Brazil is the second country in the world in aesthetic surgical procedures, with 905,000 procedures, being behind only the U.S., according to information corresponding to the year 2011 from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) and the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (BSPS). Given this scenario, we chose to study the adipose cells, which are a organ with intense metabolic and endocrine activity. Accumulated in excess adipocytes causes the disadvantages metabolic and endocrine in the organism, leading to obesity in general and located. This research referred to obesity marked by deposition in the abdominal area, that is denominated central or androide obesity, in the case of a localized adiposity. The objective of the research was to analyze the effects of therapeutic ultrasound and medium frequency current in this particular type of adiposity. The therapeutic protocol consisted of the utilization therapy of therapeutic ultrasound 3 MHz and medium frequency current (1 kHz, with Bursts of 2 ms), performed in ten sessions of 40-minute each. The sample consisted of 16 women, of whom 14 have finalized treatment. The assessment instruments used were: percentage of total body fat by bioimpedance, skinfold measurement in the region where localized adiposity was. We observed the reduction in measures measured in abdominal circumference and percentage decrease in total body fat measured on a digital scale bipolar bioimpedance, as well as the decrease measured by skinfold plicometer in all patients submitted to treatment. The results of submission to the treatment of Combined Therapy can be considered satisfactory, due the record in reducing the parameters analyzed, despite being necessary to a more thorough study on the subject and scientific substantiation in a larger sample. Two multiplierless pruned 8-point discrete cosine transform (DCT) approximation are presented. Both transforms present lower arithmetic complexity than state-of-the-art methods. The performance of such new methods was assessed in the image compression context. A JPEG-like simulation was performed, demonstrating the adequateness and competitiveness of the introduced methods. Digital VLSI implementation in CMOS technology was also considered. Both presented methods were realized in Berkeley Emulation Engine (BEE3). © 2015 IEEE.

The feasibility of generating tomographic images of objects inside crude oil is investigated in this paper. Crude oil in the visible spectrum usually appears as black oil. Nevertheless, in the mid-infrared range, crude oil presents bands of high transmission. These windows of opportunities are explored to obtain data for generating cross-section images. In this paper, a first generation tomograph (containing one radiation source and one detector) is setup and applied to visualize objects inside a typical crude oil sample from a Brazilian reservoir. Reconstructed images based on standard filtered back-projection algorithm for phantom measurements show very promising results.

This work describes a geotechnical characterization system applied for soil analysis. This system can measure the acoustic, electrical, and thermal responses of soil, and the luminance and temperature of the site. For the evaluation of acoustic response, two piezoelectric transducers are placed separately by a specific distance, where an electric signal is used to generate an acoustic wave and the other sensor is used to detect received signal. The same setup and distance (50 mm) was employed in a set of two electrodes, where an electrical signal is applied to measure the electrical impedance response. Besides that, capacitive sensors are also inserted into soil. Both sensors (capacitive and electrodes) measure the electrical impedance response, but capacitive sensors are used in small scale measurements (about 1 mm). For the thermal response evaluation, a set of thermistors is used to measure temperature variation. Based on the performed tests, developed system allows the measurement of electrical impedance and thermal response. Besides that, the system also can be used in environmental monitoring, where solar irradiance, air temperature, and soil moisture data can be evaluated.

Humans sense of touch consists in a complexity of sensors and nervous system. The information inferred by this system enables the daily dexterous manipulation tasks. In biological systems, there is no conscious prioritization of sensors while performing tactile exploration and the selection of exploratory movements is driven by learning instincts and data gathered by previous movements. The development of artificial systems tries to mimic such systems with engineered sensors and strategies for movement selection. This paper presents a data-driven analysis to the problem of sensor selection in the contour following for shape discrimination task. This task consists of a 4-DOF robotic finger exploring a set of 7 synthetic shapes. The data collected from the motors, inertial measurement unit, and magnetometer was analyzed applying principal component analysis and a multilayer perceptron neural network. Results show the variation of classification rate depending on the fingertip material and sensor considered. It is worth to observe that the magnetometer was the most robust in both cases.

The vibration in induction motors is due to mechanical and electrical forces existing during the motor operation. The vibration monitoring can help to prevent wear in motors, to increase its efficiency and lowering maintenance costs. Through knowledge and accurate diagnostic procedures, it is possible to detect the cause of the vibration. This paper presents the vibration measurement analysis in the induction motor running at no-load condition using a biaxial optical fiber accelerometer. The sensor is positioned on the induction motor, and the acquired data compared with the one from a capacitive sensor. Changing the power supply frequency from 10 to 60 Hz a higher SNR was observed for both directions on the optical sensor data. The characteristics of the optical sensor, immunity to electromagnetic interference and high sensitivity, 87.848 pm.g-1 and 92.351 pm.g-1 for two directions and independent directions, favors its use for monitoring vibrations in electrical machines. The results indicate a relation between deterioration and mechanical vibration and, thus, providing the motivation for additional study and a basis for future applications. © 2015 IEEE.

A recently investigation of the series solution presented by Wedepohl et al., in 1973, yields a new hybrid technique for calculating Z G of buried cables. An enhanced hybrid technique partly analytic-numeric is used in this paper to assess the behavior of other important techniques for calculating ground-return impedances of underground power cables. The accuracy of the here proposed technique is comparable to the Wedepohl series solution, hypergeometric confluent functions, numerical integration modified method and an image based closed-form approximation.

The ability to capture the chemical signatures of biomolecules(i.e.,electron-transfer dynamics)in living cells will provide an entirely new perspective on biology and *** can be accomplished using nanoscale optical antennas that can collect,resonate and focus light from outside the cell and emit molecular ***,we describe biologically inspired nanoscale optical antennas that utilize the unique topologies of plant viruses(and thus,are called gold plant viruses)for molecular fingerprint *** electromagnetic calculations for these gold viruses indicate that capsid morphologies permit high amplification of optical scattering energy compared to a smooth *** experimental measurements of various gold viruses based on four different plant viruses,we observe highly enhanced optical cross-sections and the modulation of the resonance wavelength depending on the viral ***,in label-free molecular imaging,we successfully obtain higher sensitivity(by a factor of up to 10^(6))than can be achieved using similar-sized *** virtue of the inherent functionalities of capsids and the plasmonic characteristics of the gold layer,a gold virus-based antenna will enable cellular targeting,imaging and drug delivery.

Heterostructures like InAs/GaSb superlattices (SLs) are distinctly different from well-studied ones like GaAs/AlAs SLs in terms of band alignment, common interface atom, and phonon spectrum overlapping of the constituents, which manifests as stark differences in their electronic and vibrational properties. This paper reports a comprehensive examination of all four types of phonon modes (confined, quasiconfined, extended, and interface) that have long been predicted for the InAs/GaSb SL, with the observation and interpretation of a set of phonon modes by performing cleaved edge μ-Raman study with polarization analysis. Furthermore, we show a signature of symmetry reduction from D2d for GaAs/AlAs SL to C2v for InAs/GaSb SL revealed as a phonon-polariton effect.
