However, this field is still not much technically developed and a palmist has to analyze palms personally and manually. In the smart grid, collecting data from remote sensors and meters such as phasor measurement units (PMUs) can help ensure safe and reliable operation, avoiding overloads and outages. Since such data is related to critical operation of the power grid, appropriate security schemes should be utilized for secure communications among the components in the smart grid. This paper proposes a key management scheme for secure data communications in a smart grid system. It is a versatile key management scheme in that it can support unicast, multicast and broadcast communications. Moreover, the proposed scheme can be tailored to the hierarchical control system structure of the smart grid. A comparative security cost analysis is performed to illustrate that the proposed scheme can achieve efficient key management.

In this paper, we develop a performance modeling technique for analyzing the time varying network layer queueing behavior of multihop wireless networks with constant bit rate traffic. Our approach is a hybrid of fluid flow queueing modeling and a time varying connectivity matrix. Network queues are modeled using fluid-flow based differential equation models which are solved using numerical methods, while node mobility is modeled using deterministic or stochastic modeling of adjacency matrix elements. Numerical and simulation experiments show that the new approach can provide reasonably accurate results with significant improvements in the computation time compared to standard simulation tools.

This paper presents the implementation of visual servo control for a robotic manipulator bereft of proprioceptive sensors, employing for such purpose computer vision techniques to infer the joint angles and position coordinates of the system in real-time. Fiducial markers were attached to the links of the manipulator, so that, through a simple camera physically arranged in monocular topology and steady configuration (eye to hand), and a processing and data extraction interface, it is possible to compute the complete spatial configuration of the manipulator and therefore, calculate control laws for it. Regarding this aspect, the manipulator dynamics was disregarded, and a resolved-rate control method was applied, based on the differential kinematics of the robot.

This paper shows the design and implementation of a multi-resonant Class-E

DC-DC converter based on voltage- controlled oscillator. By cascading a Class-E inverter to a Class-E rectifier, a double soft-switching converter is obtained, in which, the active switch turns-on with zero voltage switching and the diode turns-off with zero derivative voltage switching. This work relies on design equations based on normalized charts that relate the resonant frequency to the current transfer function, quality factor and peak values for the switch variables. In order to activate the switch, a circuit scheme is proposed based on a voltage-controlled oscillator connected to a low-side gate-driver. Therefore, it is not necessary to use a microcontroller neither auxiliary power sources. Experimental results are presented to show the feasibility of the proposed converter.

Finite-state automata and Supervisory Control Theory have been used to model and solve job-shop scheduling and planning problems. However, even if it seems to be easier to work with DFA and SCT, this solution will suffer with “the curse of dimensionality”, which can cause state explosion when the system becomes bigger and more complex. This paper presents a set of sufficient conditions that allow to work with abstractions of the supervisor, instead of the supervisor itself, as the search universe to solve a planning problem. Such abstraction is the natural projection of the supervisor into the set of controllable events and it should satisfy the observer property. This abstraction is smaller then the original automaton, which reduces the search universe for the optimization algorithms. Also, we present a set of conditions for the model of the system and specifications that will results on the satisfaction of the observer property.

The electrical characteristics and performance estimation of a MEMS spirometer is reported. The device design incorporates a silicon turbine, integrated magnets, ball bearings, and stators having planar coils. Pneumatic actuation of the turbine with tangential gas flow induces voltages on the stators. Spirometer parameters including breathing flow rate and lung capacity can be determined from the induced voltage amplitude and frequency. Two 12-pole stators with 25- and 50-turns per pole were fabricated. The resistance and inductance values were measured to be 3.9 kΩ and 2.6 mH, and 15.8 kΩ and 10.3 mH, respectively. The expected sensitivity of the devices was calculated to be 0.1 V/lpm and 0.2 V/lpm for the 25- and 50-turns per pole stators, respectively. The integration of all device components will lead to a compact and low-cost spirometer for patient self-monitoring.
