Autonomous driving technology relies heavily on sensor data for environment perception. Heterogeneous sensors such as lidar, radar, and camera have their own strengths and limitations. Therefore, relying on any single sensor would restrict the effectiveness of autonomous driving technology. However, integrating data from such heterogeneous sensors poses challenges due to differences in their representations. This article outlines a deep learning network aimed at designing modality-agnostic multi-modal fusion architecture. We study sensor data from different modalities and learn fine-grained representations using modality-specific feature encoders independently. Then, a multimodal attention-based network (MMA-Net) is proposed to fuse the data from heterogeneous modalities. The proposed MMA-Net fuses multi-modal sensor data by jointly exploiting the inter-modality and intra-modality relationships among camera, lidar, and radar sensors. The effectiveness of the proposed multi-modal fusion architecture is demonstrated using 2-D object detection metrics through extensive experiments on a dataset generated using the CARLA simulator.

The efficient Kalman filter has been widely used in recent decades to obtain air navigation information in UAVs. However, for a good performance of the Kalman filter, the model that describes the system dynamics must not contain uncertainties. This paper presents the implementation of a robust Kalman filter to estimate the attitude, velocity, and position of UAVs. The robust filter considers uncertainties in the sensor models. A mathematical structure based on the solution of linear systems synthesizes the predictor-corrector robust estimation algorithm. The main contribution of this study is the proposed QR decomposition based on Givens rotation to solve the linear system. The simulated experiments used sensory data collected in Zürich-Switzerland and ground truth referencing attitude, velocity, and position. The offline simulation results express the effectiveness of the robust Kalman filter for this application, with a reduction of up to 18.9% in the estimation error, in relation to the standard Kalman filter. The proposal to use systolic arrays for numerical solutions has shown promise for implementation in parallel processing platforms, such as FPGAs.

An international research collaboration under IEA (the International Energy Agency) Wind TCP (Technical Collaboration programme) Task 25 (Design and Operation of Energy Systems with large amount of Variable Generation) has previously performed an international comparison analysis on the curtailment of wind and solar power in various countries/areas in the world in 2022. This paper gives a comparison overview of the curtailment rates, presented as C-E maps (curtailment as a share of VRE and power system demand). As previous statistical data was as until 2020, some data has been updated. The latest information and the future estimations of curtailment in several countries/areas are summarised, including Ireland, California and Texas in U.S., and Japan. We also discuss the possible impacts of battery storage and demand response, which may contribute to reduced wind & solar curtailment, despite very high VRE (variable renewable energy) shares.

Research has been carried out to monitor vehicle tires before they are used and can reduce damage, including overcoming vehicle fuel waste because air pressure is continuously monitored. This research aims to utilize the MPX5500DP sensor as an air pressure device, the LM35 sensor as a temperature reader, and a buzzer based on IoT to build a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The MPX5500DP and LM35 sensor inputs to the Arduino Uno microcontroller are distributed by the NodeMCU, fitted with a Wi-Fi module. The Blynk application sends and displays the data on a smartphone using the IoT-based. Based on this research, data on the percentage of errors in monitoring air pressure and tire temperature on vehicles were obtained by comparing the data to the pressure gauge and thermometer: 1—the results of the average reading of the sensor error value. MPX5500DP air pressure against pressure gauge is 5.3%. 2—the average reading of the LM35 sensor error value on the temperature thermometer is 6.8%. With this research, the air pressure and temperature in the tires can be monitored in real-time via a smartphone using the IoT-based.

Fine-tuning a large language model (LLM) using the local data of edge users can enable personalized services and applications. For privacy protection, the prevalent solution adopts distributed learning for fine-tuning and integrates low-rank adaptation (LoRA) to reduce users’ computational load. However, as the number of users increases, numerous users simultaneously communicate with the server, and multiple server-side models concurrently execute on the server, leading to significant communication congestion and memory pressure. In this paper, we propose a split learning (SL) scheme for fine-tuning LLM in wireless networks, which involves one cloud server, a small number of edge servers, and multiple users. Specifically, the pre-trained model and LoRA adapters are divided into three parts and deployed across the cloud, edge, and user sides. The training process follows the sequence of user, edge, and cloud, with forward and backward propagation achieved by transmitting activation and gradient. In each round, all edge servers and an equivalent number of users train in parallel, and only the LoRA adapters are updated. At the end of each round, all edge-side and user-side LoRA adapters are uploaded to the cloud for aggregation. Extensive simulation demonstrates that the proposed scheme can reduce peak memory usage up to 74% compared to the state-of-the-art benchmarks. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The online estimation of induction motor stator resistance is commonly used to flux and torque estimation models, thermal monitoring and efficiency estimation in high-performance induction motor drives. For this purpose, direct current (dc) injection method is a popular technique. However, the injected dc component leads to an oscillatory component in the electromagnetic torque and speed, which can affect the industrial process controlled by the drive. In this context, this paper proposes a control scheme based on adaptive resonant controller in the motor speed loop, that presents the advantage of reducing the control algorithm computational burden and provides higher attenuation to the oscillatory components when compared with other methods found in the literature. The proposal is validated through simulations in the software PLECS and experimental results in a prototype. The proposed scheme is simple to implement and is compatible with both synchronous reference frame current controllers with pulse width modulation (PWM) and current hysteresis approaches.

This paper aims to analyze the effect on power quality of a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) power system under high penetration of wind-based power generation. A set of results simulated in MATLAB/Simulink® is shown to assess different operational scenarios of a typical Brazilian FPSO, from Mero Oil Field. The floating offshore wind power penetration is varied from 10 to 50 MW and the FPSO power quality effects are reported; then the effect of increasing the umbilical distance from 12 to 150 km between the wind farm and FPSO is evaluated; and finally, the reduction in the number of gas turbine generators (3 and 2 generators) is performed. The conclusions are drawn based on steady-state and transient voltage and frequency profiles; active and reactive power flow between loads and generation; the rate of change of frequency and the minimum frequency reached under the disturbance event when a wind generation loss of 10 MW is triggered.

Renewable energy resources emerge as a sustainable alternative to augmenting the energy supply of Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) platforms. However, the increased generation based on converter-interfaced energy decreases the system-equivalent inertia constant, which becomes more susceptible to frequency deviations. This paper proposes and evaluates the performance of the combined frequency-voltage-var control to mitigate frequency variation in a typical FPSO unit with penetration of wind power systems. The control functions are communication-free and embedded in two active front-end variable frequency drives (AFE- VFDs) set on water injection pumps. The FPSO's electrical power system model is developed in MATLAB/Simulink®. Comparative results with the AFE-VFD equipped with volt-var, freq-var, and combined freq-volt-var functions are shown to highlight the merits of the proposed solution.

Deterministic switching of perpendicularly magnetized systems using spin-orbit torque (SOT) usually requires an in-plane auxiliary magnetic field, which limits its practical applications. Here, an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is introduced into perpendicularly magnetized synthetic antiferromagnetic (AFM) systems by changing the type of capping or underlayer in the [capping layer]/Co/[Pt/Ir/Pt spacer layer]/Co/[underlayer] synthetic AFM system. Field-free switching in the synthetic AFM system is observed in the cases of W, Ta, Ir22Mn78 capping layers or Ir22Mn78 underlayer. Among the synthetic AFM systems with field-free switching, the synthetic AFM system with Ir22Mn78 capping layer shows the largest dampinglike SOT efficiency, ξDL=28.1%. We also found observed large ξDL is related to the enhancement of spin absorption in antiferromagnetic Co magnetization configuration in synthetic AFM system compared to that in ferromagnetic Co magnetization configuration and the degree of enhancement increases with increasing the magnitude of interlayer exchange coupling between Co layers in synthetic AFM system. These results suggest that the synthetic AFM system is a promising building block for future nonvolatile high-speed memories and logic circuits using the spin Hall effect.
