Development of the social metacognition inventory for online collaborative argumentation: construct validity and reliability

At present, with the rapid development of the internet and the gradual promotion of online collaborative learning, the social regulation of learning is receiving increasing attention, which involves socially shared metacognition, one facet of social metacognition. To date, social regulation of learning or socially shared metacognition have been widely studied using qualitative approaches. Although a variety of scales have been developed to measure metacognition in traditional individual learning, little work has been done to develop a scale to measure social metacognition in collaborative learning contexts. This study originally developed a social metacognition inventory consisting of 24 indicators by referring to the literature for assessing beliefs of other persons (BOP), awareness of other persons’ thinking (AOPT), judgment of other persons’ emotions (JOPE), co-regulation of each other’s thinking (CREOT), and evaluation of other persons’ thinking (EOPT). After EFA using 218 undergraduates’ questionnaires of social metacognition in collaborative argumentation on a social psychological issue from a Sino-Foreign Cooperative Educational Institution, 17 indicators showed good factorability and reliability. After CFA using another 300 questionnaires on social metacognition in collaborative argumentation about the pandemic received from undergraduates who come from 52 countries in the International College of Education, among the 17 indicators derived from the first sample’s EFA, three indicators had high correlation with others. Finally, based on the reviews of three experts, these three indicators were deleted. The remaining 14 indicators formed good construct validity with acceptable convergent and discriminant validities. The Neural Networks (NN) model which is incorporated in the control system design has been studied, and the results show better performance than the mathematical model approach. However, some studies consider that only offline NN model learning and does not use the online NN model learning directly on the control system. As a result, the controller's performance decreases due to changes in the system environment from time to time. The Reinforcement Learning (RL) method has been investigated intensively, especially Model-based RL (Mb-RL) to predict system dynamics. It has been investigated and performs well in making the system more robust to environmental changes by enabling online learning. This paper proposes online learning of local dynamics using the Mb-RL method by utilizing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. We consider Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme as an agent of the Mb-RL method to control the regulatory trajectory objectives with a random shooting policy to search for the minimum objective function. A nonlinear Mass Spring Damper (NMSD) system with parameter-varying linear inertia is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the system can effectively control high-oscillating nonlinear systems with good performance.

This paper addresses the stability analysis of uncertain discrete-time delayed systems described by Difference-Algebraic Representations (DAR). This kind of representation allows dealing with rational functions of the state as well as uncertain parameters. New delay-dependent Linear Matrix Inequalities based-conditions are obtained with a parameter-dependent Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional jointly with the Wirtinger-based summation inequality and the delay-dependent Moon's inequality with a suitable augmented vector. Numerical examples illustrate the potential and effectiveness of the proposed conditions.

As transistors dimensions shrink to nanometer sizes, the variability of their electrical parameters becomes a significant factor in the performance of integrated circuits. Random Telegraph Noise (RTN) is a time-dependent variability that changes the drain current (or threshold voltage) of metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) from one instant in time to the other, leading to jitter in oscillating circuits, such as ring and voltage-controlled (VCO) oscillators. This work evaluates the time-domain jitter caused by the RTN in a capacitive and a current-controlled ring oscillator-based VCO. Different concepts of jitter (absolute jitter, period jitter, and cycle-to-cycle jitter) are studied, focusing on the influence of time window sizes on the jitter amplitude. Monte Carlo simulations are employed for both oscillators, considering a modified SPICE simulator to properly include the RTN impact on the threshold voltage of the transistors.

Virtualization technologies are still growing bigger and faster. Despite the greatness of its advancement, the costume industry is still very accessible when it comes to real trials. Off-the-shelf stuff are inadequate details for the desired individual to assess its in-depth utility for each garment trying on for a second, including custom stuff are much harder to try out right away. To this end, 2D image-based 3D reconstruction inclusive of touchable-virtualized space is accessible easier to stuff details for mans' decision making in purchasing. We establish the overall end-to-end pipeline from reconstruction until visualization for one instance to be triable on its stuff for a moment. As an expectation, our proposed approach can bring objects into the experimental area and use them immediately without any obstacle.

