A Peltier type water content sensor was developed to measure media with high nutrient concentrations. The water content sensor using temperature has the advantage that the effect of ion concentration is small compared to time-domain-reflectometry and capacitance-type sensors. Compared to other superheat sensors that measure heat conduction time, proposed sensor had the advantages of shorter measurement time because it measured specific heat and no change of average temperature of the plant medium because heating and cooling are performed simultaneously. In addition, in order to detect temperature changes with high sensitivity, we developed a driving method that repeats heating and cooling, and realized a circuit that accumulates temperature change signals. Experiments on a model soil were successful in obtaining a change of 186 mV per 10% water content. © 2023 IEEJ.

The gas circuit breakers have the problem of re-ignition after current zero. The instantaneous voltage drop causes enormous damage in the case of current interruption failure. Therefore, it is the responsibility of circuit breaker to interrupt the current quickly and reliably. Efficient cooling of the arc temperature is important in order to prevent the re-ignition caused by the transient recovery voltage. In this paper, the arc temperature as a function of opening electrodes timing was analyzed. As a result, the three-dimensional transition of arc temperature to current zero for each current interruption timing at each sine wave time was obtained. In addition, the opening electrodes timing that decreases the arc conductance at current zero was elucidated. © 2023 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

A Two-Phase Interleaved Bidirectional DC-DC Converter With Asymmetrical Duty Limit Control for Wide-Range DC-Bus Voltage Applications

The two-phase interleaved charge-pump bidirectional dc/dc converter topology (ICPBDC) exhibits an excellent performance in terms of enhanced voltage gain, reduced conduction loss and switch stress, fast transient response, and high power density. However, the applicability of ICPBDC topology is restricted because of its operating duty cycle. This article presents a cost-effective asymmetrical duty limit control (DLC) strategy for wide-range DC-bus voltage and full operating range, which includes bidirectional power flow and inherent current-balancing characteristics. The realization of charge and discharge modes of ICPBDC with asymmetrical DLC strategy are demonstrated for an electric vehicle-connected DC-microgrid (EV-DCMG) with wide-range DC-bus voltage. Furthermore, the operating principles, steady-state analyses, and closed-loop control of the converter are illustrated. Finally, a prototype with 500 W power rating has been implemented which verifies a wide voltage gain range for this converter between the adjustable DC-bus voltage (200-380 V) and the constant low-side voltage (60 V). In both charge and discharge modes, the converter achieves maximum efficiencies above 97.51%. The experimental results also validate the feasibility of the proposed concept. © 2023 IEEE.

Double remnant polarization (2Pr values are increased significantly from 17.1μC/cm2 to 39.9μC/cm2 by reducing the TiNx interfacial capping layer (ICL) thickness from 3 nm to 1 nm in the Ru/TiNx/Hf0.5 Zr0.5O2(HZO)/TiN structure owing to lower monoclinic (m) phase with respect to orthorhombic (o) plus rhombohedral (r) phases. These phases are observed by geometrical phase analysis (GPA) of high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images. An optimized 2 nm TiNx ICL ferroelectric memory shows lowest fatigue and mechanism is higher m-phase starting to grow from the HZO/TiN BE interface, which is evidenced in the HRTEM image after long endurance of 1011 cycles under high ±4 MV/cm, 0.5μs (remaining higher 2Pr value of 20μC/cm2). © 1980-2012 IEEE.

Reinforcement learning (RL) methods have been intensively investigated for Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) problems. Considering the impracticality of the conventional train-test two-phase process in existing research, this paper adopts a continuous learning approach and addresses two challenges: startup and adaptation. To address these challenges, an Intersection Dynamics-Aware DQN (IDA-DQN) algorithm together with a Backward Intersection Dynamics Model (BIDM) is proposed. IDA-DQN extends the Deep Q-Network (DQN) by incorporating the learning and utilizing of BIDM to reduce reliance on real-world interactions. The proposed BIDM is designed to replenish lane-level vehicle counts using a backward approach, aiding in understanding the dynamics of isolated intersections and in supplementing synthetic samples in addition to real-world samples. Synthetic samples are then used by IDA-DQN to enhance its startup efficiency and adaptability. Through simulation experiments across various demand scenarios, the efficacy of IDA-DQN is validated, particularly demonstrating a fast startup effect with a speed increase of up to 47.53% at moderate traffic levels. © 2024 IEEE.

