Photovoltaic Generation Potential of Paraná State, Brazil – A Comparative Analysis with European Countries

The theme of sustainable development has increasingly impacted the spheres of Brazilian society and has contributed to greater awareness to the need of natural resources conservation as well as issues on how to continue promoting socio-economic development of regions. One of the key issues for sustainable development is the generation of electricity with more use of renewable sources and, therefore, less environmental degradation. In this scenario, historically, Paraná State of Brazil has been one of the largest producers of electricity in the country, almost entirely from hydraulic source, due to the large existing river basin in the state. However, the use of this source in Brazil is declining due to depletion of water potential and also the pressure of society with respect to environmental, social and economic impacts caused by damming of rivers and flooding of cities and areas to form large reservoirs. To overcome these limitations, other sources have been studied and used, such as biomass and wind. Photovoltaic generation has been contemplated in Brazilian government policies only to supply electricity with off-grid systems in remote locations. However, due to the recent Resolution 482/2012 of ANEEL (Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency), which establishes rules for micro and mini-generation of electricity, it is possible that consumers install grid connected photovoltaic systems up to 1 MWp, as have been widely used in the urban environment installed or integrated on roofs as a form of distributed generation, particularly in Europe, where counts with installed capacity in GW range, while in Brazil it counts only with a few MW. Given this new perspective of growth of the Brazilian photovoltaic electricity generation this paper presents the potential of solar photovoltaic power generation in Paraná State, Brazil, with a comparative analysis with the potential presented by some European countries. Vehicular networks will play an important role in future smart cities. Connected vehicles will be able to provide entertainment content to their users in order to make traffic situations more enjoyable. However, the amount of bandwidth available to the vehicles may not be enough to satisfy all of them. In this case, we can say that a conflict of interest occurred and then must the solved as fair as possible. In this work, we propose a solution to solve this kind of collective conflict. Our solution balances users' satisfaction with resources consumption as it is capable of choosing the most adequate resolution algorithm based on the current application's situation. The results showed that with our solution it was possible to achieve adequate satisfaction levels, with low response time and controlled network usage.

This paper presents a proposal for Isolated Bidirectional battery charger. The charger in study has capacity to supply power 1.34KVA in a line of 400V DC and battery charging capability up to 5A at 192Vnom. For isolation of the batteries and improve energy efficiency in the conversion was used Planar transformer coupled to the switching transistors IGBTs for low losses. To control the energy flow in both directions was used Full-Bridge Converter suitable for the power level required at 400V bus. The charging of the batteries can be integrated into a network-smart grid, composed of renewable energy sources like photovoltaic and / or wind, or be used in UPS systems 'double conversion', whose load is less fault tolerant power. © 2013 IEEE.

Recently, a method for estimating permittivity distributions was reported. The method combined a numerical technique (Finite Element Method) with Genetic Algorithm (GA). However, methods for estimating the distribution of permittivity have not yet been established. The purpose of this study is to obtain experimental data in order to improve the estimation method. We measured capacitance and electrical potential of plural points when an acrylic rod is placed in various positions within a measurement system. © 2013 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

Improving the use of energy resources has been a great challenge in the last years. A new complex scenario involving a decentralized bidirectional communication between energy suppliers, distribution system and consumption is nowadays becoming reality. Sometimes cited as the largest and most complex machine ever built, Electric Grids (EG) are been transformed into Smart Grids (SG). Hence, the load forecasting problem has become more difficulty and more autonomous load predictors are needed in this new conjecture. In this paper a novel method, so-called MSES, bio-inspired by Evolution Strategies (ES) combined with Multi-Start (MS) procedure is described. This procedure is mainly based on a self-adaptive algorithm to calibrate the parameters of the fuzzy rules. MSES was implemented in C++ via OptFrame framework. Our main goal is to evaluate the performance of this algorithm in a grid environment. Real data from an electric utility have been used in order to test the proposed methodology. The obtained results are fully described and analyzed.

This paper presents a topology based on the interconnection of single-phase H-bridge converters and a three-phase converter acting as a shunt active power filter. Contributions for the model, PWM approach and control strategies are presented to the studied converter. As compared to the conventional solution by using just H-bridges converters, the proposed one reduces the number of semiconductor and storage devices while keeping the same characteristics of high number of levels. A comprehensive THD analysis will be considered followed by simulated and experimental outcomes. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper reports an effective method of packaging a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for the simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain. The technique consists of embedding two fiber Bragg grating sensors inside a polymeric material with different geometrical characteristics. The mechanical and thermal characterizations of the optical transducer were performed. Then a matrix equation used measurements of the wavelength shifts from the two sensors and yielded information about the temperature and strain coefficients. The preliminary results demonstrate the feasibility of the encapsulation technique allowing measurements of temperature and strain in smart structures and harsh environments. The experimental procedure provides robustness to the sensor and the matrix equation approach has the potential to determine simultaneously the strain and temperature coefficients. © 2013 SBMO/SBMag.

This paper presents a new multi-scale place recognition system inspired by the recent discovery of overlapping, multi-scale spatial maps stored in the rodent brain. By training a set of Support Vector Machines to recognize places at varying levels of spatial specificity, we are able to validate spatially specific place recognition hypotheses against broader place recognition hypotheses without sacrificing localization accuracy. We evaluate the system in a range of experiments using cameras mounted on a motorbike and a human in two different environments. At 100% precision, the multiscale approach results in a 56% average improvement in recall rate across both datasets. We analyse the results and then discuss future work that may lead to improvements in both robotic mapping and our understanding of sensory processing and encoding in the mammalian brain.

In this paper, a new approach to the topology configuration problem in the Island Model (IM) is proposed. The mechanism proposed works with a pool of candidates for migration and the choice of immigrants is performed using the usual selection techniques of evolutionary algorithms. Computational tests on IM versions of the Differential Evolution show positive effects of the proposed approach in terms of the number of function evaluations required for convergence.
