We have succeeded in making an invisible digital image on a metal substrate using periodic repeatability by thin-film interference of niobium oxides. Although this digital information is invisible in the visible light range, but detectable in the infrared light range. This technology has a potential to be applied to anti-counterfeiting and traceability. © 2022 ITE and SID.

The high penetration of renewable energy sources poses a challenge to stability of power systems, particularly microgrids, which are more vulnerable due to their small capacity and low inertia. To address instability, system components and their interactions need to be represented to more efficiently understand and optimize complex systems. Agent-based modeling enables autonomous operation and collaborative interaction, making the system adaptable to changes efficiently, making it ideal for microgrid management. In this paper, an agent-based microgrid simulation model is proposed. By independently representing microgrid components such as generators, energy storage systems (ESS), loads, environments and controllers, models can dynamically simulate the behavior of power systems, respond to system changes in real time. To validate the proposed model, experiments are conducted based on IEEE 13 bus system, and the results show that with the use of ESS, the frequency peak is reduced from over 62 Hz to around 60 Hz. In the case of sudden demand fluctuations, the frequency remains relatively stable, staying close to 60 Hz. The model demonstrates flexibility and robustness in managing renewable energy fluctuations and sudden load changes.

Biogas generated from urban solid waste degradation in landfills is composed of various types of gases, some of them are very toxic and harmful to the health of both humans and animals, and contribute directly to global warming as well. In this way, the monitoring of biogas concentration in landfills and their surroundings is very important because this can assess the air contamination around landfills, as well as to propose means to minimize it. In this work, an electronic nose for gas identification and measurement of gases present in landfill biogas using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is introduced. The ANN training data have been collected by the developed electronic nose, which consisted on a set of low-cost gas sensors and on a signal acquisition system controlled by the LabViewsoftware. After the ANN training, a neural architecture has been obtained and implemented in a microcontrolled digital system to measure different gas concentrations, mainly, methane. The main results of the proposed ANN-based electronic Nose show that it was possible to measure the gases concentrations, with RMSE less than 1%, for the most of target gases, confirming the accuracy of the developed system.

Stator on-line resistance estimation is often used, among others techniques, for thermal monitoring, flux and torque estimation in induction motor high performance drives. Dc current injection methods are some of the most well succeeded techniques found in literature for this purpose. In spite of this, the dc component added gives rise to oscillation in the electromagnetic torque, which can disturb the driven load and the industrial process controlled by the drive. In order to attenuate this component, a second-order current harmonic injection can be used. However, when proportional-integral controllers are employed, four additional transformations are required. This paper proposed a control scheme based on adaptive resonant control, that presents the advantage of reducing computational requirements, since additional transformations are not required. The results show that similar performance with reduced complexity are accomplished. © 2021 IEEE.

Holographic multiple-input-multiple output (HMIMO), which is enabled by large-scale antenna arrays with quasi-continuous apertures, is expected to be an important technology in the forthcoming 6G wireless network. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-based antennas provide an energy-efficient solution for implementing HMIMO. Most existing works in this area focus on single-polarized RIS-enabled HMIMO, where the RIS can only reflect signals in one polarization towards users and signals in the other polarization cannot be received by intended users, leading to degraded data rate. To improve multiplexing performance, in this paper, we consider a dual-polarized RIS-enabled single-user HMIMO network, aiming to optimize power allocations across polarizations and analyze corresponding maximum system capacity. However, due to interference between different polarizations, the dual-polarized system cannot be simply decomposed into two independent single-polarized ones. Therefore, existing methods developed for the single-polarized system cannot be directly applied, which makes the optimization and analysis of the dual-polarized system challenging. To cope with this issue, we derive an asymptotically tight upper bound on the ergodic capacity, based on which the power allocations across two polarizations are optimized. Potential gains achievable with such dual-polarized RIS are analyzed. Numerical results verify our analysis. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Providing robust prognosis predictions for cancers with limited data samples remains a challenge for precision oncology. In this study, we propose a novel approach that combines multi-task learning (MTL) and graph neural networks (GNNs) to address this issue. By representing gene-gene interactions as a graph network, our approach leverages multi-task learning to effectively capture the relationships of genes relevant to the oncogenesis and progression of breast, lung, and colon cancer. We demonstrate that our approach improves the cancer prognosis prediction for cancers with fewer samples, such as colon adenocarcinoma, by leveraging the shared gene-gene interactions across different cancer types, obtaining increases in the area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) of 24%. Our work contributes to the field of smart healthcare by demonstrating the potential of MTL and GNNs for enhancing cancer prognosis prediction, even with limited data samples.

Drought propagation in an Andean basin in South America: a spatio-temporal analysis approach with monitoring indices

Drought is a climatic phenomenon that has increased in severity over time. This study analyzed drought spread in the Alto Patía basin (13,047 km2) in South America, applying the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Vegetation Health Index (VHI), and Streamflow Drought Index (SDI) to assess meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological drought, respectively. Synchronous and asynchronous correlations were estimated, and Wavelet analysis was conducted to verify relationships among drought types. Results show that the lag between drought types varies based on the intensity, temporal continuity, and spatial extent of meteorological drought. A lag of zero months (1–2 months) was observed between meteorological and hydrological drought when moderate (severe) meteorological drought partially (fully) covers the basin. Agricultural drought, however, does not always correspond to meteorological drought during isolated rainfall events. As the first study in Colombia to systematically connect these drought types, this research addresses a gap in understanding how drought impacts progress across systems in regions with complex rainfall patterns. These findings offer critical insights into the interdependencies among drought types, supporting enhanced drought monitoring and early warning systems in similar climatic regions. By identifying specific lags between meteorological and hydrological droughts, this study provides practical guidance for land management, water conservation, and crop planning, offering a foundation for future research on drought resilience strategies.

With the rapid advancement of intelligent IoT services, the need for high-quality and efficient wireless communication has become increasingly critical for information exchanges and collaborations among intelligent edge devices such as autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), robots in smart factories, and surveillance cameras, etc., Federated Learning (FL) is a promising distributed learning framework by exploring the computation capability on edge devices while protecting data privacy of users. On the other hand, Over-the-Air (OTA) computation techniques is a new paradigm of integrated computation and communication. OTA based FL (OTA-FL) can enhance spectrum efficiency by leveraging the superposition properties of wireless channels for model aggregations. The implementation of OTA-FL on edge devices can further protect user data privacy for clients, improve the throughput of inter-device communications, and enhance the distributed learning performance. However, despite these advantages, the convergence of OTA-FL systems remain vulnerable to model poisoning attacks, presenting significant challenges. In this study, we address these vulnerabilities by proposing a two-phase detection mechanism that secures OTA-FL system while preserving high spectral efficiency. Our simulation results demonstrate that under varying conditions, our approach can make distributed learning more secure and communication-efficient.