To foster an immersive and natural human-robot interaction (HRI), the implementation of tactile perception and feedback becomes imperative, effectively bridging the conventional sensory gap. In this paper, we propose a dual-modal electronic skin (e-skin) that integrates magnetic tactile sensing and vibration feedback for enhanced HRI. The dual-modal tactile e-skin offers multi-functional tactile sensing and programmable haptic feedback, underpinned by a layered structure comprised of flexible magnetic films, soft silicone elastomer, a Hall sensor and actuator array, and a microcontroller unit. The e-skin captures the magnetic field changes caused by subtle deformations through Hall sensors, employing deep learning for accurate tactile perception. Simultaneously, the actuator array generates mechanical vibrations to facilitate haptic feedback, delivering diverse mechanical stimuli. Notably, the dual-modal e-skin is capable of transmitting tactile information bidirectionally, enabling object recognition and fine-weighing operations. This bidirectional tactile interaction framework will enhance the immersion and efficiency of interactions between humans and robots.

In this paper, considering photovoltaic/battery sourced microgrids with grid-forming droop control in the load interface converter for power management, two alternative converter topologies for the battery are tested: dual boost interleaved converter and three-phase interleaved converter. These topologies are based on the conventional bidirectional buckboost converter and their employment is to allow a reduction in component sizing, improvement in power quality, and higher output voltage. Analysis of the operation of these converters in different operation modes of the microgrid is carried out, including battery normal charging, battery normal discharging, battery charging limit, and maximum state-of-charge, through simulations in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Results suggest advantages such as reduced stress on switches and battery charging current ripple for the two interleaved converters tested and the potential implementation of higher output voltage for the dual boost converter.

This paper formulates a three-clamping-level discontinuous pulsewidth modulation (DPWM) for three-phase cascaded H-bridge static compensators with star configuration. Analytical expressions of capacitor voltage and zero-sequence voltage under the three-clamping-level DPWM are provided considering the inherent capacitor voltage oscillations. Based on the derived expressions, the paper analyses: (i) the inductive operation limits, and (ii) the total harmonic distortion (THD) and weighted THD of the output voltages. The results are compared with the continuous modulation and the conventional two-clamping-level DPWM, showing their different performances.

Learning to Predict Navigational Patterns from Partial Observations

Human beings cooperatively navigate rule-constrained environments by adhering to mutually known navigational patterns, which may be represented as directional pathways or road lanes. Inferring these navigational patterns from incompletely observed environments is required for intelligent mobile robots operating in unmapped locations. However, algorithmically defining these navigational patterns is nontrivial. This paper presents the first self-supervised learning (SSL) method for learning to infer navigational patterns in real-world environments from partial observations only. We explain how geometric data augmentation, predictive world modeling, and an information-theoretic regularizer enable our model to predict an unbiased local directional soft lane probability (DSLP) field in the limit of infinite data. We demonstrate how to infer global navigational patterns by fitting a maximum likelihood graph to the DSLP field. Experiments show that our SSL model outperforms two SOTA supervised lane graph prediction models on the nuScenes dataset. We propose our SSL method as a scalable and interpretable continual learning paradigm for navigation by perception. Code is available at https://***/robin-karlsson0/dslp. Objective: Restricted tendon gliding is commonly observed in patients after finger flexor tendon (FFT) repair. The study described here was aimed at quantifying the amount of FFT gliding to evaluate the recovery of post-operative tendons using a 2-D radiofrequency (RF)-based ultrasound speckle tracking algorithm (UST). Methods: Ex vivo uniaxial tensile testing of porcine flexor tendons and in vivo isometric testing of human FFT were implemented to verify the efficacy of UST beforehand. The verified UST was then applied to the patients after FFT repair to compare tendon gliding between affected and healthy sides and to investigate its correlation with the joint range of motion (ROM). Results: Excellent validity was confirmed with the average R2 value of 0.98, mean absolute error of 0.15 ± 0.08 mm and mean absolute percentage error of 5.19 ± 2.43% between results from UST and ex vivo testing. The test–retest reliability was verified with good agreement of ICC (0.90). The affected side exhibited less gliding (p = 0.001) and smaller active ROM (p = 0.002) than the healthy side. Meanwhile, a significant correlation between tendon gliding and passive ROM was found only on the healthy side (ρ = 0.711, p = 0.009). Conclusion: The present study provides a promising protocol to evaluate post-operative tendon recovery by quantifying the amount of FFT gliding with a validated UST. FFT gliding in patients with different levels of ROM restriction should be further explored for categorizing the severity of tendon adhesion. © 2023 World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology
