Photovoltaic (PV) inverters can provide ancillary services to the electrical grid, such as harmonic current compensation (HCC), reactive power injection, power smoothing and frequency regulation. Even though this extra functionality can improve the grid power quality, the reliability of the power electronics components of the PV inverter can be affected. Some studies performed further analysis in the semiconductor devices operating as HCC. However, there is a lack in the literature exploring the HCC effect in the dc-link capacitors. Thus, the main objective of this work is perform a further analysis in the HCC operation effects on the dc-link capacitor. The influences of the harmonic order, amplitude and phase angles on the dc-link capacitor are explored. In addition, thermal experimental results of the dc-link capacitor temperatures are performed to evidence the simulation results. Based on the results obtained in this work, the HCC affects the dc-link capacitor power losses and lifetime consumption. The harmonic order directly affects the dc-link power losses and it is higher when the 5 th and 7 th harmonic orders are compensated simultaneously. In addition, the compensation of 7 th harmonic order presents higher power losses than the 5 th harmonic component. It was also observed that harmonic phase-angle does not present significant effect in the dc-link capacitor power losses.

Polypropylene (PP) is an electrical insulation material, and it can store electrostatic charge easily once they have friction with the metal or rubber rollers. Herein we present electrostatic issues in non-woven fabric manufacturing based on the roll to roll production processes. By using portable electrostatic-field meter measurements, we provide a low-cost and highly effective solution for discharging electrostatic charge before exposed or in contact with the operators, and we also identify where to install charge-dissipation technology to make it most useful. We employed the benefit of a highly and localized fringe field to discharge the electrostatic charge along the edge of the grounded metal rod placed at ~30 cm away. After placing the metal rod, the average of electrostatic potential of winding stock roll during spinning is decreased ~10 times, corresponding to ~0.2 μc/m 3 accumulated electrostatic charge on synthetic fabrics. The electric field distribution via the finite element method was illustrated corresponding to the reduction of electrostatic charge distribution in PP winding stock roll before and after inserting the grounded metal rod.

This paper introduces ZETA, a new MATLAB library for Zonotope-based EsTimation and fAult diagnosis of discrete-time systems. It features user-friendly implementations of set representations based on zonotopes, namely zonotopes, constrained zonotopes, and line zonotopes, in addition to a basic implementation of interval arithmetic. This library has capabilities starting from the basic set operations with these sets, including propagations through nonlinear functions using various approximation methods. The features of ZETA allow for reachability analysis and state estimation of discrete-time linear, nonlinear, and descriptor systems, in addition to active fault diagnosis of linear systems. Efficient order reduction methods are also implemented for the respective set representations. Deep learning (DL) has significantly advanced various industries, including semiconductors, by providing sophisticated methods for analyzing emerging device data. Transfer learning (TL), a prominent DL topology, leverages knowledge from a pre-trained model to improve the performance of a specific target task. This study aims to apply TL to predict the impact of work function fluctuation (WKF) on the variability of threshold voltage (σVTH) in gate-all-around silicon nanosheet field-effect transistors (GAA Si NS FETs). We used TL to transfer knowledge from models trained on 1-channel (1ch) GAA Si NS FETs to more complex 4-channel (4ch) counterparts. The prediction accuracy is evaluated by using the mean square error(MSE), root mean square error (RMSE), and the mean absolute error(MAE) metrics. Our TL approach achieved an error rate of less than 1%, demonstrating high accuracy in predicting WKF effects on σ VTH of 4ch GAA Si NS FETs using only 500 samples. This study presents a pioneering application of TL using a one-dimensional (1D) convolutional neural network (CNN) long short-term memory (LSTM) topology in semiconductor device technology. The results effectively address the challenge of predicting σ VTH variations in advanced GAA Si NS FETs because of WKF, which eliminates the need for extensive semiconductor device simulations. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

In this article, a comprehensive analysis of the approach known as Split-Step Wavelet Parabolic Equation (SSW-PE) in modeling radio wave propagation is presented. The SSW-PE introduces innovations, such as the application of narrow-angle and wide-angle approaches, referred to as NAPE and WAPE, respectively. Furthermore, the SSW-PE demonstrates the incorporation of refractivity variations, modifications in terrain modeling for better representation, and considerations of surface boundary conditions. In addition to its innovative aspects, this study aims to provide a complete guide for effectively replicating the algorithm, thereby promoting the advancement of propagation studies using wavelets. The effectiveness and applicability of this approach are validated through comparative studies with well-established solutions, including the Discrete Mixed Fourier Transform (DMFT) version of the Split-Step Parabolic Equation (SSPE) method. Comparisons with measurements from real propagation cases are also conducted. Statistical analysis confirms the innovative potential of the SSW-PE algorithm, which also offers computational efficiency for rapid and consistent simulations. Thus, this article contributes to a comprehensive and innovative analysis, providing tangible resources for the research community interested in expanding this methodology. © 2024 SBMO/SBMag.

