Nowadays, industrial processes are creating increasing demands for optimized and efficient sensing systems and require high reliability and a short time interval for information delivery. This paper presents an embedded sensor system that uses the ESP-NOW protocol with a Mesh and Ad Hoc network, in order to provide an auto mesh configuration upon failure at some point in the network. This system was implemented to monitor the variables of an induction motor, after which, before sending the data to the cloud, local processing is performed to reduce the volume of data. Finally, a computer simulation of the WROOM-32 module is performed for a thermal analysis during its operation, where the heating points of the plate are identified and analyzed, in order to validate that the system, even processing a large amount of data, maintains a high reliability during its operation. ©2023 IEEE.

Image classification has been instrumental in the interpretation and labeling of images in the field of remote sensing, computer vision, and in robotics applications. Machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms, particularly artificial neural networks, are extensively utilized for this purpose. In this work we propose the Expanded Latent Space Autoencoder (ELSA) with a case use application to classify land cover data. The main idea on the ELSA network structure is to utilize the latent spaces of multiple internal autoencoders in order to create an expanded latent space. This expanded latent space extracts more information from the input data, and serves as input features for a more simpler classifier network. In order to evaluate the proposed network’s ability to extract features and classify complex and multispectral images we employed it to the EuroSAT dataset. The results demonstrate a remarkable capacity for feature extraction using the ELSA network, with lower complexity, trained with a reduced number of images. The classifier network achieved a final accuracy of 98.7%, matching or exceeding the performance of more complex state-of-the-art models. ©2024 IEEE.

We bring historical findings related to the most important Latin American and Brazilian Robotics Symposiums including their quality analytics regarding all papers published since their creation. For this quality analysis, we first provide a little of history and then we apply a methodology based on a systematic mapping of the literature using Scopus (from Elsevier) and Web of Science. The quality analysis includes variables as citations metrics, and also other historical variables as participation per countries, per states, per universities, and contributed areas among others. We use metadata and tools available in the most commonly used digital libraries, for a fair comparison. To the end, with basis on the results of our methodological approach, we point out that the community has followed the right path for establishing a high quality event, mainly regarding the decision of publication of the proceedings at IEEE Xplore, and recently in the Brazilian Computer Society Library (Sol-SBC), all together. Also, our analysis corroborate to verify the modi operandi that have been used in the events execution, including joining in the Workshop of Robotics in Education (WRE) and the competitions (RCB, OBR, MNR, CBR, LARC). Besides happening jointly, each event keeps their original event structure and characteristics. ©2024 IEEE.

Analysis of EEG microstates to predict epileptic seizures in an online approach

Purpose: Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. The unpredictability of seizures negatively affects the lives of patients, causing insecurity in daily activities and may cause injury or even death. Seizure prediction can prevent, through medication or safe preparation, a series of psychological, social, and physical problems that are direct consequences of this disease, such as accidents and mental disorders. This work aims to present a proposal to generalized seizure prediction online using microstate analysis, a method that has been little explored in epilepsy studies but has great potential to generate good results. Methods: This study presents a generalized prediction model applied to the CHB-MIT database. The approach used the leave-one-patient-out (LOPO) cross-validation so that the seizures in the test phase belong to an exclusive patient that is not included in train data. The models are obtained from 48 statistical characteristics of the EEG microstates, and to distinguish the interictal and preictal states of EEG signals from epileptic patients, SVM and kNN classifiers are used. Results: The best results achieved in the experiments were using the SVM RBF classifier, with 96.11% of sensitivity and FPR of 0.48 h−1, and it is possible to predict an epileptic event with an average of 1.96 h in advance. Conclusion: Experimental results showed EEG microstate analysis is a promising method for the prediction of epileptic seizures, and further studies with other characteristics and classifiers can allow better results. © 2021, Sociedade Brasileira de Engenharia Biomedica.

The connectivity demanded by Industry 4.0 poses new challenges for cyber-physical systems (CPS), notably bolstering resilience against cyberattacks. In this paper, the authors use the formalism of Discrete Event Systems (DES) to design an approach that aims to protect CPS against actuator attacks using event-based symmetric cryptography. In this approach, controllable events that are properly selected are encrypted before being transmitted from the controller to the plant, leading intruders to mistakenly infer the supervisor's control actions. Thus, attacks on actuators do not have the expected impact on the plant, preventing unsafe states from being reached. The proposed approach is applied to a case study from the literature, where the identification of the attack is done without causing any damage while maintaining the integrity of the system. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents an approach for choosing neutral reactors in transmission lines (TL) with shunt compensation. Data from the Brazilian Power Grid were used for digital simulations with ATPDraw, and a sensitivity analysis was carried out with various parameters (line length, neutral reactor, fault location) to find curves that correlate the optimum reactor value with the transmission line shunt compensation level. The influence of line length and compensation level are discussed. Limitations are presented, and the results show that the approach allows reactors to be obtained efficiently for most of the compensation range. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper is presented the performance analysis of a differential pair sinusoidal oscillator with a surface acoustic wave sensor in the feedback loop. The oscillator components were selected for an oscillation frequency of 117.6 MHz and the SAW sensor model used was based on a piezoelectric crystal. The oscillator performance was verified through computer simulations by analysing the oscillation frequency and the amplitude of the the output voltage. The first analysis showed an amplitude greater than zero and an oscillation frequency close to the resonance frequency of the sensor model. Subsequently, the oscillator performance was analyzed by varying the value of one component at a time using Monte Carlo method. Based on this analysis, it was possible to determine a range of values for each component in which the output maintains oscillation. Finally, the oscillator's performance was analyzed with simultaneous variation in the values of its components. For this simulation, the range of values found in the previous analysis was used, and the variation was carried out using the Monte Carlo method. In this case, the circuit maintains oscillation in 76.8% of the iterations. These results confirm that the oscillator performance is adequate, maintaining oscillation even with variations in the values of its components. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, a pre-synchronization strategy for Grid-Forming inverters is proposed. This strategy is inspired by the phenomena of spontaneous synchronization of networked oscillators. Contrary to previous works, this solution does not rely upon power set-points, so that implementation for operation in non-rated grid conditions is straightforward, without a control structure to adjust these set-points. The proposed strategy is applied to Dispatchable Virtual Oscillator and Syn-chronverter Grid-forming inverters in a Controller Hardware-In-the-Loop (CHIL) testbed. The results obtained shows that pre-synchronization is achieved in both rated and non-rated grid conditions. The results also shows that the Grid-Forming inverters are able to seamlessly transition to grid-connected operation for the studied Grid-forming strategies. © 2023 IEEE.
