Heuristic-Based Recommendation System for Dealing with Abnormal Situations in Industrial Applications

The effective management of process deviations and abnormal events depends on operational actions in providing the appropriate responses to each situation. Applications with requirements focused on the provision of resources tend to be handled by a human-machine interface (HMI) along with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). Process reliability is achieved if the operation ensures that actions will be performed according to the required response and priority levels. This paper presents a novel architecture entitled the heuristic-based recommendation system (HB-RS). The main goal is to provide resources capable of streamlining the process of actively handling abnormal situations. For recommendation purposes, the use of probabilistic networks is proposed, which are well suited to represent uncertainty elements present in engineering applications. To create the inference mechanism for these systems, a multi-entity Bayesian network (MEBN) is proposed, highlighting the importance of semantic characterization via knowledge-based, probabilistic graphical model formalism, which is closely linked to the modeling paradigm in which we can predict situations. The developed capabilities have been applied to a real case study in the operation of a metro train system, and the results obtained indicate the value of the proposed method. A modeling approach of EFT faults on in-vehicle communication protocols supported by FTA analysis

This paper explores the fault susceptibility of in-vehicle communication protocols. It proposes integrating aspect-oriented concepts to model common faults in the design phases of embedded systems and faults as non-functional requirements NFR. An analytical case study was conducted considering the tests of electrical fast transients (EFT) injection presented in previous works and based on data collected during these experiments. A fault tree analysis was conducted to determine the effect of the faults in the networked control system. Results based on a single-time approach reveal adverse effects (CAN: 0.622, CAN-FD: 0.352, FlexRay: 0.730). The research contributes to mitigating the impact of EFT faults on in-vehicle communication networks, enabling more specific fault analysis.

A wideband black-box model is proposed to represent the transient response of an inductive voltage transformer used in 15-kV class distribution systems in Brazil. The proposed model is used to evaluate the surge transfer characteristics of the voltage transformer considering different loads for the application of a step-like impulse voltage at primary side. The model is built as a Norton-type equivalent circuit that is valid from 10 Hz to 10 MHz. It is demonstrated that the model is able to accurately reproduce the transient waveforms measured at the transformer secondary side for the application of impulse voltages at the primary side in all tested cases. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper evaluates the behavior of harmonic filters subjected to overcurrents during energization. Statistical studies were carried out in ATPDraw considering different techniques to estimate the magnitude of inrush currents, one based on a true RMS estimator and another based on a 60-Hz Fourier filter phasor estimator. The results show that the theoretical limits of the currents used as reference to the overcurrent protection settings presented in literature were consistently defined in the evaluated cases, but that the selection of the decay time could be improved. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a Digital-to-Time Converter (DTC) based on a low-cost FPGA platform, utilizing the Vernier with oscillators architecture. A DTC is a circuit that converts digital information into a very accurate time output. The proposed Vernier DTC is implemented on an Altera Cyclone III FPGA chip and features tunable resolution through the periodic relationships between two PLL-generated signals. The linearity of the system was measured for a resolution of 990 ps, showing DNL and INL values of −0.41 to +0.54 and −0.82 to +0.17, respectively. It has a range of 99 ns and an estimated power consumption of 89 mW. Furthermore, measurements demonstrate that the system achieves a maximum resolution of 12.5 ps, utilizing only 2% of the FPGA resources.

This article aims to present a methodology for adaptive control of a boost converter through two loops based on a Model Reference. This methodology makes it possible to reduce the input capacitance of the boost converter, increasing the response speed and consequently the efficiency of tracking the maximum power point. In the introduction section, the problem involving the reduction of input capacitance in boost converters is presented. In the next sections, mathematical modeling of the converter is carried out, and a model for voltage transfer function related to inductor’s current was obtained, and finaly a model for current transfer funcion related to duty-cycle. The last section presents simulation results, demonstrating the stability of controller under several parametrics variations. Finnaly, a comparison among an adaptive controller and a classical controller was presented.

This paper proposes a reconfiguration for a single-phase, double conversion uninterruptible power supply (UPS). With the addition of two static switches to the original circuit, the UPS mitigates the ripple in the current, through battery discharge performed by two legs. Other than these switches, the circuit topology is preserved. The preliminary results show a satisfactory level of ripples for the inductor current and suitable power quality for the output voltage. © 2023 IEEE.

Some of the key requirements and trends in power electronics in recent years include improving efficiency as well as providing a energy quality while using a converter with high power density and long lifetime. Following these tendencies, multilevel T-type converters have the potential to improve the efficiency and performance of power conversion systems, especially in the renewable energy industry. A new multilevel converter with split-inductors is proposed, that offers dead-time elimination, shoot-through protection, ringing suppression and improved efficiency. Since the split-inductors are always connected in series with the switches, the protection against shoot-through is achieved by regulating the circulating current, eliminating the need for dead-time. Simulation and experimental results were shown to prove the functionality of the proposed converter.

This paper proposes a discrete-time Model Reference Adaptive Controller (MRAC), applied to a Half-Bridge synchronous buck converter for charging batteries. The system uses an LCL filter that interfaces the power converter and the batteries. A virtual plant method is proposed for better transitory response of the adaptive control system. The model reference utilizes a reduced order, to simplify the project of the adaptive controller. Simulation results are presented for validation of the control project. © 2024 IEEE.

This work presents the use of fiber optic sensors, based on Bragg gratings, for monitoring and analyzing the thermal behavior of the cells of a photovoltaic module, used to verify the start and end of operation of a solar water pumping system. Sixteen fiber Bragg grating sensors (FBGs) were used, arranged on the front face of the module, allowing the monitoring of the temperature of sixteen cells during the operation of the water pumping system. Due to the fact that the FBG sensors are inscribed in a single-mode fiber segment, they have the particularities of reduced size and weight, resulting in a minimum of shading on the module, making it possible to study the impact of thermal variations caused by environmental and electrical factors in the pumping system of water and thereby verifying its performance and possible potentialities of its use, such as the study of the beginning and end of the water pumping operation. The system started operating above 10.92 W and solar irradiance in the range of 358.24 W/m². It demonstrated that at powers below 10.68 W the solar module could not provide enough energy for the pump. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
