Vibration analysis is crucial for predictive maintenance of bearing systems, aiming to reduce costs and prevent failures. This paper investigates signal processing techniques such as FFTs and Hilbert Transforms for fault diagnosis, alongside decision tree models, particularly the J48 algorithm within the WEKA environment, for fault classification. The study emphasizes the integration of signal processing and machine learning for effective fault diagnosis and maintenance. Notably, a classification model with low computational cost has been chosen, facilitating implementation in embedded systems. This model also offers interpretability of outputs, as it is based on decision trees of frequency components obtained through preprocessing. © 2024 IEEE.

This work presents an optimized exponential function VLSI hardware design by Taylor series expansion. The proposed architecture implements the exponential by approximating the logic design of a 4th-order Taylor series and explores efficient CMOS arithmetic operation strategies. It implements a shift-based divider and explores an efficient 4-2 adder compressor in the adder tree. The proposal with a -7 to 11 input values range shows an output error of around 2% of MRED with a reduced energy consumption of 3.63 pJ/operation for 32-bit output. For a 64-bit output, the energy per operation of the VLSI exponential unit is 14.97pJ/op, being able to process a more comprehensive input range (i.e., -14 to 22) for a negligible mean output error of around 1.7% of MRED. © 2023 IEEE.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are intricate mathematical models, drawing inspiration from the biological nervous system, and offering intelligence alongside nonparametric capabilities. The efficacy of ANNs heavily relies on their learning process. Heuristic search algorithms have been proposed in literature as reliable options for optimizing neural networks utilizing the Perceptron architecture. This paper presents an suboptimal neural network Perceptron training method employing the Whale Optimization Algorithm for the application of farming watering mobile robots. To achieve this, a fitness function based on system responses such as overshoot, settling Time, and steady-state Error was developed. The sub-optimal Perceptron controller was then implemented using MATLAB, CoppeliaSim software and the EVA robot, resulting in a 66.17% overshoot, a 4.7% steady-state error, and a settling time of 3.05 seconds. Moreover, the sub-optimal Perceptron controller was mapped onto a System on Chip FPGA AMD-Xilinx Zynq 7020, resulting in a hardware resources consumption of 1,870 (3.52%) Lookup table, 2 (0.9%) Digital Signal Processing blocks, 1,019 (0.96%) Flip-Flops and a power consumtion of 0.005 W. Finally, Hardware-in-The-Loop validation was performed using CoppeliaSim, Python, Universal Direct Memory Access, and the EVA robot. The results showed an overshoot of 94.83%, a settling time of 2 seconds, and a steady-state error of 4.5%. © 2024 IEEE.

