This research-to-practice paper describes developing and analyzing state-of-the-art smart boots created by combining CAD technology and advanced 3D printing techniques to attract students in bio-engineering and related fields. The primary objective of this innovative immobilization boot is to expedite fracture recovery phases through an ergonomic design to ensure optimal patient comfort during its use. Technological solutions are crucial in aiding the rehabilitation process for fractures caused by falls, heavy lifting, or rotational trauma. However, cost and comfort-related issues persist, underscoring the need for alternative approaches. This research addresses these challenges and delves into the broader implications of fracture treatment, catalyzing future projects and investigations in bioengineering. Additionally, this study serves as an educational tool that sparks the interest of high school and engineering students, promoting multidisciplinary collaboration in innovation. By involving students in specialized courses covering 3D design, human bone anatomy, biology, and materials science, this initiative empowers them to deepen their knowledge and develop new technologies to address bone injury problems. Material analyses include evaluating the type of material depending on the fracture site, such as PLA for printing and cotton and silicone gel for the midsection between the splint and the body. This research aims to advance our understanding of the type of fracture, the methods associated with their treatment, and tissue repair processes during bone callus formation. To summarize, this multidisciplinary approach drives advancements in bio-engineering and related fields, aiming to enhance patient outcomes and inspire students to pursue further research in bio-engineering and related fields. This work presents the development of an analytical technique for the synthesis of non-uniform phase distribution for a cylindrical aperture with a cosecant-squared radiation pattern. Analytical results for the phase distributions are presented. Using the Aperture Method, the radiation patterns for these distributions are computationally calculated.

RDVC: Efficient Deep Video Compression with Regulable Rate and Complexity Optimization

Deep video coding has paved a way to break through the performance bottleneck of reigning hybrid video coding. However, unlike hybrid video codecs, existing deep video codecs cannot offer both flexible rates and regulable complexities within one single codec, which limits their applications. In this paper, we propose a Regulable Deep Video Codec (RDVC) to address the above issue. First, we propose an Adaptive Feature Compression (AFC) network that generates variable rates while ensuring Rate-Distortion (RD) performance. The network introduces a two-stage coarse-to-fine rate adjustment that can be controlled by a user-specified rate level. Second, we propose a Spatio-Temporal Feature Propagation (STFP) mechanism to provide high-quality reference information for AFC process. Third, we also utilize slimmable convolutional components in our framework to adjust decoding complexity constrained by user configuration. Experimental results demonstrate that RDVC can adjust the codec structure flexibly according to different user configurations while maintaining advanced performance. On average, it reduces the bit-per-pixel (bpp) by 9.35%/58.12% while maintaining the same PSNR/MS-SSIM as the reference software VTM-13.2. This paper presents a novel method for calculating the positive largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE) using only SPICE-like programs. The LLE is a measure of the rate of divergence of nearby trajectories in phase space and is an important indicator of chaotic behavior. The proposed method calculates the LLE directly from systems represented in schematic circuits, inspired by interval extensions that exploit divergent trajectories to calculate the lower-bound error. The exponent is obtained from the slope of the line derived from the lower-bound error, using a differential amplifier to quantify it, along with a straightforward linear fit to the logarithm of the divergence of two circuits’ trajectories. This approach is unique as it requires only user skills in SPICE-like programs, unlike most other approaches, providing a simple, efficient, and accurate way to analyze and characterize chaotic dynamics. Results demonstrate that the suggested method successfully estimated the LLE for two well-known systems.

Novel wireless communication systems such as IoT devices and B5G are widely spreading, high performance electrically small antennas which is wireless interface of RF module is strongly demanded. As relationship between miniaturization of antenna and realization of high performance is trade-off, research and development for electrically small antennas are important. Though spherical helix antennas have been proposed as antennas that the size is possible to reduction by theoretical limitation, practical improvement of the antenna performance is required. This paper denotes broadbanding of the hemispherical helix antennas using an equivalent circuit with loss factor, and discuss the affects of loss factor on the wideband characteristics.

Distinct selectivity to the spin angular momenta of photons has garnered significant attention in recent years, for its relevance in basic science and for imaging and sensing applications. While nonlocal metasurfaces with strong chiral responses to the incident light have been reported, these responses are typically limited to a narrow range of incident angles. In this study, we demonstrate a nonlocal metasurface that showcases strong chirality, characterized by circular dichroism (∼0.6), over a wide range of incident angles ±5°. Its quality factor, circular dichroism and resonant frequency can be optimized by design. These findings pave the way to further advance the development of valley-selective optical cavities and augmented reality applications.

In the smart city, high-density deployment of consumer electronics (CE) may lead to mutual interference, resulting in imperfect estimation of the channel state information (CSI). To tackle the problem, this paper proposes a split learning-based robust resource allocation for CEs in smart cities. We constructed an interference hypergraph model and divided resource allocation conflicts in overlapping areas into multiple virtual sub-cells (VSCs) to reduce the impact of mutual interference for the CSI. Then, we take into account the imperfect CSI and design a robust optimization model to maximize the throughput of the network in the VSCs. Due to the imperfections of CSI and the introduction of random channel parameters, solving robust optimization models is challenging. Hence, we propose the split robust learning algorithm based on interference hypergraph (SRLA-IH), which utilizes split learning theory to learn models and obtain more accurate uncertainty sets, effectively reducing the problems caused by imperfect CSI in smart cities. Numerical results demonstrate that compared with other algorithms, our proposed algorithm can achieve excellent network throughput and improve resource allocation utilization even under imperfect CSI. © 2025 IEEE.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are widely used in various applications, from inspection and surveillance to transportation and delivery. Navigating UAVs in complex 3D environments is a challenging task that requires robust and efficient decision-making algorithms. This paper presents a novel approach to UAV navigation in 3D environments using a Curriculum-based Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) approach. The proposed method utilizes a deep neural network to model the UAV’s decision-making process and to learn a mapping from the state space to the action space. The learning process is guided by a reinforcement signal that reflects the performance of the UAV in terms of reaching its target while avoiding obstacles and with energy efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed method has a positive trade off when compared to the baseline algorithm. The proposed method was able to perform well in environments with a state space size of 22 millions, allowing the usage in big environments or in maps with high resolution. The results demonstrate the potential of DRL for enabling UAVs to operate effectively in complex environments.

Fano line shapes generated by an excitonic layer in attenuated-total-reflection geometry and application to refractive-index sensing

Reflectance, transmittance, and absorptance spectra of the Kretschmann–Raether attenuated total reflection configuration consisting of a BK7 prism, a nonmetallic excitonic layer, and a surrounding medium are calculated. For angles of incidence below the critical angle of total reflection, the reflectance and transmittance spectra normalized to background spectra exhibit Fano line shapes. Under the total reflection condition, nearly perfect absorption is achieved. The Fano line shape of the normalized reflectance spectrum is found to depend strongly on the refractive index of the surrounding medium, thus opening up a scheme of refractive index detection based on line shape analyses.
