we address generation costs, system demand, and firm energy output, present a formal model and apply it to the case of Brazil. We found that, after including our proposed modifications, the resulting efficient frontier differs strongly from the one obtained in the original formulation. Portfolios with high output standard deviation are not able to provide a firm output level at competitive costs. Furthermore, we show that diversification plays an important role in smoothing output from VRES portfolios. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Renewable energy certificate mechanism and markets in Taiwan: The evolution and characteristics

With the world striving to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, carbon-free energy systems must accelerate. This study examines how Taiwan's renewable energy certificate (T-REC) assists Taiwan-based global enterprises in meeting supply chain requirements and establishing a renewable energy certification and initial market system with reliability and validity. The analysis examines several critical dimensions, including government-led initiatives, the voluntary nature of the program, the design of bundled certificates, and their integration with the national greenhouse gas registry. From an institutional perspective, it can be affirmed that the institutional design of the T-REC aligns with the fundamental purpose of energy attribute certificates in promoting the development and utilization of electricity derived from renewable sources. The reliability of the T-REC can be strengthened through government-led governance. Furthermore, the T-REC tracking system is integrated with the national greenhouse gas registry platform to prevent the double-counting of environmental benefits. From a market perspective, the design of the T-REC shapes the quality and operational regulations of the initial renewable electricity trading market. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Land tenure for Indigenous peoples and local communities in forested areas can improve livelihoods and protect forests while recognizing territorial and human rights. Yet little is known about the relationship between land tenure and deforestation within Quilombola territories (QTs) of Afro-descendant populations in Brazil. Understanding these relationships is important given that only 176 of the more than 5,900 QTs have been recognized with legal land tenure rights throughout Brazil. In this study, we conducted a difference-in-differences analysis to estimate the average treatment effect of land tenure on rates of deforestation, reforestation, and net forest cover change from 1985 to 2020 in 313 QTs across all of Brazil as well as 104 more specifically in the Brazilian Amazon and 81 in the Atlantic Forest biome. We additionally tested changes in forest outcomes before and after an earlier stage of the tenure process (incomplete tenure). We found no evidence that formalized land tenure had influenced forest outcomes in QTs. As the first rigorous analysis of the effect of formalized tenure specifically in QTs, our study also reveals several primary knowledge and data gaps relating to Quilombolas. We emphasize the need for much more data to be systematically collected and disseminated on QTs, as well as the need for more research to be conducted to fully understand how tenure influences forest cover in QTs. We highlight that there are considerable opportunities to improve the state of research and understanding about rights, tenure, and forest conservation among Quilombolas, as an important but largely-overlooked (in terms of research) category of traditional peoples in Brazil. We additionally contribute to a growing body of literature on the role of rights-based approaches to conservation. © 2025 The Authors

Biofuels are currently the only available bulk renewable fuel. They have, however, limited expansion potential due to high land requirements and associated risks for biodiversity, food security, and land conflicts. We therefore propose to increase output from ethanol refineries in a land-neutral methanol pathway: surplus CO2-streams from fermentation are combined with hydrogen from renewably powered electrolysis to synthesize methanol. We illustrate this pathway with the Brazilian sugarcane ethanol industry using a spatio-temporal model. The fuel output of existing ethanol generation facilities can be increased by 42%-49% or ∼100TWh without using additional land. This amount is sufficient to cover projected growth in Brazilian biofuel demand in 2030. We identify a trade-off between renewable energy generation technologies: wind power requires the least amount of land whereas a mix of wind and solar costs the least. The paper aims to determine the socio-economic factors that significantly affect the individual smoking consumption and to make smoker profile in Central Java Province. This paper uses national economy social survey (Susenas) based on individual analytical units. The estimation technique with ordinary least squares regression. The findings of the paper is the factors that significantly influence the individual smoking consumption are cigarette prices, income, marriage status, urban-rural, education level, poor status, and living condition. This study suggests that to reduce cigarette consumption, the government needs to increase the price of cigarettes. In addition, the government needs to promote anti-smoking campaigns and smoking bans at work. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The urgency of gender-responsive development planning in the implementation of village legislation is needed to facilitate the results of development that can be carried out by both men and women. This research aims to determine the efforts to increase gender mainstreaming in village development planning for the implementation of Number 6 the Year 2014 concerning Villages. This research was an evaluative descriptive study conducted in Uluere District, Bantaeng Regency. The method used was a sequential mixed method, including secondary data, i.e., the identification of data and the review of documentation relevant to the research and primary data, i.e. the data collected through focus group discussion and questionnaire with Likert Scale. The sample was selected purposively from six villages. The data were analyzed by transforming qualitative data into quantitative data using basic internal measurements. The results of the research indicate that the implementation of Law Number 6 Year 2014 concerning with Villages in gender-responsive development planning in Uluere District, Bantaeng Regency has not been fully integrated properly. This by gender-responsive indicators, which are still in the moderate category. The contents of the village RPJM documents do not fully represent the integration of gender issues. The representation of women in the village in village government organizational structure and village community organizations is still in low category. The availability of human resources that understand gender and mainstreaming and regulations/policies in the village level are still relatively moderate even though budget support has been in high category. In such a condition, full commitment from village government is needed in ensuring gender-responsive development planning in the village level through continuous and gradual capacity building, information dissemination, social media and innovative in developing a policy program in accordance with village authorit

Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions’ effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior—several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people’s initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors. © 2024 American Association for the Advancement of Science.
