Community and a sense of belonging are commonly accepted as two of the biggest predictors of academic success in higher education. Additionally, student distress, accidental death from risky behavior, and suicide can be combatted primarily through connections, according to the University's Suicide Prevention program. Due to the nature of the work, it is easy for graduate students to become isolated and disconnected. Increased rigor, perfectionistic tendencies and demand for original impactful contributions make graduate school stressful. The very nature of the learning process creates dissonance by presenting hurdles and problems to be solved. Creating connection, community and a sense of professional belonging can make our graduateprograms thrive instead of ridden with student attrition, students just making it through, or worse. Initiatives were begun in a large graduateengineeringprogram. This is a discussion of the good, the bad, and the ugly of the first attempts of the programming. Some of the components include small group leadership of new students, Get Launched for Success Workshop Series, weekly email outreach spotlighting University resources, suicide risk assessment, Group Wellness Coaching, collaboration with graduate student organization officers, student interest surveys, and "Surviving the Holidays" workshop presented by campus counseling services. Support was solidified from faculty leadership to create a wellness culture. The department chair was approached for approval of a budget for food for events in autumn semester. Faculty who had experienced a student's accidental death just months prior were approached about recommending their advisees participate in Group Wellness Coaching with the objective of creating community and connection. In order to be intentional, consultation regarding objectives, outcomes and evaluation was sought. In the iron-based superconductors, unconventional superconductivity emerges in proximity to intertwined electronic orders consisting of an electronic nematic order and a spin density wave (SDW). Recently, BaNi2As2, like its well-known iron-based analog BaFe2As2, has been discovered to host a symmetry-breaking structural transition but coupled to a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) instead of SDW, providing a novel platform to study intertwined orders. Here, through a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study combined with a detwinning B1g uniaxial strain, we identify distinct spectral evidence of band evolution due to the structural transition as well as CDW-induced band folding. In contrast to the nematicity and spin density wave in BaFe2As2, the structural and CDW order parameters in BaNi2As2 are observed to be strongly coupled and do not separate in the presence of uniaxial strain. Furthermore, no nematic band splitting is resolved above the structural transition. Our measurements point to a likely lattice origin of the CDW order in BaNi2As2.

Dynamically encircling exceptional points (EPs) can lead to chiral mode switching as the system parameters are varied along a path that encircles EP. However, conventional encircling protocols result in low transmittance due to path-dependent losses. Here, we present a paradigm to encircle EPs that includes fast Hamiltonian variations on the parameter boundaries, termed Hamiltonian hopping, enabling ultrahigh-efficiency chiral mode switching. This protocol avoids path-dependent loss and allows us to experimentally demonstrate nearly 90% efficiency at 1550 nm in the clockwise direction, overcoming a long-standing challenge of non-Hermitian optical systems and powering up new opportunities for EP physics.