Automatic Translation of Blocking Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problems to Automata Using the Supervisory Control Theory

This work presents an algorithm to automatically translate a Blocking Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem modeling into automata using the Supervisory Control Theory. Different problems of the literature are analyzed in their textual form and the algorithm returns an automaton that implements the closed-loop behavior under the Supervisory Control Theory. A heuristic is applied to find, among all sequences, the sequence that minimizes the makespan. With our approach, we find makespan values near to those in the literature. This methodology faces memory usage boundaries, but it was able to find solutions for instances of some well-known problems.

Recently-demonstrated high-quality three-dimensional (3D) subsurface laser processing inside crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafers opens a door to a wide range of novel applications in multidisciplinary research areas. Using this technique, a novel maskless micro-pillars with precise control on the surface reflection and coverage are successfully fabricated by etching the laser processed region of c-Si wafer. To achieve this, a particular selective wet chemical etching is developed to follow subsurface laser processing of c-Si to reveal the desired 3D structures with smooth surfaces. Here, we report the development of a novel chromium-free chemical etching recipe based on copper nitrate, which yields substantially smooth surfaces at high etch rate and selectivity on the both laser-processed Si surface and subsurface, i.e., without significant etching of the unmodified Si. Our results show that the etch rate and surface morphology are interrelated and strongly influenced by the composition of the adopted etching solution. After an extensive compositional study performed at room temperature, we identify an etchant with a selectivity of over 1600 times for laser-modified Si with respect to unmodified Si. We also support our findings using density functional theory calculations of HF and Cu adsorption energies, indicating significant diversity on the c-Si and laser-modified surfaces. The number of journals, and consequently the number of papers, has grown significantly, which makes it necessary to use suitable tools in systematic literature reviews. Several methodologies have been proposed for this purpose, and one of these methods is the index calculation used to rank the papers in order of importance. This study proposes a new index called the Normalized Index for Ranking Papers to rank the papers in a systematic literature review, which is considered mainly indicators provided by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies journal indicators. For this index calculation, importance weights are assigned by the researchers, and the indicators used in the index are normalized. For ranking the final portfolio, the proposed method considers a weighted average of indicators (impact factors) in which the paper was published and a value that represents approximately the number of citations per year. The journal self-citation index benefits the journals with lower self-citation practices. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was carried out to analyze the final portfolio's results involving Multi-criteria Decision Analysis in airports. The indicators normalization enables the importance of each metric to be decided by the researcher according to the choice of the weights, not by the difference in the indicators’ magnitude. The importance of an article can be proved initially by the journal indicators in which the paper was published and by citations per year. © 2024 The Authors

Extremum Seeking Boundary Control for Euler-Bernoulli Beam PDEs

This paper presents the design and analysis of an extremum seeking (ES) controller for scalar static maps in the context of infinite-dimensional dynamics governed by the 1D Euler-Bernoulli (EB) beam Partial Differential Equation (PDE). The beam is actuated at one end (using position and moment actuators). The map’s input is the displacement at the beam’s uncontrolled end, which is subject to a sliding boundary condition. Notably, ES for this class of PDEs remains unexplored in the existing literature. To compensate for PDE actuation dynamics, we employ a boundary control law via a backstepping transformation and averaging-based estimates for the gradient and Hessian of the static map to be optimized. This compensation controller leverages a Schrödinger equation representation of the EB beam and adapts existing backstepping designs to stabilize the beam. Using the semigroup and averaging theory in infinite dimensions, we prove local exponential convergence to a small neighborhood of the unknown optimal point. Finally, simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the design in optimizing the unknown static map. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Evaluating an e-Learning Platform at graduate School Based on User Experience Evaluation Technique

This study was aimed to evaluate the e-learning platform in a graduate school by using User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). The data were collected from 65 respondents and analyzed using an excel data analysis tool. The results indicate that all six scales of the instrument are consistent except the novelty scale. Also, the calculated means of the scales are slightly positive as all values are greater than 0.8 compared to the UEQ benchmark. Although the respondents show a little positive impression with the platform, all scales means are below average category except efficiency scale which is above average as compared to the benchmark. This indicates that the platform needs more improvement in all aspects of user experience for it to be at least in a good category. The findings discussed in this paper are valuable for all academic stakeholders in various educational institutions which implement interactive e-learning systems as well as practitioners of user experience and developers of e-learning systems.
