Designing a building material with high fire resistance is crucial for minimizing the impact of catastrophic fire. Geopolymer, a new type of binder synthesized by the reaction of aluminosilicate sources with an alkaline solution, has been extensively studied as it offers comparable or even high durability when compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The concentration of the alkaline solution is one of the important factors that affect the durability;however, there is very little data on the heat resistance of geopolymer activated with potassium hydroxide. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of molarity of potassium hydroxide on the heat resistance of fly ash-slag blended geopolymer paste. The potassium hydroxide (10, 12, and 14 M) and sodium silicate solutions were prepared as activator solutions. The initial heat curing at 70 ºC for 24 h was applied. In addition, an OPC specimen was also prepared for comparison. After curing for 28 days, some specimens were exposed to high temperatures (500, 750, and 950 ºC). The compressive strength of unexposed and exposed geopolymer and OPC paste specimens was measured. The results showed that the increase of molarity of potassium hydroxide solution increased the heat resistance of geopolymer in terms of retained compressive strength. Moreover, the geopolymer specimens could maintain higher compressive strength than that of OPC paste when exposed to high temperatures up to 950 ºC. This is attributed to the mineral composition of geopolymer, which is different from OPC paste, as studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The increasing public demand for electric vehicles also impacts the demand for electric motors. The prominent problem electric motors faces are excess heat when operating because it affects the age and performance of the electric motor. Installing fins on the electric motor housing is one way to reduce heat on the electric motor. In this study, a comparison of the six-fin design was carried out, and the effect on the thermal characteristics of the electric motor was examined. Fins are mounted radially and axially. The six types of fin designs studied are radial fins-round, radial fins-square, radial fins-servo, axial fins-round, axial fins-square, and axial fins-servo. The research uses the lumped circuit models method, and the software used is Motor-CAD. The type of electric motor being studied is a brushless permanent magnet machine (BPM) with an internal rotor. The study's findings indicate that the fin's performance in cooling the electric motor depends on its area. The lower temperatures in the axial fins-servo and radial fins-square compared to other fin designs are due to the broader area of the axial fins-servo and radial fins-square compared to the others. Axially mounted fins provide better cooling than radially mounted fins. For example, the winding temperature on the axial fins-servo is 140.54°C, and the winding temperature on the radial fins-square is 140.86°C even though the area of the axial fins-servo is 22.7% smaller than the area of the radial fins-servo. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a pose synchronization method for semi-autonomous dynamic robotic swarms with a passivityshort human operator. In the human-robot network, a human operator sends a command signal to and receives visual information from only a part of the robotic group. In this setting, the proposed dynamic control scheme achieves not only pose synchronization of all mobile robots but also convergence to the reference pose that the human operator specifies. The main advantage of the proposed method is to guarantee convergence of not only the position but also the orientation to the reference ones in the human-robot network. Finally, we provide human-in-the-loop simulation results through the human operation using a tablet PC to illustrate the performance of the proposed control method. © 2023 IEEE.

Urban services, such as water and energy resources, are usually consumed more in a tourism city, than in other city types. The water-energy nexus also contributes to the CO2 emissions from urban areas. The purpose of this research is to investigate the link between water distribution systems, electricity consumption, and energy-related CO2 emissions from water networks in Pattaya city, Thailand. These networks operate under the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA). The water distribution system was modeled in EPANET software, to simulate and examine the water supply capacity in the service pipes, to ensure that it meets the requirement set by PWA. Data were collected from PWA, in terms of the pressure and flow rate of the water supply and the amount of electricity consumption. The current water distribution system consists of 18 junctions, a with flow rate of 1,000 m3/hour and pressure at 45 m. The electricity consumption is 720 kWh/day and energy-related CO2 emissions are 419.11 kgCO2eq/day. The water distribution system was modeled and analyzed to find the optimum flow rate and pressure for the least electricity consumption. The results show that the optimum solution is the flow rate of 1,500 m3/hour and a pressure at 50 m. Consequently, the electricity consumption is 300 kWh/day, while CO2 emissions are reduced to 174.63 kgCO2eq/day. The findings from this study would benefit the PWA by reducing the electricity consumption and CO2 emissions equivalent to 109 MWh/year and 63.73 tCO2eq, respectively. © 2022 IEEE.

