Performance analysis of concrete with repurposed industrial glass waste

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the repurposed use of lapidated industrial glass waste in substitution of Portland cement in conventional concretes. Replacement ratios of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% with respect to mass of cement were tested. The glass residue was subjected to laser granulometry and X-ray fluorescence to determine its granulometry, specific mass, surface area and pozzolanic activity. The effects of cement substitution on performance were evaluated with compression strength tests, physical property measurements, capillary water absorptivity, electrical resistance and ultrasonic wave propagation in samples aged 7 days, 28 days, 56 days and 90 days. Chemical analysis determined the decrease of some elements due to pozzolanic and expansion reactions while pozzolanic activity was measured at 98%. Electrical resistance, which was related to concrete durability, obtained significant results with a 30% substitution ratio. Capillary water absorption was mostly unchanged with slight improvements with a 20% replacement ratio. Physical properties and ultrasonic wave propagation were consistent with compression strength results: higher strength was related to lower void index and total absorption, which resulted in higher density and higher wave propagation speed. Although no substantial results were obtained, the relative increase in compression strength was high, which highlighted the effectiveness of substituting cement with repurposed ground glass waste. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This research delves into enhancing local area power stability by integrating battery energy storage systems (BESS) with photovoltaic (PV) systems to address and accelerate the damping of post-fault oscillations following short-circuit disturbances within power grids incorporating variable renewable energy sources. Focused on implementing a power oscillation damping (POD) mechanism within PV plants, this study aims to mitigate post-fault oscillations effectively within a specified timeframe. The proposed POD within the PV plant is strategically designed to augment the grid's resilience by supplying additional active and reactive power in response to system demands post-disturbance. The integration of a 25 MW BESS has demonstrated a significant enhancement in the system's recovery speed, reducing oscillation duration from 60 seconds to 45 seconds. Moreover, a configuration with double PV systems and a 50 MW BESS further reduced the oscillation duration to 42 seconds. Utilizing PSCAD software, this study presents an innovative approach to visualize the system's behavior post-short-circuit disturbances, confirming the efficacy of BESS integration in improving system stability and reliability. These results pave the way for further exploration of optimal BESS sizing and placement strategies to maximize grid resilience. © 2024 IEEE.

Recently, there has been a significant advancement in text-to-image diffusion models, leading to groundbreaking performance in 2D image generation. These advancements have been extended to 3D models, enabling the generation of novel 3D objects from textual descriptions. This has evolved into NeRF editing methods, which allow the manipulation of existing 3D objects through textual conditioning. However, existing NeRF editing techniques have faced limitations in their performance due to slow training speeds and the use of loss functions that do not adequately consider editing. To address this, here we present a novel 3D NeRF editing approach dubbed ED-NeRF by successfully embedding real-world scenes into the latent space of the latent diffusion model (LDM) through a unique refinement layer. This approach enables us to obtain a NeRF backbone that is not only faster but also more amenable to editing compared to traditional image space NeRF editing. Furthermore, we propose an improved loss function tailored for editing by migrating the delta denoising score (DDS) distillation loss, originally used in 2D image editing to the three-dimensional domain. This novel loss function surpasses the well-known score distillation sampling (SDS) loss in terms of suitability for editing purposes. Our experimental results demonstrate that ED-NeRF achieves faster editing speed while producing improved output quality compared to state-of-the-art 3D editing models. To enhance production planning efficiency, it's crucial to have well-structured models that align with metaheuristic and other optimization techniques. This research conducts a comparative analysis of three unique metaheuristic methods: sanitized-teaching-learning-based optimization (sTLBO), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Differential Evolution (DE) with a termination criterion of equal number of functional evaluations. The primary focus lies on profit-maximizing production planning within a single-level framework, encompassing intricate domain constraints, nonlinear costs, budget limitations and raw material constraints. The paper introduces three correction-based solution approaches. Upon evaluating 300 distinct instances of the problem, the study reveals that s-TLBO integrated with correction-based approach 1 and 3 consistently outperforms the other methods when it comes to devising optimal production plans for a Saudi Arabian petrochemical industry. This industry scenario involves 24 products, 54 processes, and three raw materials. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel interleaved inverter topology for DC-AC conversion in power electronics applications. The proposed topology leverages a semiconductor-level interleaving technique to overcome the limitations of conventional interleaved inverters. Through comprehensive analysis and simulation studies, it is demonstrated that the interleaved inverter achieves higher power density and improved ripple frequency as compared to conventional counterparts. One of the main advantages of the proposed technology over conventional interleaving converters is the use of a single inductor, which enables its use not only in grid-tied applications but also in electric drives. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper presents two solution strategies: a penalty-based and a correction-based approach. Analyzing 300 unique instances of the problem reveals that s-TLBO implemented with correction-based approach consistently outperforms the other methods in devising optimal production plans for two Saudi Arabian petrochemical industries with 24 products, 54 processes, and three raw materials for plant 1 and two raw materials for plant 2. © 2024 IEEE.

One strategy for emission reduction in Indonesia is the dedieselization program, replacing diesel power plants with renewables. Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) type Small Modular Reactor (SMR) is also a consideration. This study aims to compare fuel performance in SMRs. Four fuel types with varying fissile and fertile nuclides but equal fissile mass percentages were assessed: U235- U238, U235-Th232, U233-U238, and U233-Th232, using PIJ SRAC 2006 and JENDL 4.0. Parameters include neutron multiplication factor, conversion ratio, and isotope production. Results indicated that U233-U238 has a highest initial neutron multiplication factor, 1.55. Substituting uranium-238 with thorium-232 boosts neutron flux and conversion, reducing nuclear proliferation risk. While initial neutron multiplication may not be highest, thorium-232 can produce uranium-233 with high initial neutron multiplication factor. This research aids fuel selection for Indonesia SMR dedieselization program. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Desiccant-coated heat exchangers (DCHEs) enable energy-efficient dehumidification, alleviating the overall heat load on vapor compression refrigeration systems. However, conventional desiccants have limited water uptake capacities and high regeneration temperature requirements. This work presents ternary composite desiccants comprising the metal-organic framework, MIL-101(Cr) (where MIL denotes Materials Institute Lavoisier), the superabsorbent polymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and hygroscopic salts for enhanced moisture sorption. Gravimetric water sorption analyses revealed that desiccants containing lithium chloride (LiCl) attained water uptakes greater than their calcium chloride- and copper (II) sulfate-containing counterparts. Subsequent cyclic tests identified the optimal MIL-101(Cr)/PVA/LiCl composite that adsorbed and desorbed moisture readily. From its water sorption isotherm, the 3MIL-101(Cr)/1PVA/1 LiCl desiccant has a water uptake capacity of 2.49g {water} g desiccant-1 - nearly double that of MIL-101(Cr) and more than nine times that of silica gel. When coated onto a prototype heat exchanger, the 3MIL-101(Cr)/1PVA/1 LiCl composite demonstrated a gravimetric water uptake more than double that of the silica gel-coated control across three adsorption-desorption cycles. Moreover, low-grade waste heat of 50°C could partially regenerate these DCHEs, leaving behind residual moisture of less than 0.5g{water} gdesiccant-1. Consequently, the 3MIL-101(Cr)/1PVA/1LiCl-coated heat exchangers are effective dehumidifiers for addressing the latent heat load towards energy savings in cooling systems. © 2024 IEEE.
