Recently, Metaverse has attracted increasing attention from both industry and academia, because of the significant potential to integrate real and digital worlds ever more seam-lessly. By combining advanced wireless communications, edge computing and virtual reality (VR) technologies into Metaverse, a multidimensional, intelligent and powerful wireless edge Meta-verse is created for future human society. In this paper, we design a privacy preserving targeted advertising strategy for the wireless edge Metaverse. Specifically, a Metaverse service provider (MSP) allocates bandwidth to the VR users so that the users can access Metaverse from edge access points. To protect users' privacy, the covert communication technique is used in the downlink. Then, the MSP can offer high-quality access services to earn more profits. Motivated by the concept of “covert”, targeted advertising is used to promote the sale of bandwidth and ensure that the advertising strategy cannot be detected by competitors who may make counter-offer and by attackers who want to disrupt the services. We derive the best advertising strategy in terms of budget input, with the help of the Vidale-Wolfe model and Hamiltonian function. Furthermore, we propose a novel metric named Meta-Immersion to represent the user's experience feelings. The performance evaluation shows that the MSP can boost its revenue with an optimal targeted advertising strategy, especially compared with that without the advertising.

Super-resolution algorithms aim to produce magnified high-resolution versions from low-resolution images. Some methods, however, are prone to generate blur during the process. Simple sharpening filters are adopted to alleviate this type of artifact. However, the actual effectiveness of this approach is not clear-cut in the literature. This work evaluates the effect of three simple sharpening filters on the quality of images obtained from super-resolution methods. Two metrics were considered in the evaluation: the Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) metric, and the Learned Perceptual Image Patch Similarity (LPIPS). One of the filters could consistently improve the LPIPS metric of magnified images from diverse benchmark sets on top of seven super-resolution methods. The increments obtained for the perceptual metric seem to occur due to the sharpening effect. Improvements on PSNR values were not as consistent. © 2022 SPIE.

Image captioning aims to generate a description of visual contents with natural language automatically. This is useful in several potential applications, such as image understanding and virtual assistants. With recent advances in deep neural networks, natural and semantic text generation has been improved in image captioning. However, maintaining the gradient flow between neurons in consecutive layers becomes challenging as the network gets deeper. In this paper, we propose to integrate an auxiliary classifier in the residual recurrent neural network, which enables the gradient flow to reach the bottom layers for enhanced caption generation. Experiments on the MSCOCO and VizWiz datasets demonstrate the advantage of our proposed approach over the state-of-the-art approaches in several performance metrics.

Describing the semantic content of an image via natural language, known as image captioning, has recently attracted substantial interest in computer vision and language processing communities. Current image captioning approaches are mainly based on an encoder-decoder framework in which visual information is extracted by an image encoder and captions are generated by a text decoder, using convolution neural net-works (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN), respectively. Although this framework is promising for image captioning, it has limitations in utilizing the encoded visual information for generating grammatically and semantically correct captions in the RNN decoder. More specifically, the RNN decoder is ineffective in using the contextual information from the encoded data due to its limited ability in capturing long-term complex dependencies. Inspired by the advantage of gated recurrent unit (GRU), in this paper, we propose an extension of conventional RNN by introducing a multi-layer GRU that modulates the most relevant information inside the unit to enhance the semantic coherence of captions. Experimental results on the MSCOCO dataset show the superiority of our proposed approach over the state-of-the-art approaches in several performance metrics.

Unmanned aerial vehicle-aided communication (UAB-BS) is a promising solution to establish rapid wireless connectivity in sudden/temporary crowded events because of its more flexibility and mobility features than conventional ground base station (GBS). Because of these benefits, UAV-BSs can easily be deployed at high altitudes to provide more line of sight (LoS) links than GBS. Therefore, users on the ground can obtain more reliable wireless channels. In practice, the mobile nature of the ground user can create uneven user density at different times and spaces. This phenomenon leads to unbalanced user associations among UAV-BSs and may cause frequent UAV-BS overload. We propose a three-dimensional adaptive and fair deployment approach to solve this problem. The proposed approach can jointly optimize the altitude and transmission power of UAV-BS to offload the traffic from overloaded UAV-BSs. The simulation results show that the network performance improves by 37.71% in total capacity, 37.48% in total energy efficiency and 16.12% in the Jain fairness index compared to the straightforward greedy approach. This note presents a new method for set-based joint state and parameter estimation of discrete-time systems using constrained zonotopes. This is done by extending previous set-based state estimation methods to include parameter identification in a unified framework. Unlike in interval-based methods, the existing dependencies between states and model parameters are maintained from one time step to the next, thus providing a more accurate estimation scheme. In addition, the enclosure of states and parameters is refined using measurements through generalized intersections, which are properly captured by constrained zonotopes. The spread of Corona Virus Disease 19 (COVID-19) in Indonesia is still relatively high and has not shown a significant decrease. One of the main reasons is due to the lack of supervision on the implementation of health protocols such as wearing masks in daily activities. Recently, state-of-the-art algorithms were introduced to automate face mask detection. To be more specific, the researchers developed various kinds of architectures for the detection of masks based on computer vision methods. This paper aims to evaluate well-known architectures, namely the ResNet50, VGG11, InceptionV3, EfficientNetB4, and YOLO (You Only Look Once) to recommend the best approach in this specific field. By using the MaskedFace-Net dataset, the experimental results showed that the EfficientNetB4 architecture has better accuracy at 95.77% compared to the YOLOv4 architecture of 93.40%, InceptionV3 of 87.30%, YOLOv3 of 86.35%, ResNet50 of 84.41%, VGG11 of 84.38%, and YOLOv2 of 78.75%, respectively. It should be noted that particularly for YOLO, the model was trained using a collection of MaskedFace-Net images that had been pre-processed and labelled for the task. The model was initially able to train faster with pre-trained weights from the COCO dataset thanks to transfer learning, resulting in a robust set of features expected for face mask detection and classification.

Recent discoveries on Mott insulating and unconventional superconducting states in twisted bilayer graphene with Moiré superlattices have reshaped the landscape of "twistronics" and paved the way for developing high-temperature superconductors and new devices for quantum computing and sensing. Meanwhile, artificially structured photonic and phononic metamaterials/crystals (or meta-crystals) have become a fertile playground for emulating quantum-mechanical features of condensed matter systems, revealing new routes for robust control of classical waves. Drawing inspiration from the success of twisted bilayer graphene, this perspective casts an overarching framework of the emerging Moiré photonic and phononic meta-crystals that promise novel classical-wave devices. We begin with the fundamentals of Moiré superlattices, before highlighting recent works that exploit twist angle and interlayer coupling as new ingredients to engineer and tailor the band structures and effective material properties of photonic and phononic meta-crystals. We finally discuss future directions and promises of this emerging area in materials science and wave physics. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.
