Towards a smart reconfiguration process for complex product manufacturing based on industrial robot cells

The cost for companies that can custom their production line with precision and quality, through machining centres and laser cutting machines, is expensive, as the degree of machining freedom increases. Furthermore, the greater the complexity of the product to be manufactured, the more processes and equipment are needed to manufacture it. In this context, this research proposes a smart reconfiguration process for complex product manufacturing, based on industrial robotic manipulators, with 6 or more degrees of freedom, superior to conventional methods. With the integration of SolidWorks and PowerMill software, it was possible to apply the solution in an experimental case of blisk manufacturing milling and laser cutting of an engine head gasket. With CAD, CAM and robot simulation by the PowerMill tool, it was possible to validate the proposed solution, obtaining process data and information of milling and laser cutting. With the analysis of the simulation results, it was possible to identify the limitations of the project, such as (i) restriction in the precision of the machining of the product; (ii) amount of real-time supervision and monitoring information; and (iii) work area limit. However, the project can integrate two manufacturing processes to machine and cut complex parts with flexibility.

Inhibitory effect of standardized Kaempferia parviflora extract on sarcopenia by improving protein metabolism pathways in aged C57BL/6J mice

Background: Sarcopenia is a muscle disease typically characterized by an age-related loss of muscle mass and function, leading to the deterioration of health in older adults. The current study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of standardized Kaempferia parviflora extract (KPE) on sarcopenia and elucidate its underlying molecular mechanisms. Methods: To assess the inhibitory effects of KPE on sarcopenia, 18-month-old C57BL/6J mice were employed as an aged model. The mice were orally administered 100 and 200 mg/kg KPE daily for 8 weeks. Results: KPE improved age-reduced grip strength and exercise endurance. It not only increased hindlimb muscle weight, volume, and myofiber cross-sectional area but also decreased abdominal fat volume and adipose tissue weight. KPE downregulated the mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6 by inactivating nuclear factor kappa B protein expression and increasing the mRNA expression of anti-oxidant enzymes. Moreover, it significantly reduced the mRNA expression of muscle ring finger-1 and muscle atrophy F-box for proteolysis and stimulated the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway for protein translation by stimulating the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathway. KPE also increased the relative mitochondrial DNA content by upregulating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha, nuclear respiratory factor 1, and mitochondrial transcription factor A mRNA expression. Conclusion: This study's findings demonstrate that KPE improves age-induced sarcopenia by regulating protein turnover and mitochondrial homeostasis. We consider a plant equipped with a single protection channel whose demand, failure, and repair times follow exponential distributions. However, we may not know the parameters of these distributions precisely;this is due to variability on them and parameter ranges may be found. This lack of plant specific data gives rise to plant-to-plant data variability. In this sense, the available information may be translated as a probability distribution and it is necessary to perform an uncertainty propagation on the plant accident rate to assess the impact of the variability of the parameters used. As the dramatically increasing power supply of renewable energy (RE) generation penetrates the distribution network, the security of the supply of the network, such as voltage level, is affected by the uncertain power output. The unstable voltage is caused by the tap of the distribution transformer, which is usually a fixed tap. In addition, the locational marginal price (LMP) depends on the number of power supplies from RE generation. The LMP of the whole local system is not lower, although the selling price of RE generation is lower than that of others, which results from the oversupply of RE generation to the network. The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) distribution network in Mae Hon Son City is also affected by the high penetration of renewable energy generation (RE generation). Currently, the proportion of power supply from RE generation is approximately 38% (in May) and 143% (in October) of total power supply to the load. During an oversupply of RE generation, the excess power reverses to PEA transmission network at approximately 8.79 MWh, which results in the security of supply and cost efficiency of distribution network companies such as PEA. The locational marginal price (LMP) in case of high penetration of RE generation is, however, slightly the same price as the non-penetration of RE generation under the Thailand electricity market condition. Therefore, the local generation management and dispatching are consequently considered for local power supply and demand balancing, maintaining the security of supply and reducing power losses and locational marginal price. © 2025 IEEE.

While exact parameter estimation is desired in numerous applications, many adaptive controllers require the fulfillment of the persistency of excitation (PE) condition to achieve that objective. Relaxing the PE condition poses a challenging theoretical problem and many research works have been devoted to addressing this issue. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive robust nonlinear $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ optimal controller for trajectory tracking of mechanical systems subjected to unknown parameters. The proposed method includes an extra term, based on the dynamic regressor extension and mixing (DREM) approach, into the adaptive law which enables exact parameter estimation even without fulfilling the PE condition. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive controller is corroborated with numerical experiments involving a CRS-A465 robot manipulator and comparison analyses with a classic adaptive nonlinear $\mathcal{H}_{\infty}$ controller.

