This paper presents a modified Vivaldi antipodal antenna using air-filled RSIW technology for UWB applications. The structure has a triangular slot edge, extending the bandwidth and increasing the gain. A prototype of the modified antenna was simulated and fabricated. The measured results show reasonable agreement with simulations, validating the design procedure. The proposed antenna offers a low-cost, easy-to-manufacture and compact solution. Additionally, improvements in performance were observed, including a 1 GHz increase in bandwidth and an additional 1.58 dB in gain, compared to the antenna using only the RSIW technology.

This paper deals with the problem of sampled-data gain-scheduling control design for affine quasi-LPV systems. As the control implementation is based on sample-data and its update occurs only at specific sampling instants, the state-dependent scheduling functions of the controller are piecewise continuous. This characteristic causes a mismatch between the system model and the controller parameters, namely asynchronous scheduling functions of the controller with respect to the plant during the inter-sampling behavior. To cope with this phenomenon, a polytopic description of the inter-sampling is constructed based on bounding assumptions on the scheduling functions and their time derivatives. Then, regarding a time-delay approach, a constructive and numerically implementable LMI-based synthesis condition is derived, and a convex procedure is proposed for enlarging the estimate of the region of attraction of the origin of the closed-loop system. The time-derivative bounds of the scheduling functions are explicitly accounted into the local analysis to ensure the method's implementation. The underwater Internet of Things (UIoT) is crucial in developing marine resources. However, due to the low data rate of underwater channels, it is difficult to have a central server to process data from numerous devices as using terrestrial communications. Therefore, decentralized federated learning (DFL) with communication-efficient modifications is a promising alternative to empower UIoT with artificial intelligence and collaborative training. However, existing DFL strategies rely on a carefully designed small aggregation weight when aggregating parameters from neighbor nodes to mitigate the compression error, resulting in a slow convergence rate. In addition, the effect of data compression under time-varying topologies is not considered in current DFL algorithms. In response to these problems, this work studies a DFL framework with underwater acoustic channel and time-varying topology. Firstly, considering the low data rate and dynamics of the acoustic channel, we propose a practical scheme for adaptive compression and device connectivity. Moreover, we combine data compression and the error-compensation technique with time-varying topology and propose a DFL algorithm with aggregation weights decaying over time to achieve fast convergence under non-independent and identically distributed (non-IID) data. We derive a convergence bound for the proposed algorithm with respect to compression and time-varying topology and demonstrate that it achieves the same asymptotic convergence rate as centralized FL with perfect communication. Simulation results show that, compared with DFL algorithms without decaying aggregation weights and centralized FL schemes, the proposed algorithm exhibits higher accuracy and faster convergence rate in underwater environments. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

We investigate the heating of silicon nanoparticles due to absorption of light at 1550 nm wavelength. We conclude that the strong temperature dependence of the absorption processes in silicon leads to a thermal runaway effect, destroying the particle once it reaches a critical temperature under intense irradiation. Our results bear relevance for recent proposals to use silicon particles for levitodynamics experiments.

This paper describes the low-cost manufacturing process of an evanescent wave fiber sensor platform that allows the etching of the fiber in hydrofluoric acid with the proposed 3D-printed fiber holder in an acid resistant material. The fiber holder is practical for allowing several processing procedures during its use and sensor fabrication, allowing sensor optical and electrical operation. In this work, some aspects of its characterization are presented in the optical domain showing the excitation of surface plasmons in the visible range, and also indication of its electrical operation of the thin-film as electrode.

Rapid, sensitive, multiplexed antibody detection technologies are essential for assessing vaccine efficacy and recipient immunity against viruses. As severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants continue to emerge, and the fact that novel viruses may pose potential threats in the near future, personalized vaccines can be precisely tailored to an individual’s measured immunity to help mitigate the symptoms of infection and viral spread. Here, we present giant magnetoresistive (GMR) biosensor microarrays for the quantitative multiplexed detection of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 variants. The multiplexed GMR biosensor microarrays demonstrated high sensitivity, comparable to that of the single-plex enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, enabling multiplexed measurements using blood obtained from finger pricks. Additionally, the GMR biosensor microarrays demonstrated compatibility with clinical samples and could detect variant-specific antibodies in serum, allowing for the assessment of current immunity status. Notably, an increased concentration of antibodies against the Omicron variant was clearly observed two weeks after receiving an Omicron-based booster vaccination. These results indicate that GMR biosensor microarrays offer a practical point-of-care tool for monitoring humoral immunity and guiding personalized vaccination schedules, thereby supporting immunity management against SARS-CoV-2 and future viral threats. © 2024, The Authors. Modeling of a three-phase inverter connected to the power grid and load using the power system computer-aided design (PSCAD) software was established in the study. When the three-phase inverter is connected to the power grid, the three-phase AC signal can be converted to the DC signal using the direct quadrature transformation to achieve the power and current controls. The simulation results confirmed that the PSCAD model could be implemented in the power-sharing performance between the load and the power grid.

Flexible Full-Stokes Polarization engineering by Disorder-Scrambled Metasurfaces

The ability to arbitrarily and flexibly control the polarization of light, including both the state of polarization (SoP) and the degree of polarization (DoP), is highly important for quantum optics, polarization imaging, and coherent optical communications. Although metasurfaces have shown promise in polarization control, the few studies focusing on the DoP often lack flexibility in manipulation. Here, we propose a novel approach using a disordered metasurface to flexibly convert natural light into partially polarized light, enabling independent and flexible control over all Stokes parameters. The metasurface is composed of two types of meta-atoms, uniformly distributed with specific quantity ratios, decoupling the design parameters in the process of polarization control, and allowing a one-to-one correspondence between metasurface and polarization spaces. The azimuthal and elevation angles of the SoP on the Poincaré sphere are independently controlled by the meta-atom rotation and size, while the DoP is governed by the quantity ratio. A developed algorithm determines the disordered metasurface arrangement, with theoretical calculations showing an average error of less than 3° for both the azimuthal and elevation angles and a control accuracy of ±0.05 for the DoP. Predictive World Models from Real-World Partial Observations

Cognitive scientists believe adaptable intelligent agents like humans perform reasoning through learned causal mental simulations of agents and environments. The problem of learning such simulations is called predictive world modeling. Recently, reinforcement learning (RL) agents leveraging world models have achieved SOTA performance in game environments. However, understanding how to apply the world modeling approach in complex real-world environments relevant to mobile robots remains an open question. In this paper, we present a framework for learning a probabilistic predictive world model for real-world road environments. We implement the model using a hierarchical VAE (HVAE) capable of predicting a diverse set of fully observed plausible worlds from accumulated sensor observations. While prior HVAE methods require complete states as ground truth for learning, we present a novel sequential training method to allow HVAEs to learn to predict complete states from partially observed states only. We experimentally demonstrate accurate spatial structure prediction of deterministic regions achieving 96.21 IoU, and close the gap to perfect prediction by 62 % for stochastic regions using the best prediction. By extending HVAEs to cases where complete ground truth states do not exist, we facilitate continual learning of spatial prediction as a step towards realizing explainable and comprehensive predictive world models for real-world mobile robotics applications.
