Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) is a wireless technology that utilizes frequencies with a wide bandwidth to provide coverage and positioning with centimeter-level accuracy. This technology has been widely applied in various fields, such as activity recognition, indoor localization, and through-wall radar. One of the main advantages of UWB is its ability to determine the location of objects with an accuracy of up to 10 cm, making it ideal for tracking moving assets in complex and space-sensitive environments. In this study, a UWB-based positioning system uses a minimum of three anchors and one tag to measure the distance between devices. However, some conditions can reduce the measurement accuracy. To overcome this, this study proposes the use of the Support Vector Regression (SVR) algorithm to improve the accuracy of the system's positioning. SVR is a regression method that supports linear and non-linear regression, with the aim of finding the optimal hyperplane that minimizes prediction errors. The results of the study show that UWB combined with SVR can provide significant accuracy, with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 17 cm on the X coordinate and 19 cm on the Y coordinate, and a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 4 cm on the X coordinate and 5 cm on the Y coordinate in Line of Sight (LOS) conditions which under 20 cm. This confirms that the combination of UWB and SVR is an effective approach in improving the accuracy of indoor positioning. © 2024 IEEE.

Recently, Japan has been facing various social issues, and to solve these problems, it is necessary to create a society where diverse people can live comfortably. To build such a society, appropriate support tailored to individuals is required, necessitating the analysis of various types of information to understand the people's needs at any given moment. In particular, analyzing non-verbal elements such as posture, facial expressions, and gestures is crucial, as these naturally indicate a person's condition. Therefore, this study focuses on human gestures, one of the non-verbal elements, and proposes a gesture recognition method using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and K-Means. We demonstrated that symbolic gesture recognition is possible by recording arm trajectories from skeletal measurements with an RGB-D camera. © 2024 IEEE.

Modern machining processes have been rapidly evolving into much more sophisticated forms. However, even with such sophistication in hand, the effect of chatter remains to be a significant problem. To date, engineers keep referring to the traditional chatter stability lobe to address the problem of limiting themselves in creativity to achieve high efficiency. The research aims to observe the vibration reduction along the boring process achieved by adding one type of DVA called Spring Radial Vibration Damper (SRVD) onto the workpiece. The workpiece is a cylindrical rod with the ratio of overhang length to a diameter at 6:1. The experiment conducted in different depths of cut (DoC) varies at 0.25 mm, 0.2 mm, and 0.15 mm. The experiment results show a comparison between the main system and without the SRVD in a graphical representation of the dynamic response, percentage of RMS reduction in each parameter, and surface finish of each parameter. This paper concludes that SRVD can be beneficial for the cutting process within the unstable area of the chatter stability lobe. It will worsen the cutting process if the parameters still lie within the stable area. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

A wideband black-box model is proposed to represent the transient response of an inductive voltage transformer used in 15-kV class distribution systems in Brazil. The proposed model is used to evaluate the surge transfer characteristics of the voltage transformer considering different loads for the application of a step-like impulse voltage at primary side. The model is built as a Norton-type equivalent circuit that is valid from 10 Hz to 10 MHz. It is demonstrated that the model is able to accurately reproduce the transient waveforms measured at the transformer secondary side for the application of impulse voltages at the primary side in all tested cases. © 2023 IEEE.

The present work deals with the development of an embedded Internet of Things (IoT) system for monitoring the temperature of a photovoltaic system at different points, to enable the analysis of the efficiency of the solar system based on the thermal effect, considering the characteristics climate in the Amazon region. The module created was built and installed in a photovoltaic solar plant located at the Federal University of Pará. For the analyses, the regions of interest for monitoring the panels were considered, which are: the surface of the generator module in contact with the sun;the shaded area of the panel and the ambient temperature. Satisfactory results were obtained regarding the operation of the embedded system, which proved to be ideal for monitoring solar panels due to the ease of updating, communication, and data visualization. ©2023 IEEE.

