This work has as main objective to perform the performance analysis of the fractional least mean square (FLMS) algorithm, with respect to convergence speed and steady-state mean square error (MSE), in the indirect adaptive inverse control (IAIC) design. Since the main goal of IAIC, through inverse identification of the plant model, is to obtain a controller that tracks the plant inverse dynamics at each update of the controller weight vector, then performance analysis of the estimation algorithm is of fundamental importance. As a complexity scenario and aiming to obtain nonconservative results, the performance analysis was performed in the IAIC design for a non-minimum phase plant in the presence of sinusoidal reference signal and sinusoidal disturbance signal. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This work addresses to perform the direct adaptive inverse control (DAIC) design via fractional least mean square (FLMS) algorithm. Since the controller of DAIC aims to track the plant inverse dynamics as a function of the plant model inverse identification, to track nonlinear dynamics of polynomial type, in this work, the controller is based on Volterra model. Since the performance of an estimation algorithm is important to update the estimate of the controller weight vector, the main objective of this work is to perform the performance analysis of FLMS algorithm, with respect to convergence speed and mean square error (MSE). The proposed analysis was performed on a model containing a polynomial type nonlinearity, represented by a Nonlinear AutoRegressive with eXogenous inputs (NARX) model. In addition, the proposed analysis was performed in the presence of a sinusoidal disturbance signal and time-varying reference signal. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Equalization is an important application of the signal processing theory to communication theory, since its function is to cancel noise present in communication channels. The performance of an adaptive equalizer is influenced by the step size of an adaptive algorithm based on stochastic gradient used for updating the estimative of its weight vector. A good performance in terms of speed convergence and steady-state mean square error (MSE) of adaptive equalization can be obtained through of the variable step size. To this end, in this work, the adaptive equalizer design is performed via fuzzy variable step size–normalized least mean square (FVSS-NLMS) algorithm, whose variable step size is obtained through a Mamdani fuzzy inference system (MFIS). The adaptive equalization methodology was analyzed in three signal-to-noise ratio scenarios. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

One of the most important tasks in autonomous driving and autonomous vehicle navigation is detecting a path or trajectory that the vehicle should follow. Over the past few years, some learning-based works have stood out more than traditional computer vision techniques in detecting such lanes. In this paper we present an approach to solve the lane line detection problem in the context of visual path following by using a residual factorized convolutional neural network. Experimental results show a promising model that can detect lane lines even under severe lighting conditions and in the presence of occlusions and shadows. The path detection system was tested along with a visual path following formulation based on Nonlinear Model Predictive Control. Still, it can be used for any controller in the context of visual navigation for autonomous vehicles. Nonetheless, the proposed model architecture strikes a remarkable balance between accuracy and efficiency, making the system suitable for real-time applications.

This paper presents a trajectory planning and obstacle avoidance system for Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) in complex and dynamic navigation environments. The developed system employs a modified Artificial Potential Field (APF) algorithm and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) to ensure safe and efficient navigation. Modifications were implemented to the original algorithm to deal with obstacles approaching the autonomous vehicle, including adding vectors to determine the direction of deviation based on the cross-product. The proposed system was validated in the Gazebo simulation environment within a dynamic scenario featuring static and moving obstacles.

The demand for renewable energy solutions has become a global trend due to the current climate change scenario and the increased demand for electricity. Hence, in several countries, the share of renewable sources in the electric matrix has grown with the insertion of new energy sources, such as offshore wind. Brazil presents optimal conditions for the construction of offshore wind farms. The Brazilian 10-year Energy Expansion Plan 2029, in addition to placing this source as an expansion for the coming years, intensely focuses on hydrogen. For this reason, this study aims to assist planners and agents interested in running new construction projects of offshore wind farms with green hydrogen production. Such a study case seeks better use of the available wind resources in the high energy consumption regions of Brazil's South and Southeast, assessing the wind resource considering technical, environmental, social, and economic restrictions to identify the best locations for installing wind farms. As such, it processes the data within a geographic information system, and then a fuzzy logic-based model is used for the joint evaluation of constraints. Results show that Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo are the most favorable places. © 2023 IEEE.