Physically consistent gravitational waveform for capturing beyond general relativity effects in the compact object merger phase

The merger phase of compact binary coalescences is the strongest gravity regime that can be observed. To test the validity of general relativity (GR) in strong gravitational fields, we propose a gravitational waveform parametrized for deviations from GR in the dynamical and nonlinear regime of gravity. Our fundamental idea is that perturbative modifications to a GR waveform can capture possible deviations in the merger phase that are difficult to model in a specific theory of gravity. One of notable points is that our waveform is physically consistent in the sense that the additional radiative losses of energy and angular momentum associated with beyond-GR modifications are included. Our prescription to ensure physical consistency in the whole coalescence process is expected to be applicable to any deviation from the standard model of compact binary coalescence, such as the extended models of gravity or the environmental effects of compact objects, as long as perturbative modifications are considered. Based on the Fisher analysis and the compatibility with Einstein-dilaton Gauss-Bonnet waveforms, we show that our parametrization is a physically consistent minimal one that captures the deviations in the nonlinear regime.

Understanding the precise molecular arrangement of chiral supramolecular polymers is essential not only to comprehend complex superstructures like proteins and DNA but also for the development of next-generation optoelectronic materials,including materials displaying high-performance circularly polarized luminescence(CPL).Herein,we report the first chiral supramolecular polymer systems based on hydrazone–pyridinium conjugates comprising alkyl chains of different lengths,which afforded control of the apparent supramolecular *** supramolecular chirality is governed basically by the remote chiral centers of alkyl chains,helicity inversion was achieved by controlling the conditions under which the hydrazone building blocks underwent aggregation(i.e.,solvent compositions or temperature).More importantly,the addition of water to the system led to aggregationinduced hydrazone deprotonation,which resulted in a completely different selfassembly *** water molecules played an essential role,forming the assembly’s channel-like backbone,around which hydrazone molecules gathered as a result of hydrogen bonding *** co-assembly of an achiral hydrazone luminophore with the given supramolecular polymer system allowed the fabrication of a novel CPL-active hydrazone-based material exhibiting a high maximum value for the photoluminescence dissymmetry factor of -2.6×10^(-2).

In the realm of research, the global health challenge posed by lung cancer remains pronounced, contributing substantially to annual cancer-related fatalities. The critical imperative lies in the early identification of pulmonary nodules, frequently indicative of impending lung cancer, to enhance patient outcomes and diminish mortality rates. Computed Tomography (CT) imaging stands out as a pivotal diagnostic instrument for the timely detection of these nodules. The swift proliferation of medical imaging data has underscored the pressing necessity for precise and efficient methodologies dedicated to nodule segmentation and measurement. These approaches are crucial in assisting radiologists in their diagnostic and clinical decision-making endeavors. In this study, we introduced a thorough method for analyzing lung nodules, leveraging dataset from Far Eastern Memorial Hospital (FEMH) comprising original CT images and manually annotated ground truth masks obtained with the assistance of radiologists at FEMH. This dataset is utilized for the segmentation of nodules. We employed advanced deep learning models, specifically the U-Net architecture, identified as the optimal model through our training process. We made substantial progress in nodule segmentation, attaining an Intersection over Union (IoU) score of 0.824 and a Dice Coefficient of 0.903 for the FEMH dataset. Furthermore, our performance improved when utilizing the merged dataset comprising FEMH and Luna16, yielding an IoU score of 0.862 and a Dice Coefficient of 0.926. Luna16 has been extensively utilized in numerous studies related to nodule detection and segmentation. In the next phase of the study, the best-performing model from our segmentation phase was utilized to predict nodule masks on the merged dataset. Subsequently, we measured the size of each predicted nodule by comparing it with the size ground truth mask in millimeters. Background and Objectives: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common oral cancer, with high mortality rates, making early detection crucial. Malignant transformation is preceded by oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), with leukoplakia being the most frequent. Epithelial dysplasia (ED) is a key histological feature for predicting the risk of progression to OSCC. However, its diagnosis relies on subjective visual assessment by pathologists, which is influenced by experience and emotional state. This study aims to develop a Machine Learning (ML), based methodology to assist in ED detection in leukoplakia lesions. Methods: The proposed methodology integrates histopathological image analysis with complementary patient data. Epithelial regions were selected for cutout extraction based on pathologist knowledge and combined with risk factors from patient data. A multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) was trained and evaluated. Performance was compared with a pre-trained convolutional neural network (ResNet-50V2) using the McNemar test. Results: The MLP-ANN achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9484. No statistically significant difference was found between the proposed method and the pre-trained CNN. However, the proposed approach was approximately 9.7 times faster in computational time. Conclusions: The ML-based methodology demonstrated high classification performance and computational efficiency. Refining the confidence criterion for intermediate classification results may further enhance its diagnostic accuracy, supporting pathologists in ED detection. © 2025, The Authors. The advancement of graphene has created a need in exploring its properties for different applications. One way to explore its properties is by reducing its hydrophobicity. To overcome hydrophobicity of graphene, surfactants have been used in functionalization, hence improving the surface properties of the graphene monolayer. Therefore, investigating surfactant treatment for CVD graphene becomes useful in understanding the surface property effects on graphene. This study utilizes CVD graphene on silicon substrates. Its treatment was done with varying concentrations of Sodium Cholate (SC) for different treatment times. These samples were then characterized using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) to investigate the surface properties of the samples before and after treatment. To be optimized, the graphene must remain attached to the silicon substrate. The result shows that the integrity of the graphene, which is basically the Sp2 structure, is preserved as there was no delamination from the substrate even after treatment for as long as 2 hours in 1% weight/volume concentration of the SC solution.
