Currently, developments in mechatronics have enabled the creation of compliant actuators and synthetic muscles, surpassing the constraints of inflexible actuators in assistive robotics systems. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are comprised of an elastomer layer situated amidst two flexible electrodes, able to change dimensions under the influence of an electric voltage. While DEAs can function as autonomous sensors due to their viscoelastic behavior, accurately measuring actuator displacement continues to be an unresolved challenge. In this study, we introduce the development and assessment of a fiber-constrained dielectric elastomer actuator (FCDEA) with embedded optical fiber sensors for displacement measurement through optical potential difference. The DEAs were fabricated with VHB 4910, conductive carbon grease, and PETG as constrain fiber to restrict its displacement to the vertical direction. Silica optical fiber was integrated in the PETG strips and clamps to measure the actuator deformation upon activation. Different fabrication parameters of DEAs were investigated to obtain greater strain rates. DEAs with 90 mm x 90 mm, stretch (λ) = 3.6, and load (τ) = 120 kPa, and 90 mm x 110 mm, λ=3.6, and τ=120 kPa, presented the highest deformation capacity, with 90% and 80%, respectively. Moreover, results showed great linearity between the DEA deformation and optical potential, indicating the proposed configuration is suitable for displacement measurement.

The cardiac muscle is elastic and deformable. Pushing a catheter in contact with the cardiac muscle surface to conduct focal energy-based ablative therapies, such as RF ablation, requires an adequate electrode-tissue contact surface to transfer the energy to the target site. In this regard, the relationship between the contact force (CF) and the resulting mechanical response is still unclear, in particular, the insertion depth (ID) and the diameter of the surface deformation. The objective of this study was to quantify these relationships using an ex vivo model and a computational model. A rigid bar with a 2.3 mm diameter blunt tip (mimicking a 7Fr standard ablation catheter) was placed at a perpendicular orientation on a fragment of the porcine heart. CF values ranged from 10 to 80g. We used ANSYS to build a Mooney-Rivlig model of 3 parameters based on hyperelastic material and to simulate the same conditions as in the experiments. This paper presents a trajectory-tracking approach for quadrotors using a tilt-prioritized attitude controller. The proposed control framework prioritizes tilt angles (the direction of the body z-axis) over yaw orientation to improve the translational trajectory tracking performance. A linear modulation parameter is introduced to enable a smooth transition between the UAV only tilting and the UAV tilting and orientating in yaw. Additionally, since it does not use operations with quaternions, matrix multiplication, or matrix inverses, the proposed controller is computationally efficient and easy to implement, making it well-suited for micro or small aerial vehicles. Real-world experiments validate the proposed method, demonstrating its effectiveness in agile trajectory tracking.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are a valuable source of data for a wide range of real-time applications, due to their functionality, availability, adaptability, and maneuverability. Working as mobile sensors, they can provide a cost-effective solution for extremely complex tasks, such as inspection, air-to-ground communications, search and rescue, surveillance, among others. Nevertheless, the robots needs to navigate in quite distinct environments and in different dynamism levels, usually facing unpredicted situations, very often using limited sensing and computing capabilities. A large number of solutions to this problem has been featured by the scientific community in the last years, some of them based on machine-learning (ML) methods. Due to its great capability to deal with big data and complexity, as well as its speedy and high-accuracy processing, the ML framework has been used to improve existing technologies and control techniques. In this context, its adoption in several UAV navigation strategies is expected to provide solutions for various problems where UAVs are used in real-time applications. Thus, in order to contextualize the most recent advances, this work provides a detailed survey of relevant researches in which ML techniques have been used in UAV navigation to improve some functional aspects, such as energy-efficiency, communication, execution time, resource management, obstacle avoidance, and path planning. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

