Replacing diesel with biogas in decentralized electricity generation systems: a feasibility assessment from workers’ perspective with a modified Human Development Index (HDI) approach

Despite Brazil's high electricity universalization rates, around 1 million Amazon inhabitants need access to this service. An environmentally sustainable way of solving the problem is using biogas from agricultural residues as fuel for electricity cogeneration. This study explores the social effects of this solution, aiming to support more sustainable development for the Brazilian Amazon based on the conscious use of resources and the active involvement of the local population. We compare the social performance of diesel electricity generation (the current scenario) with that of biogas-operated systems for three locations in the Amazon: Aveiro, Porto de Moz, and Prainha. To this end, the following steps were carried out: (i) characterize the analysis scenarios, (ii) determine the personnel associated with each project, (iii) estimate normalized social performance indices considering aspects such as health, education, and income, for the calculation of the Workers' Human Development Index (W-HDI) in different situations, and (iv) analyze the results and formulate a recommendation. The disparities between W-HDI values for the renewable and non-renewable scenarios were less than 10%, even though a slightly better effect concerning diesel systems was observed for Aveiro and Prainha. Conversely, a local biogas energy generation system can generate up to 6 times more wages and 5.5 times more jobs, exhibiting a great potential to reduce social inequalities in these traditionally poor regions. The W-HDI proved a valuable metric for measuring social impacts for a sector devoid of data like the one analyzed herein. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

When I subjects answer questions regarding J variables K times, the data can be stored in a three-mode data set of size I× J× K. Among the various component analysis approaches to summarize such data, Three-mode Principal Component Analysis (3MPCA) is often used. 3MPCA expresses a three-mode data set by means of A-, B-, and C-mode components and a core array, but this approach is not suitable for predicting data at unobserved time points. To handle this issue, the current study suggests a fixed orthonormal polynomial basis for the 3MPCA model. Briefly, we fix the C-mode component matrix with an orthonormal polynomial basis. More specifically, i) measurement time points, and ii) log transformation of the measurement time points were used as an orthonormal polynomial basis. The use of our proposed methods was demonstrated by applying them to a longitudinal data set collected from patients with depression. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This study aimed to identify electroencephalography (EEG)-based neurophysiological biomarkers for monitoring mental fatigue during motor imagery (MI) tasks. We used EEG data recorded from 29 healthy adults during MI tasks. For the preprocessing of the EEG data, we sequentially performed down-sampling into 200 Hz, independent component analysis (ICA), band-pass filtering between 0.5 and 50 Hz, and common average reference (CAR). The preprocessed EEG data were analyzed using a fast Fourier transform (FFT) to calculate spectral power in the δ (0.5–3 Hz), θ (4–7 Hz), α (8–13 Hz), and β (13–30 Hz) frequency bands. Subsequently, seventeen fatigue-related metrics were calculated using individual spectral powers and their combinations. These fatigue-related metrics were averaged for the frontal lobe (F3 and F4), central lobe (FCC3h and FCC4h), parietal lobe (P3 and P4), and occipital lobe (POO1 and POO2). The statistical significance of the average fatigue metrics was evaluated through Pearson correlation analysis with the sequence of trials. This paper evaluates the behavior of harmonic filters subjected to overcurrents during energization. Statistical studies were carried out in ATPDraw considering different techniques to estimate the magnitude of inrush currents, one based on a true RMS estimator and another based on a 60-Hz Fourier filter phasor estimator. The results show that the theoretical limits of the currents used as reference to the overcurrent protection settings presented in literature were consistently defined in the evaluated cases, but that the selection of the decay time could be improved. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, a risk analysis was approached in Contingency Testing with the purpose of serving as a support for the prevention of the disaster situation in an IT environment by a Data Protection Officer (DPO) supported using the Logic Paraconsistent Annotated Evidential Eτ. When observing the aspect of risk, that is, of non-compliance or adherence to ISO 22.301/2013 - Security and resilience—Business continuity management systems—Requirements and Brazilian General Data Protection Law (LGPD), there is a focus on global verification, and it is not always respected in its details interns. In this proposal, simple decision-making is contrasted with those based on Paraconsistent Annotated Logic Eτ. Only a few risk factors were selected for this study concerning contingency tests. Some indications have been analyzed in this context and may present a higher or lower degree of the positive sign, however, situations that lead to uncertainty percentages may occur. It can be concluded that a lot of information has ambiguous and incomplete tendencies. However, this information, instead of being wholly discarded because it is considered totally inconclusive, can be analyzed and optimized decisions can be made. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Global warming and climate change have become pressing environmental challenges, primarily caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, disrupting the natural balance of radiation and leading to rising global temperatures. The consequences of global warming include more frequent and severe heatwaves, changes in precipitation patterns, and increased risks of urban flooding. This research focuses on sustainable stormwater management as a strategy to mitigate urban flooding and adapt to climate change. The study area is the city of Güzelyurt in Northern Cyprus, characterized by a flat topography and limited stormwater infrastructure. The existing stormwater network is insufficient and prone to failures during rainfall events. The research compares the effectiveness and efficiency of two approaches: a traditional approach that involves resizing conduits, and a sustainable approach that implements Low-Impact Development (LID) strategies. LID strategies aim to mimic natural hydrological processes and include measures such as green infrastructure, permeable pavements, rainwater harvesting systems, and vegetative swales. By implementing these strategies, stormwater runoff can be controlled, mitigating the risk of flooding, improving water quality, promoting groundwater recharge, and reducing the demand for freshwater resources. The study utilizes the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software to design the existing stormwater management network and simulate different scenarios. Through the evaluation of performance and analysis of results, the research results demonstrate that the implementation of LID strategies effectively doubled the existing rainfall handling capacity of the stormwater drainage system from 20 mm/h to 40 mm/h. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