Severe deterioration in the insulation system can interrupt the operation of high voltage electrical machines. Concerning hydrogenerators, unexpected interruptions result in important losses to both energy companies and consumers. Recent proposals for automatic partial discharge analysis, an effective approach to prevent failure in high voltage equipment, are mainly based on deep learning. Their performance, however, relies upon the availability of huge, and commonly expensive, datasets. Besides, if models are intended to be trained from scratch, significant computational resources are required. This work compares three fine-Tuning strategies applied to a pre-Trained convolutional neural network for partial discharge classification. We use phase-resolved partial discharge data, obtained during normal operation of hydrogenerators at Tucuruí (Pará, Brazil) power plant, to re-Train the last layer of a deep classifier originally conceived to identify partial discharges in a different context. Our results demonstrate that effective transfer learning is achieved by using cross-validation and data augmentation techniques. © 2022 IEEE.

In the thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) industry, the competition is fierce, and the external failure cost is high. To improve the quality of released products, sampling inspection under outgoing quality control (OQC) is conducted before products are released. Owing to the variety and complexity of inspection items, the task must be carried out manually while realising automation is difficult. Traditional random sampling inspection is limited by sampling quantity, manpower, and material resources. To effectively improve acceptable quality levels, this paper proposes a quality predictive monitoring framework tailored to the production and inspection characteristics of the TFT-LCD industry. This framework includes real-time automatic quality monitoring based on an optimal machine learning prediction model with two-phase feature creation, and it also addresses OQC inspection capacity constraints. Experimental results show the prediction performance based on proposed model is better than the traditional random sampling process. In practice, superior average outgoing quality improves by more than 70% at the same sampling level. In addition, the features of the process can be further controlled and managed based on the prediction model to monitor the key parameters in real time and respond to abnormalities quickly, thereby further improving the quality of released products. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Purpose: Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) affects more than 100 million adults worldwide and is one of the primary diseases leading to blindness and affecting the eye’s retina. Few papers mention its impact on the anterior segment of the eye. Methods: We present a novel bond graph model of the human eye calibrated with data from the literature to simulate the effects of retinopathy on lens behavior. Through mathematical representation in state space and transfer functions, we simulate the dynamic responses of the physiological and pathological systems. Results: The dynamic response to impulse inputs shows a distinct peak amplitude (0.01 difference) and transient time (0.0001 s) for PDR and Healthy systems at Region B (lens and ciliary muscle). Qualitative increase in ocular vasculature aggravation attenuates PDR dynamic response to unitary step input compared to Healthy (50% decay at 20 days of simulation) at Region B. Conclusions: The model suggests the potential impact of PDR on ciliary muscle behavior, which can have a clinical translation on diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment of the disease. It can be used for future studies on the effects of retinopathy on different ocular regions. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical engineering.

This work addresses the problem of adaptive control of Euler-Lagrange systems considering unknown parameters without the hypothesis that the persistence of excitation (PE) condition holds. A systematic framework to obtain linear regression equations in accordance with the dynamic regressor extension and mixing (DREM) technique is proposed involving the notion of the Euler-Lagrange first integral. Then, we develop a novel robust nonlinear adaptive H∞ controller capable of ensuring both convergence of the estimated unknown parameters and trajectory tracking in finite-time under a more relaxed condition than the PE assumption. The effectiveness of the proposed robust nonlinear adaptive H∞ controller is corroborated through numerical experiments with a simplified CRS-A465 robot manipulator. © 2024 IEEE.

The building sector represents high potential to address the energy use and occupants' comfort and well-being. This paper aims to proposed a methodological framework to assess energy and thermal comfort performance in buildings. The research framework was applied in an educational building using a library of Dhurakij Pundit University (DPU), Thailand as a case study. A representative building was modeled using SketchUp plugin with OpenStudio platform and EnergyPlus simulation engine for energy simulation. Thermal comfort parameters were measured in each floor of DPU's library and calculation of thermal comfort indices based on the PMV (Predicted Mean Vote) and PPD (Predicted Percentage Dissatisfied) using the CBE Thermal Comfort Tool. It was found that the simulated energy is in line with the measured data with differences between -0.26% to 3.87%, depending on the floor. The energy intensity of DPU's library is 66.53 kWh/m2/year. Based on the measurements, the PMV and PPD of a reference building are -0.57 and 12%. Ten measures were simulated to assess the energy performance as well as thermal comfort conditions. It was found that seven measures can address both energy performance and thermal comfort in a case study building. © 2022 IEEE.
