This paper presents a prototype of an acquisition board of electromyographic signals (EMG);an embedded portable, wireless and low cost solution. The system is composed of an EMG acquisition board, Zigbee modules and a device named GPRSx. After acquiring the EMG signal, it is sent through ZigBee wireless technology to GPRSx device. The GPRSx device sends the EMG signal to a server on the Internet by using GPRS wireless technology. Thus, the EMG signal is displayed in a graph on a remote computer. The results are very promising and may serve as a reference in studies for the biomedical area.

The theme of Sustainable Development has gained more and repercussion in the society spheres contributing to a greater awareness of the need for natural resources conservation, as well as the challenge of keeping promoting the socio-economic development of the regions. One of the key issues for this sustainable development is in the Electric Power Generation with the increasing use of renewable energy, and less harm to the environment. In this scenario, the state of Paraná historically has been one of the largest producers of electricity in the country, almost entirely through hydroelectric plants due to the large watershed in the state. However, the use of this source is in constant decline due to the hydric potential exhaustion, and also due to the pressure from society related to the environmental, social and economic impacts occasioned by its installation. To overcome these limitations, other sources have been studied and applied such as the biomass, the wind and photovoltaic in isolated systems. Most recently, as a function of the Call No. 13/2011 and the Resolution 482/2012 from ANEEL (Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency), there was also the possibility of generating electricity through Grid-connected Photovoltaic Power Systems. These systems have been widely employed in the urban environment as electricity generators near the distributed point of consumption, intensely applied in many countries, especially in Europe, usually requiring no additional area, since they can be installed on the roof of the building or integrated in it. This paper aims to present the Photovoltaic Map of the Paraná State, Brazil, which represents the potential for generating electricity through solar photovoltaic power, and also to compare the preliminary results of the values of electricity generation measured in the Gridconnected Photovoltaic Power System located at the Technological Federal University of Paraná (utfpr) in the city of Curitiba, capital of Paraná-Brazil.

This work considers Artificial Immune Systems to solve the economic load dispatch problem. The Immune Systems are based on the clonal selection principle. Cultural Algorithms using normative, situational, historical and topographical knowledge sources are used to improve the global optimization property of immune systems. A new main influence function is proposed which improves the results obtained by the cultural version. All the proposed approaches have several points of self-adaptation and use a local search operator that is based on a quasi-simplex technique. The Immune System and its cultural versions are validated in test problems that consider 13 and 40 thermal generators and take into account valve-point loading effects. They are also validated in a test problem with 20 thermal generators, valve-point loading effects and transmission losses. The proposed cultural method including the new influence function outperforms other modern metaheuristics reported in recent literature, finding the minimum fuel cost value for all test systems.

The objective of this research is to present a neural network based optical vibration sensor using a quad-cell photo-detector array. The proposed system uses a He-Ne laser source whose Gaussian beam impinges on the photo-detector array. The optical power distribution from the photo-detectors is fed to vibration monitoring system which maps the power distribution to the x-y position of the laser beam center. The vibration monitoring system uses artificial neural networks for function approximation to yield the correct mapping and estimate the x-y positions of the laser beam center which are then used for vibration characterization. An experimental setup of the system is developed and then trained using neural networks. The results obtained show the effectiveness of neural networks to estimate the vibration frequency and magnitude of a vibrating system.