The quality of silicon ingots is paramount in semiconductor manufacturing as defects profoundly influence the crystal integrity and device performance. This study investigates the impact of cooling-tube configurations on defect formation during the Czochralski process. Comprehensive modeling and simulation elucidated the intricate relationship between the presence of a cooling tube and the evaluation of point defects within silicon ingots. The results show that cooling tubes augment the axial temperature gradient and shift the point-defect behavior from vacancy-rich to interstitial-dominated regions with an increase in the axial temperature gradient of up to 1.6 times. Additionally, cooling tubes impede the formation of agglomerated defects by reducing point-defect mobility and propagation time, resulting in a reduction of the agglomerated defect count by up to 30% compared to processes without cooling tubes. Experiments validated the simulation findings, demonstrating a notable decrease in agglomerated defect counts. These insights underscore the potential of optimized cooling-tube designs for enhancing semiconductor device performance and manufacturing yield, thereby driving progress in electronics and beyond. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The communication system is essential for the devices used in IoT. Nevertheless, the consumption caused by transmitting and receiving data is a concern in many scenarios. That is due to these devices commonly having limited energy and computational capacities. Transmission of redundant or irrelevant samples frequently wastes the device's resources. Furthermore, Storing a large amount of redundant data could consume storage space and not offer any benefit. Data Compression (DC) methods are a potential solution. DC could reduce communication usage and storage demand. This research proposes the Training Swing Door Trending (TSDT) for being implemented in IoT Devices. TSDT is a new algorithm that improves the classic Swing Door Trending (STD). They represent the data by trend lines and have a constant computational complexity. TSDT has a training step for the automatic configuration of its parameters. This article additionally presents the Compression Factor (C-Score), a new quality metric to analyze the compression results in lossy DC methods. C-Score takes as a basis the F-Score, a measure of predictive performance. The C-Score uses the Compression and Error metrics to evaluate the compression performance in Lossy Algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.

Local governments require new techniques and innovative approaches to assess initiatives to support the transition towards carbon neutrality. This paper presents a methodological approach for integrated building energy modeling and analysis of the impacts of energy conservation measures (ECMs) and energy-related CO2 emissions in urban areas. To accomplish this goal, the proposed methodology follows four steps: (1) developing a building stock model for urban databases using a geographic information system (GIS) and QGIS software;(2) creating a detailed archetype-based building stock model using OpenStudio and EnergyPlus;(3) carrying out a scenario analysis of possible ECMs and pathways to achieve carbon neutrality;and (4) analyzing energy savings and energy-related CO2 emissions. The developed methodology was applied to a tourism urban area, using Pattaya city as a case study. Based on the GIS building model, six archetypes were identified from all residential buildings, including hotels located in the study area. Prototypes of representative building energy models were simulated for a reference case with four ECMs. The results indicated that the building stock in the reference case used 497,669.05 TJ annually and emitted 80,470.32 ktC02eq. Of the four ECMs, a change to double glazing with low-E coating gave the highest energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions. This measure led to energy savings of 9,342.82 TJ and emission reductions of 356.23 ktC02eq compared to the reference case. Local governments and stakeholders can benefit from the proposed methodological approach for decision making related to energy and carbon neutrality pathways. © 2022 IEEE.

The world is currently witnessing a rapid transformation in the production and utilization of electrical energy. The traditional centralized generation model for electric power is swiftly evolving into a more decentralized system, known as Distributed Generation (DG), which incorporates renewable energy sources situated closer to end-users. This shift towards DG has paved the way for the emergence of grid-forming converters, which play a pivotal role in enhancing voltage and frequency stability within microgrids (MGs) and isolated applications. This transformation is primarily driven by the increasing prevalence of inverter-based energy resources. In isolated MGs, ensuring high power quality becomes a paramount concern due to the presence of potentially disruptive loads and the risk of resonance issues arising from the integration of multiple electronically interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs) and loads. This study focuses on assessing the performance of the Zero Harmonic Distortion (ZHD) control method when applied to grid-forming converters in both stand-alone and parallel operation modes. The distinctive feature of this converter lies in its inherent ability to generate a sinusoidal voltage source without the need for capacitive filtering components, which can adversely affect cost, efficiency, and size while potentially contributing to resonance problems. This is achieved through a judicious combination of harmonic cancellation within a three-winding transformer and the utilization of Selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (SHE PWM) dismissing a closed-loop control structure. Simulation results presented in this work demonstrate the satisfactory performance of the ZHD grid-forming converter. © 2023 IEEE.

The 2011 flood in Thailand exposed significant vulnerabilities in industrial areas, highlighting the necessity for enhanced disaster risk management through Area-Business Continuity Management (Area-BCM). This preliminary study focuses on identifying how stakeholders rely on information from each other to improve disaster preparedness and response. The research involves systematically identifying Area-BCM stakeholders and designing interview questions, which are evaluated by experts using the Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) to ensure relevance and clarity. All interview questions surpassed the IOC threshold of 0.5, confirming their effectiveness in capturing information interdependencies. Expert feedback led to refinements in the questions, underscoring the importance of tailored data collection. This initial plan provides a critical foundation for understanding information interdependence and highlights the importance of well-designed data collection methods. The findings have significant implications for developing more resilient disaster management strategies in industrial areas, emphasizing the need for precise and relevant stakeholder communication to enhance Area-BCM effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.