UV exposure, soil burial, and storage ability tests were carried out on biocomposite films with different concentrations of nanocrystal cellulose to study their biodegradability and morphological properties compared to neat whey protein films. The addition of nanocrystal cellulose as a natural filler to the whey protein based film can change a variety of properties such as strength, shelf life, biodegradability, and resistance to environmental conditions that are required in food packaging. The degradation films were assessed by UV exposure and soil burial tests. On the other hand, packaging ability is analyzed through storage tests under controlled conditions. After the analysis, changes in physical, chemical, and morphological properties were observed in the biocomposite film. From these results, we can conclude that the whey protein film with the addition of 3% nanocrystal cellulose would be a more favorable choice because of its better properties and suitability for the proposed biodegradable food packaging application. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, we performed a simulation for a physical resistive random-access device (RRAM) to propose an improved model representing its electrical characteristics. Voltage ThrEshold Adaptive Memristor (VTEAM) model that operates based on the voltage threshold of the device adapted for the RRAM simulation. We applied some physical features to the model to adjust the internal state variable to improve the simulation results. The internal state variable used in the model was designed after the physical feature such as the distance between the end of the filament and the electrode of the device. Therefore, applying some of these physical conditions affects the simulation results. Simulation results with the newly applied model showed optimized I-V characteristics that resemble the physical device's behavior more than the existing model. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper proposes a null space-based behavioral controller embedding an adaptive sliding mode control law to guide the formation of two UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) carrying a cable-suspended load when tracking a trajectory. This controller is based on hierarchically organizing the two subtasks moving the formation accordingly and keeping the formation shape. The influence of the load on the UAVs, including the force dragging each UAV towards the other, is dealt with as a perturbation, which the sliding mode term allows to reject. The proposed controller guides the UAVs as a virtual structure corresponding to the straight line linking them, keeping both at the same altitude, preserving the distance between them, and rejecting the disturbance caused by the load. Keeping the formation's shape is the priority, and moving the formation is the secondary task. This approach modifies the control signal for the UAVs, ensuring a rigid shape for the formation, thus preserving the distance between the UAVs, keeping them at the same altitude, and providing additional energy to reject the load disturbance, hence improving the performance of the UAV-UAV-load system. Therefore, the whole system is dealt with as a virtual structure for which the null space-based controller, the formation controller, generates velocity references for the two UAVs, whereas a dynamic compensator embedding an adaptive sliding mode control law works as an individual controller for the drones, reducing the disturbance caused by the load.

Multipliers are essential for emerging technologies, as they are vital arithmetic circuits in many energy-efficient applications, such as digital signal processing and machine learning applications. Approximate multipliers (AxM) became an optimal option for applications in ASIC systems with error tolerance. This paper proposes to develop a run-time reconfigurable AxM with four approximation levels in a single circuit, evaluating accuracy and circuit metrics (e.g., circuit area, timing, and power consumption) based on the leading one-bit-based approximate (LoBA) multiplier. The results achieve a circuit area reduction of 52% less area and up to 27% less power consumption when compared with equivalent architecture based on LoBA state-of-art. Applying the proposed RLoBA to a normalized least mean square (NLMS) adaptive filter case study, we obtain 22.95% less power consumption using dynamic approximate level selection than the precise multiplier while maintaining the same accuracy level.

This paper presents a study and development on the thermal mapping of a Three-phase Induction Motor for harsh environments application. These machines’ exceptional performance and precise speed control make them essential equipment in multiple industrial processes, such as Artificial Lift, which integrates with a multistage centrifugal pump to elevate fluids from the reservoirs to the surface. Increased motor speeds for higher production requirements can result in temperature rise, damaging the stator winding. Employing the Raman Distributed Temperature Sensing System (RDTS), we generate a comprehensive heat distribution map of the motor. ANSYS Motor-CAD was applied for computational simulations to perform steady-state thermal analysis, giving an overview of heat transfer among internal components and thermal limits for the instrumented motor. This preliminary study presents a series of experimental tests to evaluate the advantages of fiber optic temperature sensing in harsh environments, emphasizing its significance in improving electrical machines’ performance and reliability. © 2024 SPIE.
