This study presents a more accurate evaluation method for assessing ankle spasticity compared to conventional goniometric techniques by utilizing measurements obtained from Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) and surface electromyography (sEMG) devices. Integrating IMU and EMG sensors provides substantial benefits for accurately determining the range of motion (ROM) associated with spasticity during targeted movements. In this study, the proposed method provides precise measurement and an objective evaluation of onset time detection of antagonistic muscle co-contraction, and accordingly the ROM of the actuated joint. Moreover, the implementation of cost-effective wearable sensors enables the monitoring of muscle spasticity in clinical environments and can be particularly valuable in regions with limited access to experienced therapists, providing a more efficient approach to tracking spasticity levels.

This paper represents a novel microfluidic device for simple refractive index (RI) measurement of fluid sample with sub microliter volume. The defocusing imaging technique using a three pinhole aperture plate is implemented for the refractive index measurement. For the self-calibration, the microfluidic device has a measurement region and a self-calibration region, and both regions are designed to be captured on single image frame. Thus, the refractive index of a sample fluid is automatically calculated with the self-calibration. For the demonstration of the proposed device, standard refractive index liquids with the refractive indices of 1.300, 1.400, 1.500, 1.600 and 1.700 are used. The measured refractive index has the maximum deviation of 0.0036 (0.24%) from the standard refractive index values.

In this paper, an optimal motion-sensing technique of indoor children's accident prevention system has been developed. There is a drawback in the existing detection algorithm due to the environment in a manner that recognizes the difference between the 1% and more frames of motion recognition accuracy. The proposed motion detection method is based on the background modeling technique to improve the accuracy. The method is obtained using the technique to solve the recognition errors arising from the surrounding environment. We are easy to recognize the danger area using mobile cloud-based smartphone, and provide notification to tell, remote control when children access to danger area. Also, for people to recognize the size of the minimum recognition (blob) to be able to adjust the children and to recognize accurately, we improve the existing algorithms. Through the experiments, based on an improved algorithm, we derived the optimal value for children.

We investigated the effect of white noise on working memory performance using electroencephalography (EEG). Six healthy subjects participated in this study, and each subject performed a 2-back task under white noise and no sound conditions. After a series of EEG preprocessing, the amplitude of event-related potential (ERP) was calculated. The results indicated an increase in average accuracy and mean P300 amplitude during the white noise condition compared to without it, suggesting that white noise might enhance working memory performance. However, due to the limited number of participants, statistical power was not attained. In our future studies, we will perform additional experiments with more subjects.

The LO phonon-plasmon coupling of InN for the E1(LO) mode has been found; however, the decoupling for the A1(LO) mode has been reported in many issues. Several reports have discussed the electron- and phonon-scattering mechanisms, while there is no detailed investigation on the broadening factors of mode energies even for E1(LO) phonon-plasmon coupled scheme. In this issue, the studied InN layers grown by the molecular-beam epitaxy method have residual electron density obtained by Hall measurements in a range from 8×1017to1×1019cm−3. The electron density measured by infrared reflectance measurements is almost constant with a temperature variation from 5to300K. The dependence of the observed broadening factors of the E1(LO) phonon-plasmon coupled modes on the electron density is found to show the characteristic properties of the level anticrossing, in particular, for the increase of these broadening factors around the level anticrossing region with the temperature increase from 5to300K. Compared to the recent report on the LO phonon-plasmon coupled modes for A1(LO), smaller broadening for E1(LO) is observed here.

This paper presents the design and mechatronics implementation of a human stress detection system (HSDS) using a biomechanics approach. A simple, compact and easy to use system is developed and built on a 2-layer PCB. It consists of two transducers, an LCD display and a micro-controller chip along with their respective interfacing circuits. After characterizing the two transducers, an algorithm was developed based on the measurements to classify the human stress condition. A simple classification rule that was adopted revealed that the system can detect 78% of the stressed examinees. The overall system success rate in identifying one of three states (relaxed, half stressed and stressed) was 60%. One major application for HSDS could be in the automotive industry were the driver condition is constantly monitored, and if a stress state is detected, the driver can be notified to stop the car and relax.