Purpose: Objective response detection (ORD) techniques assess if evoked potentials are embedded in the background electroencephalogram (EEG). If each technique gives its result, then it is necessary to check which test performs it better. Therefore, a methodology derived from Monte Carlo (MC) simulation was proposed to compare five ORD techniques. Methods: It was based on estimating the probability of detection (PD) of the tests for the different number of data segments (windows) and with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ranging from − 40 to 0 dB. Moreover, an EEG database of subjects under auditory stimulation was used in order to validate the proposed methodology. Results: The simulation results showed that the detectors that used the neighboring frequency-band to the interest frequency, as the local spectral F test and Hotelling’s T2, have a better PD when the number of windows used is less than about 20. Conversely, when they are compared in cases with a greater number of windows, magnitude squared coherence, and modified Rayleigh test tend to have a higher PD value. These predictions were validated with the EEG signals. Conclusion: Therefore, this work predicted the performance of detectors only by means of MC simulation, as a function of the number of windows and tuned to an SNR range consistent with the EEG. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical engineering.

This paper proposes a technique for indoor localization based on a visible light positioning approach. The strategy relies on using lighting luminaires that modulate the luminous flux at different frequencies. A light sensor is then used to gather the illuminance signal used as input for a previously trained Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to estimate the position of the sensor. The work's main contribution is using an illuminance estimator based on the lighting distribution of the luminaires to perform the training procedure of the ANN. The lighting distribution is obtained through *** file provided by the manufacturer, i.e., the same file used for lighting designs. Therefore, by using characteristics of the environment and *** file, the proposed system can provide data to train accurately the ANN used in the positioning method. The results attested to the satisfactory performance of the proposed localization technique as it produced mean distance errors of 1.51cm and 0.79cm considering 0% and 70% walls' reflectance levels, respectively. © 2022 IEEE.

Reliable operation is essential for any power electronic system. Nevertheless, power electronic systems include a large number of fragile elements. Among these elements, the semiconductor devices are the most likely to fail. Recent reliability evaluation tools employ a cycle counting algorithm to compute the degradation in semiconductor devices, where the rainflow algorithm is the most popular. However, since the rainflow was first created for fatigue analysis, this algorithm presents some issues when applied for semiconductor devices. Indeed, the rainflow is unable to compute the effective heating time and time-dependent equivalent mean temperature of each thermal cycle. Besides, half-cycles are counted by conventional rainflow. However, apart from the half-cycles at the end of the data, these half-cycles should not be taken into consideration in the life consumption computation. Therefore, this work proposes a modified rainflow for the lifetime estimation of semiconductor devices. This methodology adapts the conventional rainflow to filter half-cycles and compute the effective heating time and the equivalent mean temperature. The impact of the methodology on lifetime estimation is verified in a modular multilevel converter. Besides, analyses with two distinct mission profiles are performed to evaluate the modified impact on lifetime estimation. The results demonstrated that the modified rainflow significantly affects the lifetime computation of all critical joints of an insulatedgate bipolar transistor (IGBT) module for both case studies considered. © 2023 IEEE.

Multi-robot Map Exploration Based on Multiple Rapidly-Exploring Randomized Trees

A map is necessary for tasks such as path planning or localization, which are common to mobile robot navigation. However, a map may be unavailable if the environment in which a robot navigates is unknown. Creating a map requires an exploration algorithm. Such algorithms guide robots to boundaries that separate known portions of a map from the unknown portions. Such boundaries are known as frontiers. There are image processing-based algorithms that detect frontiers. The authors’ previous work uses two, i.e., local and global, rapidly exploring random trees (RRTs) for two-dimensional exploration using a single robot. The present work applies the above to a multiagent system with three robots. A market-based strategy is used to allocate exploration tasks to the robots. Results show that the developed exploration strategy successfully explores a map in a reasonable amount of time compared to image processing-based approaches, and also reduces the map exploration cost. This strategy is readily usable for three-dimensional exploration with drones. It is also shown that the usage of a local frontier detector along with a global frontier detector helps reduce exploration time compared to simply using a global frontier detector alone. As an outline to future work, the paper also shows an extension of the proposed approach towards three-dimensional mapping using a single robot. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