SFA-Net: A Selective Features Absorption Network for Object Detection in Rainy Weather Conditions

In recent years, object detection approaches using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have derived major advances in normal images. However, such success is hardly achieved with rainy images due to lack of visibility. Aiming to bridge this gap, in this article, we present a novel selective features absorption network (SFA-Net) to improve the performance of object detection not only in rainy weather conditions but also in favorable weather conditions. SFA-Net accomplishes this objective by utilizing three subnetworks, where the feature selection subnetwork is concatenated with the object detection subnetwork through the feature absorption subnetwork to form a unified model. To promote further advancement in object detection impaired by rain, we propose a large-scale rainy image dataset, named srRain, which contains both synthetic rainy images and real-world rainy images for training and testing purposes. srRain is comprised of 25 900 rainy images depicting diverse driving scenarios in the presence of rain with a total of 181 164 instances interpreting five common object categories. Experimental results display that our SFA-Net reaches the highest mean average precision (mAP) of 77.53% on a normal image set, 62.52% on a synthetic rainy image set, 37.34% on a collected natural rainy image set, and 32.86% on a published real rainy image set, surpassing current state-of-the-art object detectors and the combination of image deraining and object detection models while retaining a high speed. © 2012 IEEE.

Bifunctional hybrid anodes(BHAs),which are both a high-performance active host material for lithium-ion storage as well as a guiding agent for homogeneous lithium metal nucleation and growth,exhibit significant potential as anodes for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries(LIBs).In this study,sulfur-doped hard carbon nanosphere assemblies(S-HCNAs)were prepared through a hydrothermal treatment of a liquid organic precursor,followed by high-temperature thermal annealing with elemental sulfur for application as BHAs for *** a carbonate-based electrolyte containing fluoroethylene carbonate additive,the S-HCNAs showed high lithium-ion storage capacities in sloping as well as plateau voltage sections,good rate capabilities,and stable *** addition,high average Coulombic efficiencies(CEs)of~96.9%were achieved for dual lithium-ion and lithium metal storage *** the LIB full-cell tests with typical NCM811 cathodes,the S-HCNA-based BHAs containing~400 mA h g^(−1) of excess lithium led to high energy and power densities of~500Wh kg^(−1) and~1695Wkg^(−1),respectively,and a stable cycling performance with~100%CEs was achieved.

This study adopted AI to identify the normal and abnormal vibration signals generated during robotic grinding. This study classified four fundamental factors affecting grinding into three levels to obtain a widely used result and designed an L9(3 4) orthogonal array for the grinding experiment. During experimentation, part of the grinding wheels was added weight to produce abnormal vibration signals, which an accelerometer would measure. The study transformed the collected vibration signals into recurrence plots and conducted model training with VGG16 CNN architecture. Finally, this study tested a model with 89.6% training accuracy. The results showed the model could identify whether the recurrence plots stand for normal or abnormal vibrations, with an accuracy of 85%. This means it could predict normal and abnormal grinding conditions and help avoid problems caused by abnormal vibrations. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Korean Society for Precision engineering.

The Impact of Effectiveness of Luggage Arrangement on the Airplane Passengers' Boarding Process

The boarding process is the role activity to maintain the airline's efficiency in the turnaround process on the ground. One of the scenarios to optimize the boarding process is the arrangement of passengers who enter the plane based on the amount of carry-on luggage, adjusted to the selected boarding strategy. This research aims to develop an agent-based simulation model to increase the effectiveness of passengers' boarding process by applying the luggage arrangement method for an airplane with a 180-seat configuration. The simulation results showed that applying the Ascending luggage arrangement method reduced the overall boarding process performance by 6.12%, while the Descending method increased boarding performance by 2.50%, compared to the standard Random method. © 2022 Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
