This paper presents a modified Vivaldi antipodal antenna using air-filled RSIW technology for UWB applications. The structure has a triangular slot edge, extending the bandwidth and increasing the gain. A prototype of the modified antenna was simulated and fabricated. The measured results show reasonable agreement with simulations, validating the design procedure. The proposed antenna offers a low-cost, easy-to-manufacture and compact solution. Additionally, improvements in performance were observed, including a 1 GHz increase in bandwidth and an additional 1.58 dB in gain, compared to the antenna using only the RSIW technology. © 2024 IEEE.

Ancient Japanese manuscripts are a valuable cultural heritage that allows us to understand the culture and values of the past. However, due to preservation over hundreds of years, stains result in antique manuscripts, and they cause low readability and loss of contents to the manuscripts. Considering preserving these assets through virtual restoration, we propose a two-stage stain reduction based on Denoising Diffusion Restoration Models (DDRM). The stain reduction proceeds by combining removing background by the binarization and reconstruction of before-processing images by DDRM. In addition, the sequential conducting that contains patches of book pages and entire them leads to preserving local information and ensuring consistency across the pages. Generation results are qualitatively improved and more realistic than traditional binarization. Also, the proposal method is evaluated by two aspects, the stain reduction metrics and preserving characters metrics. The evaluation result shows our proposal is more effective and achieves higher restoration quality than conventional binarization. © 2024 IEEE.

The world has been experiencing a fast change in the production and use of electrical energy. The electric power system is fast changing from the conventional centralized generation to a more distributed generation (DG) with renewable energy sources installed near the consumers. The evolution of DG paves the way for the concept of grid-forming converters improving voltage and frequency stability in microgrids (MGs) and islanded applications, due to the growth of inverter-based resources. In islanded MG, power quality is a concern due to the presence of disturbing loads and possible resonance issues encountered with multiple electronically interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs) and loads. The present work proposes the application of the Zero Harmonic Distortion Converter (ZHD) as a grid-forming converter due to its inherently sinusoidal voltage source characteristic without the need of capacitive filtering elements that negatively impact in costs, efficiency, size and can be a source of resonances issues. These features are achieved by the proper combination of harmonic cancellation in a three-winding transformer and harmonic elimination using the Selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (SHE PWM). Simulation results show the ZHD converter setting voltage and frequency to an islanded microgrid, delivering sinusoidal voltage waveforms even in the presence of nonlinear loads. The converter is able to maintain the voltage distortion below the IEEE 519 limits by respecting the current harmonic limits imposed by the same standard. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, a multi-satellite cooperation architecture for satellite-terrestrial communications is studied with the dense constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Moreover, beam hopping (BH) and frequency allocation enable a flexible solution for the non-uniform geographical distribution of communications, which are optimized to improve the performance and avoid interference in satellite-terrestrial communications. The total problem for maximizing the networking throughput and ensuring the delay fairness is decomposed into two sub-problems, in which the deep reinforcement learning is utilized to determine the BH pattern, and the frequency allocation among beams is implemented by the majorization-minimization algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method obtains a 13.0% improvement in throughput compared with the original benchmark, while the delay fairness can be ensured by the iterative solution of the two sub-problems. © 2024 IEEE.

Cognitive scientists believe adaptable intelligent agents like humans perform reasoning through learned causal mental simulations of agents and environments. The problem of learning such simulations is called predictive world modeling. Recently, reinforcement learning (RL) agents leveraging world models have achieved SOTA performance in game environments. However, understanding how to apply the world modeling approach in complex real-world environments relevant to mobile robots remains an open question. In this paper, we present a framework for learning a probabilistic predictive world model for real-world road environments. We implement the model using a hierarchical VAE (HVAE) capable of predicting a diverse set of fully observed plausible worlds from accumulated sensor observations. While prior HVAE methods require complete states as ground truth for learning, we present a novel sequential training method to allow HVAEs to learn to predict complete states from partially observed states only. We experimentally demonstrate accurate spatial structure prediction of deterministic regions achieving 96.21 IoU, and close the gap to perfect prediction by 62 % for stochastic regions using the best prediction. By extending HVAEs to cases where complete ground truth states do not exist, we facilitate continual learning of spatial prediction as a step towards realizing explainable and comprehensive predictive world models for real-world mobile robotics applications. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are used in a multitude of applications including portable consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and large-scale energy storage systems. The development of an optimal charging algorithm for the management of charging time and temperature rise is crucial for maximizing the life of Li-ion batteries. Thus, we introduced a charging algorithm based on model predictive control. The incorporation of the model in battery optimization control offers significant benefits, particularly in computational efficiency. A comparative analysis with the commonly used constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) charging method indicated that the proposed algorithm enhanced charging speed and reduced temperature rise significantly. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we design a simplified model of a reflection-type phase shifter (RTPS) using the magic-T proposed in previous study. The proposed magic-T aims to achieve a compact, wideband RTPS with low insertion loss. The magic-T satisfying these criteria is designed, combined with a ring-type T- divider transitioning from microstrip to coplanar strips (CPS). A RTPS is designed using this magic-T. The RTPS makes a 90° phase difference in the two arms. In this paper, to simplify the design, this section is implemented using a λ/4 delay line. The bandwidth of the RTPS is 45%, with S 11 less than -10 dB, and the phase shift is 122.3°. The RTPS is used a dipole array antenna. The bandwidth of the proposed array antenna is over 12%, with S 11 less than -10 dB, and the phase shift is 38°.

Wireless-powered energy harvesting has been employed in various Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Optimizing low power consumption and ensuring the security of confidential information have become critical points. In this paper, the proposed circuit presents a stable power consumption and supply current in various input transition logics. The current passes in each input transition logic at the function block have been uniformized to reduce the current and energy fluctuation. The different power clock frequencies and various load capacitances have been evaluated. The current and energy fluctuation has been reduced significantly from the conventional adiabatic logic circuit. The bipolar sinusoidal from an RF signal can be converted to unipolar by a diode-connected PMOS transistor for supplying energy to an adiabatic circuit.

In this work, we study a system with a sensor forwarding status update to the receiver through an error-prone channel, and the receiver sends the transmission results to the sensor via a reliable link. We assume both transmission links suffer from random delays. We use Age of Information (AoI) to measure the freshness of the status information at the receiver. Our goal is to design a sampling policy that minimizes the expected time average AoI when the channel statistics are unknown. The problem is reformulated into a renewal-reward process optimization, and an online algorithm based on the Robbins-Monro algorithm is proposed. We prove that when the forward and backward transmission delays are bounded, the AoI difference between the online algorithm and the optimal policy decays with rate O(ln K/K), where K is the number of successful transmissions. Simulation results validate the performance of our proposed algorithm. © 2023 IFIP.