We have developed an experimental apparatus and confirmed that vibration can be suppressed by applying a caster angle to a caster during high-speed traveling. Public transportation services are declining, especially in highly mountainous areas, causing a reduction in the range of activities and the quality of life. Therefore, micro-mobility is attracting attention. Micro-mobility refers to vehicles that are small and can seat about two people. By applying active-casters to these vehicles, it is expected to improve the range of activities by enabling omnidirectional movement and intuitive operation on narrow roads. The active-caster is effective in terms of durability and vibration reduction because it can move in all directions using normal tires. However, there is concern that the steering axis may oscillate from side to side at short intervals when moving at high speeds with normal tires. Therefore, in this study, we developed an experimental apparatus to verify traveling of the active-caster at high-speed. However, in this case, traveling verification was conducted on a passive caster as a preliminary experiment. As a result, vibration of the steering axis of the caster was confirmed, and it was also confirmed that the caster angle suppressed oscillate at high speed. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Recent advances in distribution networks, driven by the integration of renewable energy sources, have spurred the emergence of microgrids, elevating concerns regarded reliability and stability. In this context, precise monitoring of events, particularly those elusive to detection like high-impedance faults (HIFs), becomes imperative. The development of phasor measurement units (PMUs) with their harmonic synchronized measurements has enhanced the monitoring task and fostering the application of synchrophasors even on microgrids. This work introduces a novel method for event classification in microgrids, utilizing combined low-rate PMU data and harmonic synchrophasor time series. Central to our approach is the usage of a state-of-the-art transformer neural network, based on the attention mechanism, to effectively discern HIFs from other faulty and non-fault events. Notably, this methodology accounts for prevalent PMU data quality issues, including noise, missing data, and synchronism errors. Results from real-world HIF data demonstrate a robust performance, with an accuracy rate of approximately 98% in event classification. This harmonic synchrophasor-based strategy showcases promise as an original approach for handling commercial PMU data, offering sufficient robustness for deployment in real-world applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Addition units are present across many computational kernels inherent in various error-tolerant applications, including machine learning, signal, image, and video processing. Notably, adder compressors are the target when high speed and low power are the main design concerns. This work introduces energy-efficient structures of 3-2 approximate adder compressors (Ax3-2) and three distinct versions of 4-2 approximate adder compressors (Ax4-2). We compared our proposed Ax3-2 and Ax4-2 compressors with state-of-the-art energy-efficient approximate adder compressors (AxACs). Both Ax3-2 and Ax4-2 models passed through rigorous tests as standalone units. Furthermore, we integrated the Ax4-2 models into an essential application kernel appearing in video coding, i.e., the Sum Squared Differences (SSD) video accelerator. We introduce Ax3-2 and Ax4-2 that yield a new Pareto front concerning both energy-quality and area-quality trade-offs, thereby demonstrating a marked improvement over the prevailing state-of-the-art energy-efficient AxACs. © 2023 IEEE.

Neurological disorders affect gait and posture, leading to significant difficulties in daily life. Traditional gait assessment lacks objective and quantifiable data, hindering comprehensive evaluation. To address these limitations, interactive and objective systems, such as smart walkers and specialized treadmills, have been developed utilizing advanced technologies to gather detailed gait data. This study focuses on evaluating two control strategies (A controller based on adaptive estimation of gait parameters and a PI controller-based systems) to automate a conventional treadmill, utilizing LRF sensors and the user's walking speed for personalized system control. The results demonstrate high adaptability of the control models to gait variations, surpassing reported walking speeds in the literature using these algorithms. These findings are relevant for enhancing user interaction and experience in rehabilitation applications and serious games, which can enable improvements in rehabilitation and human-machine interaction. Our results show that the strategy employing adaptive filters exhibits superior responsiveness, enabling adaptation to different treadmill speeds with greater ease. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper proposes a solution for markerless gait analysis based on point cloud data, which are three-dimensional data obtained by sensors such as LiDAR, that can capture body movements in real-time and in various environments. Gait analysis aims to evaluate the differences in symmetry between the left and right sides of the body, which can indicate diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The point cloud is a sparse matrix with N points in 3D space and the intensity of reflected light, which does not have an ordering between the points and the minimum distance between them is responsible for the density of the cloud. In the proposed method the point cloud is transformed into voxels, which are cubic units that facilitate data processing, and each set of points in the voxel is used for person detection. The points of the person are used to segment the body parts, and each part is used to estimate the joint position. The joint position is used to construct a rigid body model, where a person is represented by their segments. The rotations and translations of the segment over time are used to build the gait analysis graph. By comparing the rotation of each segment over time, it is possible to calculate the difference between the left and right sides and detect at what moment of the movement the difference is large enough to indicate the onset of pathology. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

This article explores the integration of Self-Directed Learning (SDL), Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) and the Second Brain (SB) concept within the Knowledge Society scenario. Highlighting SDL as a key contemporary competence, we emphasize the role of PKM in enhancing work efficiency and career development, crucial in an era marked by vast data influx. The SB concept is presented as a digital tool for effective information and knowledge organization, serving as a knowledge base along the CODE workflow and PARA system, also addressing challenges posed by the information age. The synergy between SB, PKM and SDL is examined as a holistic approach for optimizing knowledge management, fostering personal development and enhancing learning processes. We also discuss the implications for Organizational Knowledge Management (OKM) and active learning in organizational settings, aiming to cultivate a culture of adaptability and lifelong learning.
