Inertia is an important property in power systems to counteract frequency deviations due to power fluctuations. However, the proliferation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the grid has decreased system inertia because they do not have or have a small rotating mass. This produces stability challenges as increasing the frequency deviation and rate of change of frequency, which can produce power electronics converter malfunctions, disconnection of large renewable generation, black-out, and load shedding. The Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM) has emerged as a promising solution for controlling converters to integrate RES, emulating the inertial response of conventional synchronous generators. Nevertheless, designing VSM parameters presents a significant challenge, especially in scenarios involving unbalanced grid conditions. This paper proposes an adaptive inertia control scheme using an Orthogonal Projection Algorithm (VSM-POA) to calculate the inertia of VSM to improve the stability of an unbalanced power system. This approach determines the inertia based on an identification algorithm that analyzes the frequency deviations in the presence of torque changes of the VSM to compute the inertia. To show the performance of the VSM-POA approach, time-domain simulations will be carried out in a four-wire system with an unbalanced current considering load variations. Moreover, the approach will be evaluated in a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) structure. Results indicate that the VSM - POA controller exhibits a lower Rate of Change of Frequency (ROCOF), reduced max-imum frequency deviation, and decreased frequency oscillations compared with VSM with constant inertia.

This work presents a comparison between multi- and single-mode fibers concerning the strain sensitivity based on the Rayleigh backscattering for distributed sensing applications. The experimental setup is composed of two 120 cm optical fibers (one MMF and one SMF). These fibers are attached to linear translation stages where the strain transmitted to the optical fiber is controlled by the stage displacement. The importance of proper human-machine interaction has become increasingly recognized in several sectors, such as industry, health, and education. Extended Reality (XR) technologies are currently being explored to generate innovative interaction techniques and to enhance immersion during HMI. However, solutions involving XR require high computational power, which may affect cost efficiency for large-scale deployment. State of the art (SOTA) neural text to speech (TTS) models can generate natural-sounding synthetic voices. These models are characterized by large memory footprints and substantial number of operations due to the long-standing focus on speech quality with cloud inference in mind. Neural TTS models are generally not designed to perform standalone speech syntheses on resource-constrained and no Internet access edge devices. In this work, an efficient neural TTS called EfficientSpeech that synthesizes speech on an ARM CPU in real-time is proposed. EfficientSpeech uses a shallow non-autoregressive pyramid-structure transformer forming a U-Network. EfficientSpeech has 266k parameters and consumes 90 MFLOPS only or about 1% of the size and amount of computation in modern compact models such as Mixer-TTS. EfficientSpeech achieves an average mel generation real-time factor of 104.3 on an RPi4. Human evaluation shows only a slight degradation in audio quality as compared to FastSpeech2.
