Describing the semantic content of an image via natural language, known as image captioning, has recently attracted substantial interest in computer vision and language processing communities. Current image captioning approaches are mainly based on an encoder-decoder framework in which visual information is extracted by an image encoder and captions are generated by a text decoder, using convolution neural net-works (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN), respectively. Although this framework is promising for image captioning, it has limitations in utilizing the encoded visual information for generating grammatically and semantically correct captions in the RNN decoder. More specifically, the RNN decoder is ineffective in using the contextual information from the encoded data due to its limited ability in capturing long-term complex dependencies. Inspired by the advantage of gated recurrent unit (GRU), in this paper, we propose an extension of conventional RNN by introducing a multi-layer GRU that modulates the most relevant information inside the unit to enhance the semantic coherence of captions. Experimental results on the MSCOCO dataset show the superiority of our proposed approach over the state-of-the-art approaches in several performance metrics.

Bacterial discrimination is crucial for accurate microbiological diagnosis and timely antibiotic treatment. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an ideal technique due to its non-invasive, label-free molecular sensing capabilities. By analyzing bacterial supernatants, containing various purine derivatives, SERS can differentiate bacterial species based on their unique spectral distributions. However, the same bacterial species with different antibiotic resistance may secrete similar purine derivatives, differing only slightly in composition. Furthermore, each purine derivative may have a different molecular affinity to the SERS substrate, making it difficult to distinguish the exact molecular ratio. To improve SERS-based bacterial discrimination, we propose an air-liquid microfluidics-integrated SERS system (ALM-SERS) that selectively adsorbs and detects bacterial secretions. By taking features of precise microdroplet manipulation and contact area from microfluidics and features of selective molecular adsorption and fingerprints characterization from the SERS technique, we successfully perform a "sequential molecular adsorption" strategy to address the signal interference of complicated molecular mixtures in existing SERS methods. As a proof of concept, we first evaluate the molecular affinity of purine derivatives and then demonstrate the competitive analyte adsorption using adenine/cytosine and hypoxanthine/uracil sample mixtures. Finally, we tested six bacterial supernatants, including two Gram types and four strains with identical taxonomy but differing antibiotic resistance. Another six clinically isolated bacterial samples with different antibiotic resistance were also applied. Our results showed that a successful bacterial discrimination between similar species was not possible using a single SERS spectrum. In this paper, we propose a new method to estimate the traveling direction for pedestrian by applying IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and PCA (Principal Component Analysis) to sensor information from a smartwatch. Because a result of PCA do not have orientation information, an estimate of the traveling direction includes an indeterminacy problem. We show that the proposed method can solve this problem and provide high accuracy in the traveling direction estimation by walking experiments. © 2020 IEEE.

The green transition has brought about a worldwide-shift to the use of renewables as alternative energy sources. Because of this, high voltage DC has been a field of interest in power electronics due to its capability in efficiently transmitting power to reach remote areas. Typical DC-DC electronic power converter design has the capability of boosting voltage level to a certain extent but not enough for high-voltage applications. Using the DMAIC Approach of the Six Sigma, quality improvements in the design was proposed to stabilize operating frequency, bring up the output voltage from 100 VDC to 4,000 VDC and provide at least 10% margin of error in the apparent power measured at the output side to offset inherent losses in the electrical design. These proposed quality improvements were sustained by designing a control circuit that would ensure the attainment of the parameters set in the Define Phase of the DMAIC Approach. The result of the study is a practical 12 VDC to 4,000 VDC boost converter design that has incorporated all the proposed quality improvements.

