In this work, a portable, lightweight and flexible automatic data acquisition system, easily adaptable to instrumental tests of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLC) samples of different parameter magnitudes is proposed and tested. The system can be configured to automatically acquire the electrical data to be used later in the modeling and characterization of the supercapacitors (SCs). The system consists mainly of a dedicated single-board computer that uses a laptop as a console and a custom electronic circuit that is easy to adapt. The experimental results and simulations are presented to show the applicability of the system. © 2021 IEEE.

In order to improve the desalination effectiveness of a capacitive deionization system, graphite felt (GF) electrodes were modified by TiO2 and MoS2 thin films deposition to enhance the wettability and electrochemical characteristics. The influence of varied synthesis concentration ratios of precursor on the proportion of the 1T and 2H phases in MoS2 was investigated by electrochemistry and desalination tests. The results demonstrated that depositing MoS2 on GF effectively alleviated the agglomeration problem. An enhanced effect was found when the 1T phase to 2H phase ratio was 1:1. This ratio facilitated in the rapid transport of electrolytic ions and electrons across the electrode surface, resulting in high electrochemical performance. The MoS2/TiO2/GF electrodes exhibited a specific capacitance value of 257.9 F/g, a desalination efficiency of 34.3 % and a desalination capacity of 40.96 mg/g. After 50 repeated desalination tests, a desalination retention rate of 92.7 % was obtained. The research results verified that the MoS2/TiO2/GF electrodes have high desalination efficiency and long-term stability, meriting its great potential in the future development of water purification. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

This paper presents a novel algorithm for reachability analysis of nonlinear discrete-time systems. The proposed method combines constrained zonotopes (CZs) with polyhedral relaxations of factorable representations of nonlinear functions to propagate CZs through nonlinear functions, which is normally done using conservative linearization techniques. The new propagation method provides better approximations than those resulting from linearization procedures, leading to significant improvements in the computation of reachable sets in comparison to other CZ methods from the literature. Numerical examples highlight the advantages of the proposed algorithm.

The uncertainty of the sensing target brings great challenge to the beamforming design of the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. To address this issue, we model the scattering coefficient and azimuth angle of the target as random variables and introduce a novel metric, expected detection probability (EPd), to quantify the average detection performance from a Bayesian perspective. Furthermore, we design a Bayesian beamforming scheme to optimize the expected detection probability under the limited power budget and communication performance constraints. A successive convex approximation and semidefinite relaxation based (SCA-SDR) algorithm is developed for the complicated non-convex optimization problem corresponding to the beamforming scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms other benchmarks and exhibits robust detection performance when parameters of the target are unknown and random. Human-in-the-loop cyber-physical Systems use data from various sources to provide valuable assistance to users, but privacy concerns arise when sensitive information is shared. Federated Learning is a promising solution that enables the processing of user data without sharing sensitive information. While this method holds great potential, its efficacy in detecting sleep problems remains an open question. In this way, using a real-world dataset application, our study meticulously evaluates and comprehends the impact of incorporating Federated Learning on sleep detection. Our study evaluates the impact of incorporating Federated Learning on sleep detection and compares it with traditional Machine Learning models. Our findings reveal that our approach delivers accurate sleep detection results over 84% on par with conventional techniques. Our results emphasize the critical importance of handling human error inputs, as this factor significantly influences the accuracy of results in both methods.

This work proposes a fault mitigation strategy for Dispatchable Virtual Oscilator (dVOC) grid-forming (GFM) controlled inverters operating in ultra-weak grid scenarios, i.e., with Short Circuit Ratio (SCR) close to 1. The proposed strategy enables the operation of the dVOC-based GFM inverter with SCR <1 and with power angle δ in four-quadrant range during high impedance faults. This is achieved by operating the inverter with constant amplitude voltage and regulating δ using only local measurements. The proposed strategy is validated by Controller-Hardware-in-Loop results using industry-grade hardware.

Objective: Glucose homeostasis is the only way to manage diabetic progression as all medications used do not cure diabetes. This study was aimed at verifying the feasibility of lowering glucose with non-invasive ultrasonic stimulation. Methods: The ultrasonic device was homemade and controlled via a mobile application on the smartphone. Diabetes was induced in Sprague–Dawley rats through high-fat diets followed by streptozotocin injection. The treated acupoint CV12 was at the middle of the xiphoid and umbilicus of the diabetic rats. Parameters of ultrasonic stimulation were an operating frequency of 1 MHz, pulse repetition frequency of 15 Hz, duty cycle of 10% and sonication time of 30 min for a single treatment. It has been a long-standing question whether cosmic rays promote the triggering of lightning and how cosmic-ray air showers interact with the electric field of thunderclouds. The strong electric field in the thunderclouds accelerates electrons to the relativistic regime, of which seed electrons are thought to be supplied from cosmic-ray air shower. Such relativistic electrons emit bremsstrahlung photons in gamma rays, which have been detected by on-ground measurements called gamma-ray glows. Low-altitude winter thunderstorm in Japan provides an ideal environment for observations of gamma-ray glows. We newly launched the citizen science "Thundercloud Project" to construct a multi-point radiation mapping campaign for glows from winter thunderstorms around Kanazawa, Japan. We developed a new handy radiation monitor and shipped about 60 detectors to citizen supporters. The radiation data are stored in the microSD cards in the detectors, and a part of them is remotely sent to the web server so that researchers and supporters can watch the real-time data. In addition, an automatic alert is sent to public Twitter from the server when a glow is detected. The purpose of this project is (1) to characterize the methodological condition of electron acceleration, (2) to investigate whether accelerated relativistic electrons can enhance the chance of the initiation of lightning discharges, and (3) to find a new way of the citizen science to join in the cutting edge science in the physics field. Here we report this growing citizen science project and examples of successful gamma-ray glow observations. Our first scientific result from this citizen science project was published in Tsurumi et al., GRL 2023 [1], where we reported lightning discharges started in or near the electron acceleration site of a gamma-ray glow. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

In modern edge systems, the demand for data processing for complex DNN tasks, is rapidly increasing. To address this, various compression schemes have been proposed to enable on-device AI while meeting the strictpower and storage constraints. However, despite these advancements, the compatibility of the compression methods with edge device memory(LPDDR), has not been thoroughly investigated. LPDDR operates at low voltage and faces reliability challenges, which is particularly concerning for applications where accuracy is critical, such as ADAS or medical devices. To address these concerns, ECC engine, known as IECC, is employed within each LPDDR bank. While IECC improves reliability, it also incurs performance penalties due to Read-Modify-Write(RMW) operations and parity storage overheads. This paper introduces RELIA, a DNN weight compression scheme with three-stage protection, aimed at enabling power-efficient and reliable DNN operations in mobile environments. RELIA reduces the operation granularity of the IECC engine from SEC(136,128) to SEC(72,64), eliminating RMW overhead. Additionally, it proposes SEC-FOEC(72,64) scheme that can correct 99.97% of LPDDR errors. To mitigate the added storage overhead, compression scheme based on DNN weight characteristics is introduced. Experimental results show RELIA reduces power, cycle, energy, and storage by 17.35%, 13.2%, 32.7%, and 23.6%, respectively, while offering superior reliability. © 2025, The Authors.