We propose a new magnetic resonance simultaneous multislice imaging (SMS) by developing our previously proposed imaging method based on the principle of holography. Different amplitude modulations for each slice are applied to separate the slice images. The slice image separation is performed using a data-driven science in which U-Nets separates the slice images using the given amplitude modulation as a cue. Simulation experiments using a real-valued and an phase-varied image model revealed the relationship between the coefficients of amplitude modulation, the number of simultaneously excited slices, and image quality. In addition, we performed image separation experiments on the holographic imaging method by approximating the excited volume region as five slice images with no gaps, and showed the feasibility of image separation. This method has the potential to be a new type of SMS.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being utilized for damage assessment in natural disasters and for search and rescue operations. Currently, the search for victims primarily relies on analyzing images captured by cameras mounted on UAVs. However, this approach has limitations when it comes to locating victims who are not within the camera's field of view. As a result, sound-based search methods are being considered. In this method, a voice message is transmitted to the disaster area through a speaker mounted on a UAV, and the presence of victims is confirmed by detecting their response using the onboard microphone of the UAV. Nevertheless, the UAV's microphone captures both the sound of the victim and the propeller rotation, posing a significant challenge in extracting the victim's voice from this combined audio. To address this issue, we propose a solution that involves generating spectrogram images of the sound mixture and the propeller sound, and extracting the human sound by subtracting them. We found that the conventional colormap was ineffective in emphasizing the human sound in the spectrogram images. To overcome this limitation, this paper introduces a new colormap based on the normal distribution. This colormap enhances human voices while attenuating propeller sounds by adjusting the mean and variance. Through the results of our experiments, we confirm that the proposed colormap effectively reduces propeller sound interference in the sound mixing and simultaneously emphasizes the voice of a disaster victim. By utilizing the proposed colormap, it becomes possible to visualize the victim's voice from the audio mixture acquired by the UAV's onboard microphone, enabling the identification of the victim. © 2023 IEEE.

Ring oscillators (ROs) are frequently used to measure bias temperature instability (BTI). However, it is difficult to accurately compare the degradation rates of different BTI phenomenon because the parasitic components depend on circuit structures. The identical circuit structure with control signals is implemented to measure different BTI phenomenon. Test chips equipped with these ROs were fabricated in a 65 nm process. From the measurement results, well-known power-law models of BTI with time exponent n = 1/6 were extracted. The identical circuit structure can compare the BTI degradation rates of different BTI phenomenon based on the identical oscillation frequency. © 2023 IEEE.

Orthogonal Constant-Amplitude Sequence Families for System Parameter Identification in Spectrally Compact OFDM

In rectangularly-pulsed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, constant-amplitude (CA) sequences are desirable to construct preamble/pilot waveforms to facilitate system parameter identification (SPI). Orthogonal CA sequences are generally preferred in various SPI applications like random-access channel identification. However, the number of conventional orthogonal CA sequences (e.g., Zadoff–Chu sequences) that can be adopted in cellular communication without causing sequence identification ambiguity is insufficient. Such insufficiency causes heavy performance degradation for SPI requiring a large number of identification sequences. Moreover, rectangularly-pulsed OFDM preamble/pilot waveforms carrying conventional CA sequences suffer from large power spectral sidelobes and thus exhibit low spectral compactness. This paper is thus motivated to develop several order-I CA sequence families which contain more orthogonal CA sequences while endowing the corresponding OFDM preamble/pilot waveforms with fast-decaying spectral sidelobes. Since more orthogonal sequences are provided, the developed order-I CA sequence families can enhance the performance characteristics in SPI requiring a large number of identification sequences over multipath channels exhibiting short-delay channel profiles, while composing spectrally compact OFDM preamble/pilot waveforms. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