Traditional solid-state lighting relies on color converters with a serious environmental footprint. As an alternative, natural materials such as plant extracts could be employed if their low quantum yield (QYs) in liquid and solid states were higher. With this motivation, here, we investigate the optical features of P. harmala extract in water, develop its efficient color-converting solids using a facile, sustainable, and low-cost method, and integrate it with a light-emitting diode. To obtain a high-efficiency solid host for the P. harmala-based fluorophores, we optically and structurally compared two crystalline and two cellulose-based platforms. Structural characterizations indicate that sucrose crystals, cellulose-based cotton, and paper platforms allow fluorophores to be distributed relatively homogenously as opposed to the KCl crystals. Optical characterizations reveal that the extracted solution and the extract-embedded paper possess QYs of 75.6% and 44.7%, respectively, whereas the QYs of the cotton, sucrose, and KCl crystals remain below 10%. Subsequently, as a proof-of-concept demonstration, we integrate the as-prepared efficient solid of P. harmala for the first time with a light-emitting diode (LED) chip to produce a color-converting LED. The resulting blue-emitting LED achieves a luminous efficiency of 21.9 lm/Welect with CIE color coordinates of (0.139,0.070). With these results, we bring plant-based fluorescent biomolecules to the stage of solid-state lighting. We believe that they hold great promise as next-generation, environmentally friendly organic color converters for lighting applications. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Image-based weight measurement is a novel approach for reducing the manpower consumption of Korean cattle farms without causing stress to animals. In this paper, the weight was predicted by measuring the area of Korean cattle and estimating the weight correlation factors. Using the histogram sum from the acquired image data, repeated data was removed and learning efficiency was improved, and the Mask R-CNN model was trained with the selected data. Mask R-CNN uses RoIAlign and is a model capable of precise segmentation by replacing the Softmax activation function of FCN with sigmoid. The result of territorial division of Korean cattle in the background of an actual barn reached an average precision of 0.88 with confidence standards of average IoU 0.88 and 0.85. The size of the mask obtained as a result of segmentation had a maximum correlation of 0.88 with the body weight, and the minor axis length and major axis length of the optimal ellipse calculated through the mask had a correlation of 0.35 and 0.56, respectively. The weighted average of the error rate of the weight prediction results using these three weight correlation factors was 0.07. Copyright © The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

The purpose of this letter is to study the design and explore vertically stacked complementary tunneling field-effect transistors (CTFETs) using CFET technology for emerging technology nodes. As a prior work, the CTFET’s device-level simulations are implemented and deliberated in strict compliance with the experimental settings. This work comprises the study of physical and DC analyses by scaling the p- to n-CTFET separation (D pn), being a significant factor in CFET/CTFET design for its process difficulty. By utilizing the 50% benefit in footprint, the work is further extended to CTFET static random access memory implementation and characterization with hold/read noise margin analysis. © 2023 The Author(s). A vast number of spatiotemporal datasets collected from a wide range of sources has motivated scientists to develop effective approaches to identify interesting patterns hidden in these datasets. In this respect, kernel density estimators, which belong to a class of non-parametric estimators in statistics, have been widely exploited in recent years. With this background, we have developed a novel kernel density estimator aiming to provide accurate analysis results. According to the evaluation with a real spatiotemporal dataset, which collected emergency medical service records in a county in the United States, the proposed kernel density estimator can approximate the probability density function significantly more accurately than a conventional kernel density estimator. Furthermore, we have exploited the proposed kernel density estimator to identify interesting patterns hidden in the real spatiotemporal dataset.

Amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) has recently made significant advancement as a key material for electronic component design owing to its compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor technologies. A comprehensive analysis of reliability-related issues is required to determine the true potential of a-IGZO-based devices for next-generation electronics applications. To address this objective, we electrically characterize scaled-channel a-IGZO thin film transistors (TFTs) under positive bias (temperature) stress (PB(T)S). Both PBS and PBTS are characterized by positive and negative V_th shift, respectively, during the various gate stresses. In particular, the negative V_th shift is explained by the generation of donor-like traps stimulated by ionization of oxygen vacancy/hydrogen at elevated temperature. The TFTs exhibit relatively decent stability during the PBS operation. The analysis of devices with variant channel dimensions implies that long-channel devices exhibit relatively higher stability and performance compared to the short-channel ones. We also observe that the V_th can be controllably adjusted by employing the top gate (TG) with bottom gate sweep. Moreover, the stress-induced partial recovery mechanism is experimentally observed owing to detrapping of charges. Generally, the reported results infer a perceptive understanding of scaled-channel a-IGZO-TFTs which helps with shaping performance-enhancement strategies. © 2024 The Author(s).
